The Okta Identity Cloud

Okta is great for organizations that need a unified, single sign-on application for various websites and internal applications. Also, if you need 2FA, Okta Workforce does it very well. I couldn't see a scenario where Okta wouldn't be appropriate, as it integrates directly into your current authentication solution, whether that be Active Directory, LDAP or some other form. It also could be the sole provider of authentication if needed.

Gigya is a good product overall. It's great for going from "non-social" to 'highly-social" very rapidly. But as needs become more complex over time, the value starts to decrease a bit.

Pros

The Okta Identity Cloud

  • The adaptive MFA is really flexible to each organization's needs. Being able to adjust MFA requirements based on location and application helps protect the data that needs to be protected, but allows for ease of use for other applications that don’t require as stringent protections.
  • Multiple levels of administrative rights allow organizations to distribute responsibilities to different teams and allowing them to assist in the administration. Examples are an IT Help Desk Team and an Application Security Team.
  • Set up is actually quite simple. Some applications do require a little more assistance, but for the most part, its applications are easy to integrate.

  • Gigya provide a range of flexible APIs which support the development of bespoke engagement tools. They also provide out of the box engagement tools like comments and reactions.
  • Gigya's identity query tool makes it straightforward for users to query the user database using straightforward SQL queries.
  • Gigya's cloud storage is a safe and secure alternative to self-hosted databases.

  • Okta offers a few different pricing tiers but for what I'm using it for the price could be better. Since they offer different pricing tiers it's just a matter of matching up what you need the product to do and what you're willing to pay for.

  • Nothing obvious. Some editors and traffickers want a more detailed analytics package. Gigya reports are pretty basic. There is a strong need for more advanced analytics and automated reports.
  • We have talked to Gigya about it, and they are working on it.

They've shown that they're committed to maintaining a great core product while expanding to be more all-encompassing. They've released the first version of Okta Mobility Management, which is a completely different approach to a traditional MDM-type solution. While we don't use it yet, we're looking forward to how they develop it. It's a good example of a company that's still really growing, but doing it well.

Admin panel is very clean and effective and manageable. Can't say enough good things about the UI. It's easy to use and enables to configure embeddable widgets by simply copying and pasting Java Script examples.

There are some latency issues. The 24 hour caching problem mentioned earlier is a problem. Sometimes the Gigya system makes two calls instead of a single call if we go directly to the social platform. For this reason, it's sometimes more efficient to go direct rather than use Gigya.

Fantastic support team. Very proactive. Not only do they answer questions in a timely manner, but they proactively show us whats coming in next releases. I can also share what I would like to see. They are very honest about what they can do, and what is not likely to be on the roadmap.
I never get any push-back from them about the hours of support. They are always willing to help.
They are also great about suggesting best practices that we might not have thought about. In other words, "Have you thought about doing it this way...".

Okta and Ping are similar but the future has been laid out for us by Okta and we believe that that is the correct path for our company and IT team to follow. We try to make sure that we are making progress that we can apply to everything we do and not limit ourselves. We feel that Okta gives us the best chance to do this

The three names that we were given to evaluate against Gigya by our tiger team were Bitium, OneLogin, and Janrain. The last one was just too new to the game, so after a brief review, we passed. We moderately considered Bitium, but OneLogin seemed to win against them more than they lost. In the end, it came down to Gigya versus OneLogin, and we decided to go with Gigya because of the overwhelming reviews of the outstanding customer service.
