OpenNMS

We've been using OpenNMS for network monitoring and have been fairly happy with it. There can be a bit of a learning curve to the setup and installation which might turn some people off, but if you can work through the learning curve it's a pretty powerful tool at the awesome price of free (paid support is available).

Riverbed Modeler

Riverbed Modeler is well suited for wireless, wired, ZigBee, and Cisco networks. All these scenarios are efficiently designed and simulated using Riverbed Modeler, as all the devices are available in its object pallet, so we just need to drag and drop for the best scenario design in the given dimensions. The simulation results are around 95% accurate. However, it is not suited for data security, as data encryption algorithms are not available in Riverbed Modeler.

Pros

OpenNMS

  • When we used OpenNMS you could download the base package for free and configure it fairly easily for your own environment. You can't beat that kind of price break.
  • OpenNMS had a very nice looking GUI that was easily navigated and fairly straightforward to understand and configure.
  • There were a wide variety of add-ons available for download and implementation.

  • You can stress test your network simulation, absolutely fantastic tool, bridges Monte Carlo with visual representations of the network in question
  • Great Customer Support
  • Good training articles available online, used as a staple in university setting.

Cons

OpenNMS

  • We've had a few issues with delayed alerting.
  • I haven't quite figured out how to make topologies work yet, but I haven't spent a ton of time on it either.
  • We've also had a bit of trouble importing some MIBs, but that usually boiled down to working with the vendor to make sure we had the right MIBs and dependencies.

Riverbed Modeler

  • Riverbed Modeler needs to improve the scenarios of LAN MAN WAN, as the available scenarios under all of these follow a simple area structure that's not connected to the ISP when it comes to simulation. This generates dummy traffic.
  • Riverbed Modeler also needs to work on the selection of result sets so that, as with most designed networks, we can select any result parameter to show. All the parameters are displayed, whether they are relevant or not. It needs to display only relevant result parameters to select.
  • The back-end TCP/IP model needs more clarity to expose the structure to some changes.

Alternatives Considered

OpenNMS

OpenNMS's more attractive GUI and its price break were the main reasons our company chose to explore and use this product. However, it never managed to actually replace Nagios which had a much more established hold within the company. Perhaps we were over-monitoring, but our company claimed a $100k loss per hour of downtime.

Riverbed Modeler

The only thing comparable to OPNET is Packet Tracer, which is basic and very limited. Packet Tracer in terms of tool comparison between the two is like OPNET's stone-age relative.

Return on Investment

OpenNMS

  • We've been able to improve our customers' experience.
  • Because we're able to respond to issues quicker, we're able to better meet our SLAs.
  • We are able to see smaller problems and address them before they become big problems.

Riverbed Modeler

  • It comes with a costly paid license, but simulating the network before actual deployment saves a lot of costs, in case after deployment we feel performance is not good and we need to change. This would waste a lot of money, but Riverbed saves this money.
  • Its OPNET GURU academic edition is available free of cost, but with limited functionality, which is good for students in maximum case. This will degrade our sale of Riverbed Modeler.
  • A one-time investment in Modeler saves a lot of cost regarding networks, topology, designing, and provides a lifetime license with updates.
