If you need to gauge whether your site is up or down, then Neustar will give you exactly what you are looking for. However, if you need more granularity for specific application or sub-systems and their functionality, this product will need to be subsidized with other applications that provide more data or information on how individual components or systems are working.

I've found Pingdom to be the best solution for relatively simple uptime checks when you need a reliable way to run those checks and alert on failures. I haven't used their transaction monitoring or Real User Monitoring features but it may be great at those too.

- It allows access to a history of checks, how much time they took, and if any errors were detected.
- It can alert several people, or many in a group, for information related to the application availability.
- When drilling down into the check, the logs can pinpoint the exact time and code events and how long each step took to respond.

- We have experienced false positives of a system outage that was not accurate.
- It's not a true measure of system performance or uptime, but simply judges up or down from a holistic view.

- there should be some threshold value for when an application is not reachable, it should alert after 30 seconds and keep sending hello packets for those 30 seconds and if still there is no response, then it should send the alert.

Recently added features have made Pingdom less intuitive for our requirements. While Pingdom has a broad offering and remains a good value, it is becoming more than we need. Our customer base is becoming more and more global and Pingdom still lacks Asia-Pacific monitoring, which we will need within a year.

Pingdom is easy to use, very intuitive and has a very short learning curve. From the onset, we've been able to jump in and leverage the tool to accomplish our goals for page speed performance and discover the insights we need to make improvements. Its a well-designed tool and makes for a good user experience.

Customer service from Solarwinds has always been stellar. We've never gone unnoticed, even though we're currently within their tail segment. They're a great partner to us and indeed an important one. When we've had to submit a ticket, we've always received a response within 24 hours. I'd highly recommend SolarWinds to any organization with a server network

To be honest, I am not certain why this product was initially chosen over other products. It was being used when I started working at a new job. I was trained on its use and focused on tracking issues when an alert was given. There are many products that can be used for monitoring site uptime. Neustar definitely has its uses for monitoring if a site is up or down, but its lack of granularity can turn some away.

Some of the products mentioned here are much more "holistic solutions" for monitoring, analyzing, logging, alerting, etc., but for the use case, we use SolarWinds Pingdom. I think that SolorWinds Pingdom is much simpler and friendlier for configuring and maintaining. We selected SolarWinds Pingdom for this case due to our previous acquaintance which left a good impression on us.

- Due to the limitations with the applications ability to show system functionality and uptime we have begun using other methods for determining system uptime for our customers.
- The interface can be a bit tricky to understand during first use. There is somewhat of a learning curve.
