Moz

Moz is fantastic for keyword-centric, rankings-focused clients. It also offers fun extras that clients love such as SERP features, and a great competitor-comparison angle for specific keywords. For clients who want to see how keywords fluctuate in rankings over time, Moz is an excellent tool to make this tracking as effortless as possible

Parse.ly

I think it's a really great tool for traffic data. It's not too overwhelming on the homepage (all I really want to know is top stories of the day and top posts in the last few minutes) and if I want to go more in-depth with where traffic is coming from, I know I can just click on the story for additional data. Parse.ly is truly well suited for writing in the entertainment industry. Every writer wants to know if people are reading their stories, and it does just that. At this time I can't think of a scenario where's it's less appropriate to use.

Pros

Moz

  • Keyword Explorer has excellent filtering options and a great recommendation engine around related terms.
  • The On-Page Grader is an excellent gut check when publishing new service pages and blog posts.
  • Domain Authority has always served as an easily digestible number to assess how we're doing in our optimization efforts, as well as assessing competitors or outreach targets.

Parse.ly

  • The real-time metrics are incredibly useful.
  • I love how detailed the information can get. I can find out a breakdown of the origins of the traffic, so I know which came from a push notification, from FB or Twitter, from the site itself, from a newsletter, etc. And I can tell if people are visiting my sites via desktop or mobile, time spent on site, where they went on the site after the initial article, etc. I also can see how stories perform by reporter, source, keyword, etc.
  • They have excellent customer service. Any support ticket I file receives prompt attention. Other organizations can be far less responsive, so it's always nice to know in the rare instance I experience an issue with Parse.ly I will get help quickly.

Cons

Moz

  • Link building is not a core strength for MOZ. But I think they've recognized this and found a company (STAT) to join up with to strengthen that area.
  • I think they've missed how useful Rank Tracker is to a lot of their users. I would like to see them spend some time on the UX of this feature to improve it because the base concept is worthwhile. I started looking into alternate solutions when I heard it was going away--solutions that would have taken my budget away from MOZ. It was a relief to see them roll back their decision to remove its functionality.
  • I would like to see more capability to be able to track ranking for keyterms for desktop and mobile as separate metrics. I know there is a difference, but I have no definitive insights other than my manual tracking, which for local is not very accurate when I'm trying to promote a site in Portland and am based in the Midwest.

Parse.ly

  • The URLs that list where some traffic came from (i.e. Twitter) are sometimes hard to read.
  • It would be great to see more detail of traffic sources. For example, if a spike of views come from Twitter it would be great to see if it is a specific tweet or account the bulk of views are coming from.

We've been paying monthly for Moz for at least four years. We rely heavily on it for our daily work, and would need to re-engineer many of our processes if we were to cancel our subscription. I suspect we'll continue to use Moz as long as we are in business (assuming they maintain their quality).

I have not had a ton of interaction with the support team. Mostly asking questions where I cannot find the answer or where the data did not quite make sense. I always use their easy to access chat feature to talk to support. They are very responsive and very well informed and can usually solve my issue with just one chat session.

Getting support from Parsely is so easy. They are super responsive and really go out of their way to make sure they get you to a solution you're happy with. In the rare event that what you need is impossible, they actually record your feedback and actually get it to the people who could act on it. I've even had them get back to me later to get more information about a feature I requested.

Alternatives Considered

I've recently noticed we're using SEM Rush a whole lot more nowadays for rank tracking. In fact, it's the first time we've gone to the highest package across multiple client accounts due to the ability to plot rankings amongst competitors in a cool visual way, the ability to categorize keywords by tags, and the nice UI improvements they have made.

One of the things users first say when they start with Parse.ly is how easy it is to navigate through a lot of data thanks to the design. Parse.ly also has several data points and metrics that their competitors do not track. The automated reporting also makes it much easier to review metrics on your own time, instead of having to stare at the dashboard all day.

Return on Investment

Moz

  • I can't answer that question accurately as I don't have access to the budgetary metrics of our business.
  • I can say it's certainly helped us glean insight into HOW to gain a positive ROI, but can't attest to the true figures because I simply don't know.
Andrew Silverstein | TrustRadius Reviewer

Parse.ly

  • The return on investment is very, very good, as we've been using it for years now with no sign of stopping or switching to a different platform. I have no hard numbers available, as that would be something my managers would be able to provide.
  • I do think that more accurate numbers from previous years would be of better use.
