.NET

Microsoft .Net framework works on Windows operating system, .Net Core runs on any platform as does Java so no real differences in this area. Microsoft .Net supports - C#, VB.Net, C++, PHP, Ruby, Python, and more.Interoperability between different languages is nicely done. Microsoft Visual Studio is the default IDE, provides everything for a developer to develop, debug, build, and deploy any type of application targeted. When writing a Web API (restful services), .Net is far easier--and even cross-platform when using the ASP .Net Core libraries.

Nintex Process Platform

Running complex or multi-step workflows is really where Nintex shines, especially if you don't have developer resources on staff. With the WYSIWYG like workflow canvas, you can easily see the logic and build the necessary steps using out-of-the-box controls included in the product. Branching logic or conditional steps are easily supported and the concept of state machines is supported as well.

Pros

.NET

  • The most helpful aspect of .NET is the large user community. I have on numerous occasions put out a question about a problem I was having and was helped by at least one .NET developer from the community.
  • With .NET Core becoming more mature, it has helped us build our applications to be able to run on any platform without doing too much extra work. Our internal customers have not asked for this but we anticipate that they will and .NET Core allows us to be ready for that.
  • As our applications develop over time and business needs change, .NET has proven that it remains stable for backwards compatibility.

Nintex Process Platform

  • Nintex workflows provide a robust interface that's not only intuitive but easy to learn with little to no coding experience.
  • Nintex forms are particularly powerful and provide a great alternative to InfoPath forms which is being deprecated.
  • Upgrading between versions of Nintex is easy to do with their nwadmin tool and robust documentation provided on their support portal.
  • The user adoption rate of their products is extremely high and doesn't require a selling point or an explanation of benefits in converting their existing workflows and forms.

Cons

.NET

  • Limited object-relational (OR) support as it comes only with Entity Framework
  • Does not come with multi platform support from Microsoft, and is not available right after installing Visual Studio
  • The managed code can be slower than native code
  • Involves a vendor lock-in, and future development is solely dependent on Microsoft
  • Migrating applications to .NET can be expensive as involves whole lot of custom development

Nintex Process Platform

  • Forms: Some functionality about validation, or buttons need to be implemented using JAVASCRIPT. It would be welcomed to include more functions in this area.
  • Forms: The parent-child relationship is another area to improve. Repeating sections don't have the required performance to make a strong relationship between two or more tables (Sharepoint lists).
  • Workflow: Using an on-premise environment, there is not a good system to manage workflows: versions, insights, purge, etc.

Unfortunately, we will not be using Nintex going forward because the experience in on-prem Nintex and SharePoint 2016 is not replicable in Office 365 / SharePoint online. Also, the licensing model is different and would not be cost-effective to scale in the new environment with a lower-functioning version of Nintex (Nintex online is not as robust and user-friendly as the on-prem version). Our parent company assesses capability, licensing models, cost, and security to weigh in on whether a tool can exist in our portfolio. While on-prem Nintex was a great solution for our business when connected to SharePoint 2016, the online version that connects to SharePoint online is feature-weak, in development, and does not march capability forward for us in a meaningful way. The parent operating company has opted to go with Microsoft Flow instead.

.NET frameworks are fantastic overall. There are no limitations to what you can accomplish with it. The most important part is that you'll have access to developer community support and that .NET is always being improved every month. Be it in web applications, back-end servers, or integrations, .NET enables developers to do it all.

Nintex Workflow does exactly what it is advertised to do: make workflow development fast and easy. It doesn't provide very much new functionality, but it isn't really supposed to.When I am working with a client on a SharePoint project, I am always happy if I hear that they use Nintex Workflow, as it makes workflows much easier.

I give this a 9 because Nintex overall has been exemplary, except for responsive design forms seem to be a little slow when getting complex.

Minimal support is required from the product team, as Microsoft .NET has a great community platform where users can post their problems and also get the solutions to those problems. It is very rare that a solution can not be found. That is when it becomes necessary to get in touch with the Support Team and, in those cases, the solution is provided.

I used the Nintex training software, it was easy to watch and follow along. It didn't go too fast and was descriptive enough to understand what the steps needed were in order to produce efficient workflows and user friendly forms.

Alternatives Considered

.NET

.Net platform is our primary option for developing newer solutions because of a lot of reasons, but in the past years, we have received a few requests in which we had to use Java SE. We had no big problem to use Java. Still, the productivity difference and the offer of documentation and skilled employes was the key decision to maintain our focus using .Net.

Nintex WorkFlows seems to be a lot more user friendly, contrast to using SharePoint Designer. I had to spend a lot of time learning SPD and even more time troubleshooting SPD WorkFlows and InfoPath Forms. Though Microsoft offers lots of information on knowledge base (kbs) and "Tech Net" articles that can be an eye sore to read, Nintex has a lot of easy to understand online courses that empower administrators how each action works, WorkFlow terminology and mitigating errors. I appreciate the Nintex online community that also zeros in on troubleshooting when admins are stuck.

This product works well as you scale business processes but there is a point where things become too complex. Administratively it scales fine, number of users is no problem, and since Nintex relies on the build in SharePoint workflow manager, it falls under the same scalability perimeters. Business Process complexity is the limiter for scalability within Nintex.

Return on Investment

.NET

  • I have not been required to pay for using .NET, so it is not possible to calculate a return on investment.
  • The time saved by creating custom applications to help me with my various daily tasks has been far greater than the time spent creating the applications.

Nintex Process Platform

  • Nintex has an ROI report that analysis all workflows in your environment and time spent on developing the workflows . We have paid off our investment in the first 12 months according to this report.
  • Once you have implemented it, you should probably have more than one person or have plans in place to get more people because the requests will start streaming in.
