.NET

I highly recommend .Net as a platform for custom development. We can leverage several UI elements and also integrate with third party controls like Telerik, Infragistics etc. Provides platforms, tools, and a programming environment for addressing the design and overall management of distributed and multi-tiered applications. It offers immeasurable benefits for various issues like memory management, security, and exceptional handling, a developer may face. .NET is not suited in case of multi-platform requirement. There isn't support available from MS and isn't available straight after installing Visual Studio. If that is a criteria for your business case then consider a different platform. Also .NET is very easy to reverse engineer. If you do not obfuscate your code, you may as well publish the source code. The footprint of your application can be huge if it requires a version of .NET, which is not already on the computer and therefore has to be installed first.

SAP HANA

HANA has incredible query processing speeds. When compared with Sybase ASE for large dataset queries, we saw 10,000 times performance improvement. And for the individual point queries, we found that it was on par with Sybase ASE and that is because all of the response time is the round trip latency from the client initiating the query to the database and back. But for those large set processing requests that take a long time on Sybase, they ran 10,000 times faster on HANA. HANA is expensive so it should be used where in-memory transaction speeds are required and there are large volumes of data to be processed.

Pros

.NET

  • .NET allows the user to quickly create applications to solve problems.
  • .NET is extremely flexible, allowing the programmer to interact with nearly every aspect of the computer.
  • There are a number of languages that can be used to program in .NET.

SAP HANA

  • HANA has allowed us to convert our BW reports and provide users with real time report data. Prior to moving to HANA, the reporting was based on prior day activities.
  • Queries involving large amount of financial data are able to be run much quicker with HANA than prior to implementation.

Cons

.NET

  • You need to buy everything from Microsoft. The biggest con is that it is not free like Java. Migrating applications to .NET can be expensive.
  • Does not come with multi-platform support from Microsoft, and is not available right after installing Visual Studio.
  • Very much Windows OS dependent.

  • Personally I believe the UI could be much more compact and I see improvement areas.
  • Mobile application and desktop are very different.
  • Sometimes you need type-in help on mouse hover for faster input and selection.
  • Now HANA is going cloud where data and security becomes a concern for larger companies. We want to see a benchmark company in manufacturing domain with such a large retail presence. I see there are areas for improvement in that.

At this moment we are not focusing on SAP, however would love to in the future. This is primarily because of our limited ability to generate more revenue to fund for SAP partnerships and products. Our initial tryst with SAP Partneredge open ecosystem didn't go as planned and we have shelved that for now. Hope we can revive in the future

Microsoft .NET is very easy to get started with. All you need to do is download the free Microsoft Visual Studio and you can be off and running developing in Microsoft .NET. Deployment is very easy as all the libraries you will need will come pre-installed in Windows and can be easily downloaded for other operating systems.

As Microsoft Gold Partners, we do have access to a lot of additional information and support from Microsoft. Still, the availability of "open and free" documentation, community, and enthusiasts of the platform is vast. Added to that, the quality of resources provided for all the Microsoft ecosystem is very impressive.

Overall, support is good. The wait times are low, and you get a quick response. The available agents have good knowledge about the problems at hand. If the issue is more complex, they connect you with the appropriate source to build the solution around the issue. Support team is well organized, they take a step-by-step approach to understand the issue at hand and build a solution around it. Overall, my organization is highly satisfied with the support.

Alternatives Considered

.NET

We have worked with Java in the past but their library, functions, features out the box are not as helpful as those provided by .NET. Additionally, these features can be harder to implement depending on your business and it's harder to find these skills/resources from the development pool.

We changed PECTRA for SAP, since we were having many problems with the loss of information in the database and unexpected catalog changes. In addition to that, it was very cumbersome to perform data analysis. We had many problems with a lack of materials or that the necessary did not enter because of it.

Return on Investment

.NET

  • Saved us time from having to evaluate many different Java libraries which did not integrate well or had questionable support lifetimes.
  • Saved us from having to track down CLASSPATH issues.
  • Saved us from servers crashing due to lack of PermGen space.

SAP HANA

  • Since implementing HANA we have been able to save several million dollars a year in operating room supplies ($9 million last fiscal year).
  • It has allowed us to improve our processes to save $1 million dollars in our Laboratory Services
  • We have used it as part of our month end close to save over 20 hours every month of manual reporting.
