Basic modeling is very quick and easy. I particularly like the top-down modeling approach and Onshape is architected with that in mind. Drawings are now much more fully featured and perform well, so no real issues there. I really like that we can share the environment within and outside the organization which allows for a high level of transparency with the project stake holders. We don't use the release cycle aspect of Onshape since the rest of our organization is based on files and using PDM for controlling and distributing them. We have discussed how we might use Onshape for that whole workflow, but until it is the primary CAD tool, will not likely pursue that for now.

Rhino 3D

One of the main highlights of Rhino is the built-in visual programming system "Grasshopper". It is widely used for parametric architectural design, by a variety of world-class architectural offices. It is also very popular within architectural schools and universities. Its usefulness has increased a lot by having add-ins, plug-ins, scripts, and integrations with Revit and ARCHICAD for BIM workflows.

Pros

Onshape

  • Cloud-connected - we never have to worry about updating our design computers or upgrade the software as the upgrades happen automatically every few weeks. We are always on the latest version and get access to the newest features.
  • Analytics, we are able to see how we are using the tool, how long projects are really taking to complete and how much time we are spending in the system.
  • Extensible, we are able to use FeatureScript and write functions for our own features. We have used this to automate repetitive tasks so that we save time on designing features that we use over and over.

Rhino 3D

  • Parametric Modeling - Grasshopper allows for easy/rapid iterative process
  • White box renders display - looks great as a quick diagram export with no post-production required.
  • robust command prompts - rhino was originally made for industrial design and it flexes a lot of unique modeling commands that put it up there with SolidWorks

Cons

Onshape

  • I would like to see more functionality and options for dimensioning drawings. Customizing text positioning can be critical to optimizing a layout that has a lot of tightly packed features, unfortunately, there are not many options.
  • Version history is great in theory, but it needs a search function to make it useful. Example: There is no way to find a list of changes to "Extrusion 1" without manually going through. And the problem is that my team and I use CAD as a development tool to get an idea into 3D space, then review details with the team once there is a visual. The result is hundreds to thousands of line items in the version history, so manual searching is not feasible.
  • I don't believe that branching is useful (yes I have reviewed the self-guided material about it, and have gone through the instructor lead training).

Rhino 3D

  • Rhino has very limited sheet layout tools.
  • Grasshopper could be better integrated into the main interface.
  • Lack of backwards file compatibility can be frustrating.

Familiarity and ability to work from any location. Also easy to cooperate with potential customers, existing customers, systems users, and fabricating shops. Most of the standard designs are now in On Shape and I would like to continue using it. It is easier to run versions to clarify imrovements to the previous designs

Support is built in. It lets you take a screenshot and mark it up in the support system. It lets me easily share a document with support and they will generally investigate the issue promptly (within 24 hours, sometimes within an hour). Generally they can fix it quickly as well. I also submit feature requests this way as well and get feedback with that. No email needed! All within Onshape.

A majority of the support for Rhinoceros 3D does not come from the company itself, but from online forums and boards where other Rhinoceros 3D users outline their issues and solutions. The Rhinoceros 3D website does not offer much in-depth support and just outlines general how to's. At the same time, online forums allow for more specific issues to be addressed and solved by the Rhinoceros 3D community.

It is cloud-based, running in a browser and there is no need for software installation. Onshape has published all the source code and videos explaining how the software works. It saves all your data in a database, using multiple virtual machines to speed up regeneration time when necessary if you have complex models.

Alternatives Considered

Onshape

OnShape is based in the cloud, which comes with all the benefits one would expect vs. desktop based software. The two main things that lead me to select OnShape were cost and ease of adding new users/working as a team. Compared to SolidWorks, OnShape is not as mature and does not have as many features (yet). However I have never not been able to complete a project in OnShape because of this, there is almost always a work-around.

It's hard to compare Rhino to other modeling software as Rhino is in a niche of its own. No other software (to my knowledge) is as customizable/programmable and has such a large community and such a large amount of free, open-source addons.Rhino (and Grasshopper) can be intimidating at first but once you get familiar with it and grow your toolbox with your own scripts, so much time will be saved

Return on Investment

Onshape

  • It's hard to quantify, since this is the only software we've used, but for how much it costs (somewhere in the $100-$200 per month range per person, I think), it's way more affordable for a small company than buying 10 SW or NX licenses.

Rhino 3D

  • Right away Rhino3D is useful for simple and accurate 3D model import, repair and export all in a variety of formats.
  • Rhino3D is easy to use and learn. The time to productivity is very short with this modeling tool.
  • The price is low for the value received, a great investment.
