Netsuite for Nonprofits

For small-medium sized non-profits I think NetSuite for Nonprofits is a great solution! For a larger organization, with multiple locations, the Household and Individual records start taking up a lot of room, so I could see a subsidiary account being necessary for easier system navigation

Salesforce for Nonprofits

I think Salesforce is great any time you want to keep track of a large number of people and how they connect to your organization. This may not be great if you always work with the same 100 people and they are easy to keep a handle on or if you just don't have time to learn a fairly complex database. In that case, you may find a simpler system more worthwhile.

Salesforce for Nonprofits

  • Salesforce makes it simple to enter and track client data across time.
  • Salesforce for Nonprofits allows organizations to enter and track donation information with customizable options that make it easy to reconcile with internal financial data.
  • Salesforce for Nonprofits provides free resources to connect with other nonprofit/organizational professionals and learn from them; they also provide learning resources on their Trailblazer platform.

Cons

Netsuite for Nonprofits

  • The last department in our organization that we haven't been able to implement into NetSuite is out Volunteer department. The system we currently use for Volunteers to login and track their hours allows them to have a free user license. So far, we have not been able to find a way for NetSuite to do these things for us. We would love for a future portal to be created for our 200+ Volunteers to login and have accessibility to their hours without having to pay for them to all have licenses.
  • For reporting - we would like to be able to join to more than one level above or below the record the search/report is built on. It's been frustrating at times that we cannot pull in data off another custom record into a search or report.
  • We have found the Outlook-NetSuite integration has been less than desirable for us. Although emails do integrate, calendar events do not. Currently, many of our employees have to track appointments with Customers in both their Outlook and NetSuite calendars.

Salesforce for Nonprofits

  • We occasionally struggle with marketing cloud. It is a very robust tool and does not always seem to work well for our needs. We are working to improve it but it is proving to be a challenging tool.
  • Chatter has worked very well for our organization as it provides a history of all that has happened in the system. We attempted to consolidate all communications in one platform (chatter) but employees are not as comfortable using the solution for everyday communications as it part of our system of record. It does work for social communication but our staff is not comfortable using it.
  • Some of the integrations that we try and do are difficult and fragile at times. There has been improvement but integrations are always a concern.

I think Salesforce has so much functionality that it makes it difficult in terms of overall usability. Once you can figure it out, it's a 10/10, it's just getting there. If you're willing to do the work to figure it out then you're golden. For what it's worth, I don't know if you're going to find something with this level of functionality that's easier to figure out

Salesforce has a lot of options for support, including self-service training to go out and learn on your own. Additionally, there's an excellent community around the product to try and help out. There is a lot Salesforce can do, so having these resources is absolutely necessary when you are trying to even figure out language around your problem. There are also many consulting firms that specialize in Salesforce.

Alternatives Considered

Netsuite for Nonprofits

We were led to believe NetSuite was the best of both worlds, and would seamlessly combine a great CRM with a good accounting program. We have fewer problems on the accounting side, but the donor (customer) relations management database is very disappointing.

Salesforce for Nonprofits

Salesforce for Nonprofits is much more flexible than other tools I've used in the past. You aren't limited to staying with one company's suite of products - you have the ability to build out your database / fundraising solution using best in class applications. It also has a different pricing model - it's all based on users and storage, opposed to a blanket platform fee.

Return on Investment

Netsuite for Nonprofits

  • We have been able to produce accurate and powerful data that's resulted in new grants being awarded.
  • We are able to see Customer and Donor involvement in one system now, resulting in greater understanding of depth of relationships across the organization.
  • We cut annual and monthly costs by implementing NetSuite and rolling our Donor relations CRM, client relations CRM, Accounting, and Expense reporting into one system.

Salesforce for Nonprofits

  • We applied to the foundation and got free licenses for Salesforce so it was not a risky upfront financial investment for us. It has been a very helpful and useful CRM and donor management system for us.
  • Learning Salesforce is very challenging and has created a lot of frustration amongst our staff. There are not a lot of local resources in our more rural community to get assistance or training on Salesforce.
  • The HUB/community of users on Salesforce is very helpful and supportive. Whenever I pose a question I always get responses. Unfortunately, most of those people are much more advanced than I am so often, I don't understand their answers to my questions.
