MicroStrategy Analytics

It is appropriate when wishing to show big data to a group that needs to make informed decisions quickly, and that does not have a technical background and cannot get bogged down in percentages and technicalities. For those that want it, however, Microstrategy provides gridded reports that make detailed examination of data easy. Both are simple to create

SAP BusinessObjects Business Intelligence (BI) Platform

If your company is mainly an SAP shop and all your data is consolidated, SAP BusinessObjects BI Platform is a necessary tool and will elevate your business strategy with great analysis and dashboard for leadership to track, monitor and decide. However, for large organizations like us, it took us several years to consolidate different tools and applications into SAP first which is a huge undertaking at the cost of several tens of millions of dollars and over 4yrs before we can begin to realize the benefits of SAP BusinessObjects BI Platform.

Pros

  • Great for reporting that has stabilized (not changing much over time)
  • Drill-down/through is great for facilitating an interactive discussion with business leaders
  • Report-sharing helps keep the data on the back-end, reducing the emailing of large Excel files
Eli Chan profile photo
  • Easily allows end-users to build their own customized data queries and reports.
  • Reports can be exported to excel or pdf with one click in order to be shared with other stakeholders.
  • Once built, reports can also be scheduled to run at specific intervals (daily, weekly, etc) and automatically e-mailed to stakeholders, saving time.

Cons

  • Perhaps it was the nature of the size of the company I previously worked for, but the amount of time it took for changes and upgrades to be implemented was a bit frustrating at times.
  • It would be incredibly helpful if users had the ability to make changes to metrics and attributes without having to rely to heavily on MicroStrategy developers, it would make the product a great deal more useful.
  • Being able to distribute rich MicroStrategy reports without sending enormous emails was problematic at times. If there was a way to let data rich reports being distributed via email live in a web environment would be a big plus for the platform.
  • Being unable to view reports on smartphones was a bit of a pain at times as well, particularly when you need to send reports to colleagues working off-site without a laptop or desktop computer available.

  • Support. Like many large organizations SAP relies heavly on the user commuity and documents to support users. If you are a midsized company your best solution is a regional consulting partner.
  • License agreements. You really need a good negotiation team to get the value for the money. Stay away from the named user agreements.

We are still debating the SAP BO license renewal. We want to make sure (by comparing it to other tools) that BO has kept up with its competition with features and general product development direction. One major point for the established BO customers (like us) is Desktop Intelligence (Deski) reports support. Back when the product was purchased this was the only reporting tool offered by BO, so great majority of reports have been created in Deski. Now, new BO release 4.1 officially does not support it, but SAP recently made some concessions to at lease extend its life and make it easier to convert them to Webi

It is difficult to learn, but once you figure it out through training, it becomes simpler and the reasons for it's complexity becomes apparent.

I've never had an issue with MicroStrategy not being available due to MicroStrategy application malfunction. It is very robust and only failures I've seen were due to user error or the platform the machine running the service failed some how.

Performance

MicroStrategy Analytics10.0
Based on 1 answer
Being able to customize the performance based on the business need is extremely powerful. Proper configuration and understanding of the usage pattern is key, if the technical ability of the architect is not at top level, then the product will not be configured correctly which will lead to poor performance.

Like any BI stack, how well it performs is dependent on many factors including what resources you provide the system itself and how well the source data is structured. If you do it right as at least a 3 tiered installation separating the processing components from the front end and keeping the database separate, along with a dimensional data warehousehouse as your source, it is a star performer.

Support

If the staff does not know they answer they either find it out at some point, or put in a feature request. I have never been left hanging or been given an answer that is unsatisfactory to the solution. Even if there was no current solution, I was still told the logical reason and why.

Very difficult website to use that is not very intuitive. It's hard to reach a good support person that can actually help with the issue. We usually end up solving the issue ourselves.

Online Training

The MicroStrategy training is incredible, they have great online teachers. I was fortunate to be learning MicroStrategy while also implementing a project from scratch. This helped to solidify a lot of the concepts and be able to ask questions about real world problems in addition to class room exercises.

Implementation

MicroStrategy Analytics8.0
Based on 3 answers
Implementation is not easy, but also not difficult. With enough training on how to create a schema, and with the proper data warehouse schema the implementation can be very quick. If there are a lot of unknowns in the beginning phase of modeling, that can greatly extend the overall time taken for a fully implemented project.

Breadth of Deployment

Our customers are mainly internal to the business having a user base in the hundreds. The types of users who are active with MicroStrategy range from business analysts to software developers.

Business Objects can be used in any department in any function (supply chain, financials, human resources) at a company that needs to analyze operational data in order to make decisions and provide strategic guidance to the business as a whole.

Alternatives Considered

Microstrategy is already used in the organization and it clearly is used by many leading industries. Tableau and Salesforce are comparatively new to this.

I use SIMSmart for my spending reports, spending channel analysis, Procure to Pay metrics analysis. I believe that SIMS is more user-friendly than SAP Business Objects BI Platform. Also, with SIMS, I can edit the columns of information that I want to see and incorporate in my report. I am a SIMS Power User and I find SIMS more user-friendly.

Sharing is done via a link. I think that Microstrategy should provide a more social platform for sharing; similar to FB or LinkedIN.

As mentioned in response to one of the earlier points, BusinessObjects can be linked to a data warehouse in a fairly easy manner and then queries can be written in BusinessObjects to get the details from the data warehouse.

Scalability

MicroStrategy Analytics10.0
Based on 1 answer
This software is extremely scaleable, one can add more core servers which performs as a load balancing. The configurations available to manage usage patterns and daily activity are as high a caliber as any other enterprise level software. This product can be installed on both a windows and unix platform allow for integration on a budget.

Return on Investment

  • Quick turnaround of proficiency. (Quick to learn basics)
  • Able to show reports and results clearly.
  • Ability to use MicroStrategy for practice and real business practice.
No photo available
  • By generating and distributing reports in a timely manner, we were able to save millions of dollars for the company which otherwise would not have been visible.
  • Almost realtime dashboard, saved the company a huge amount by showing the outages and kept the company from buying a tool to do just that.
  • It showed the customers who were not paying the bills and were missing in the system due to some loophole. This was visible by doing reporting on the theft usage of electricity.
