Oracle API Manager

Oracle API Manager is well suited in a business or company that make use of Apis to facilitate access of backend services and data sources by the staff or customers or both. It is also imported in situations where all actions in a system need to be attributed to specific users.

SwaggerHub

If you have a huge amount of API endpoint and a lot of team members, SwaggerHub will be really good for you and your team. Communication about changes will be much easier and everyone will comply with the changes without any further communication just by reading the documentation. If you are just starting to make an API based application on your own, you might not need it since it could be overkill.

Pros

Oracle API Manager

  • API Manager allows for REST and SOAP API's to be easily created and tracked
  • API Manager allows for only certain people/applications to use the API (does this thru a subscriber service it provides)
  • It also publishes the API's it is tracking so developers can easily know what interfaces already exist.
  • The monitoring ability is a nice feature. The admin person can easily see how and where the APIs are currently being used

SwaggerHub

  • We can make comprehensive documentation of our API.
  • Easy to share or use together for a collaborative project.
  • Start at a fairly reasonable price.

Cons

Oracle API Manager

  • Absence of Role-Based Access. A finer grain control on what type of users can call certain API Endpoints is needed.
  • Performance with third-party databases isn't as fast as using Oracle Database.
  • Long learning curve. Although Oracle API Manager provides performance and a vast deal of features, a certain level of expertise is required to effectively make use of them.

SwaggerHub

  • Would be good to have better integration with third-party software e.g. AWS Lambda, Postman, etc. for automatic testing.
  • I would like to see the documentation to be able to convert to another format e.g. MD file, wiki pages, etc.
  • We are using RESTful APIs from SOAP, so would be good if we could transform SOAP designed API to RESTful API.

Alternatives Considered

Oracle API Manager

Oracle API Manager works well for our team since a majority of the products we use are Oracle based. Our backend jobs and servers all run with PL/SQL and Oracle databases. This makes the Oracle API Manager tool the best suited for our needs as a department. Anypoint API Manager may be more suited for teams with a Salesforce based infrastructure

SwaggerHub

SwaggerHub is the best for what it can do in terms of API management and monitoring, compared to Postman, which is more like tools for everything (testing, monitoring, mock request, etc.). If you are overwhelmed with the number of API endpoints that you have and are finding it hard to document and manage its lifecycle with your team, SwaggerHub is the best choice for you.

Return on Investment

Oracle API Manager

  • Oracle API Manager supports both REST & SOAP API's.
  • Secure and attributable connection to back-end services and data sources. In addition to creating API's for querying data, you can also create API endpoints that can manipulate the data in the back-end databases.
  • Although Oracle API Manager provides performance and a vast deal of features, to start with it is really important you train your people working on development, deployment and administrators to effectively use Oracle API Manager.

SwaggerHub

  • Faster API development lifecycle.
  • Reduced discussion time when building a new vital API endpoint.
  • Complete documentation which makes the new team member onboarding process easier.
