Opsview Monitor

If you know Nagios or Nagios-like monitoring systems, OpsView will be really easy for you to learn and manage. Migrations process will be relatively easy. You're getting great U/I that will speed up adding new objects to the system and present data in a clear, organized way. In addition it's easy to create dedicated dashboards for your clients.

SolarWinds Virtualization Manager (VMAN)

SolarWinds Virtualization Manager (VMAN) is a product that works very well for my organization. The program is very strong in reports including under and oversizing of VMs and related resources within our on-prem deployment. The reporting tools for AWS-based resources is not as strong as the options within VMware, however, these capabilities are getting better.

Pros

Opsview Monitor

  • Easily extensible. We write many of our own monitoring plugins for Opsview and use open source Nagios community plugins as well
  • Quick to deploy. Don't need to worry about all of the dependencies that you need to with something like Nagios
  • It just works. Most of the housekeeping tasks are completely automated
  • Nice visualizations and dashboards

SolarWinds Virtualization Manager (VMAN)

  • I created custom dashboards, to view the different elements of the virtual environment. For example, you can view the number of online VMs and those off, or disconnected. You can also choose to see the status of every virtual cluster, the storage disk usage on every VM, the RAM usage, CPU usage.
  • I used this application to see the growth of virtual memory in each cluster and accordingly do forecasting for future growth. A capacity planner included in this application would help in doing accurate estimations and setting a future upgrade budget.
  • Another powerful tool was the customized reports, where i could generate reports on any element of the VM or cluster. Reports can be exported to Excel or PDF and are very useful for sharing information with colleagues and management.
  • Alerts can be customized. For example, you can set a rule to get an email alert if any virtual server RAM usage exceeds 85% and send a text message if RAM usage exceeds 90% for more than 10 minutes.

SolarWinds Virtualization Manager (VMAN)

  • We did have issues during the setup, with successfully connecting to some of our hosts and vCenters and we found support were just sending us back to articles we had already read, it was also taking long periods before getting a response. The issue is still ongoing, in fact.

Currently, there is no other tool that gives us what we need to monitor a geographically disperse environment with multiple non-related instances of VM clusters. In addition, the level of reporting, historical data trending, and alerting that VMAN provides is essential for our business process. Lastly, the effort to customize and set up any monitoring system is not trivial. This makes switching to any other product very difficult without being able to clearly demonstrate a ROI.

I find it to be very usable. This product if a must have in any IT admin arsenal. Its a wonderful tool and its integration with Orion is seamless. It provides a single pane of glass view to your products and services of your virtual environment while if provides notifications to you for the best possible support options.

SolarWinds gives good support. I have never had a time when i was working through a support case where I did not get the support I needed for the required issues to be resolved. I have always had resolutions from SolarWinds support. They are top notch. Issues once had are no more.

Pretty straighforward, as long as you check Solarwinds site for recommended installation path. KEY ITEM - be sure that you know which versions of all SolarWinds products you are using, because there are incompatability issues between versions for many products. It took me about 2 hours with a spreadsheet to figure out an upgrade path. Don't assume that the version you downloaded is the right/most current version without checking first!

Nagios and Zabbix - Opsview is much easier to setup and operate than both of them.SolarWinds Orion - Opsview is much more economical

SolarWinds Virtualization Manager (VMAN)

I've attempted to use various conglomerations of Nagios, PRTG, Spiceworks and Zabbix. None were as easy to set up, manage and alert from. None also gave me near the feature set. The out-of-the-box reports and planning features didn't exist. The manual set up was extremely time-intensive and most of that information was lost when I left those workplaces.

SolarWinds Virtualization Manager (VMAN)

  • Every business I have worked with who have adopted VMAN has seen an efficiency improvement. This means that they are able to run more guests on the same hardware, leading to an increased time before requiring further CAPEX for additional capacity.
  • Performance benefits, via heeding the recommendations within VMAN, are not to be underestimated. Once VMAN has enough metrics on your estate, it can quickly advise you which guests need more compute, but more importantly which ones are over-provisioined, and can have CPU/memory reduced! This leads to increased capacity.
