Oracle BI Foundation Suite

For an organization that deals with a wide range of reporting needs and also has to handle huge volumes of data that are required for sourcing these reports, Oracle Business Intelligence Foundation Suite provides a great tool in terms of both performance and usage. The layered approach to usage allows both data analysts as well as business analysts to be able to use OBIEE comfortably. However, the premium licensing cost of OBIEE makes it difficult for most startups and low-budget business to afford.

Pros

  • It allows easy extension of reports from simple to complex dashboards
  • The tool goes well with Oracle DB and has great performance
  • Since the base is built on Java, it is supported to run on different platforms and portable devices

Cons

  • The tool does not support all the external databases, just works perfect with Oracle DB and few others
  • Since it is based to run on JVM, there are few new systems that has stopped using JVM and has switched to ajax and other platforms. Hence the right plugins are required to be installed in addition
  • The tool is not easy to use. A new user can not work on it unless trained or is highly techy person.

Scalability and rich integration capabilities. In the future, if we go with Hyperion for the Financial Consolidation and planning purposes -BI integration with Hyperion is going to be much simpler as it has native interface connectivity and even integration capabilities with well known CRM products (Siebel) and ERP Products (Oracle EBS, Peoplesoft, SAP) is going to be easy and straight forward.

For me or a staff memeber that uses it frequently, its usability is sufficient. However newbies could have a few issues but find their workflow

It's fast, efficient and easy to work with. Scheduling could help when planning out a day however overall it's a big plus when rolling out and supporting Oracle.

Breadth of Deployment

Oracle BI is now the enterprise reporting platform and its being used by almost all the departments with an user base of 100+. It's extensively used for quick real time reporting and all analytic needs. We've different type of users like developers, administrators, power users, executive managemet and field personnel using the application

Alternatives Considered

Compared to Microsoft BI, Oracle BI has got good data modeling, adhoc reporting, scheduling and some rich visualization capabilities which definitely made us to choose Oracle BI against Microsoft BI.Tableau BI is a very simple and easy tool to implement and helps business users and analysts to do quick reporting and information discovery but this wouldn't be able to serve the needs of an enterprise reporting tool. With Tableau we still need to purchase a tool which will satisfy the enterprise reporting needs. Hence we decided on Oracle BI which gives us the enterprise reporting platform and also the quick reporting capabilities by leveraging the BI publisher reporting capability.

Collaboration and Sharing

I like the fact that deployment is all over the web. Simply share the link to the end user of the data (be it management/department level people/field personnel)...and the data is deployed. Security is easily managed so these same people can or can't change the report. The data cannot be altered using the OBIEE environment.

OBIEE works well with the Oracle environment. Including other data sources involves IT and additional Oracle software behind the scenes. Honestly...I have only worked with OBIEE in an Oracle environment. It could easily support other data stores...check with your Oracle sales staff for other data stores that OBIEE supports. Being web-based, the underlying technology is all hidden from the person developing the reports

Return on Investment

  • It is the only way to go if you have external payroll systems such as ADP and you have implemented the Oracle time and labor solution - so pretty good.
  • The reports you need to ensure federal and state level compliance can be easily generated through OBF suite without much investment elsewhere.
  • The businesses that have recently moved on to digital systems but still need on paper reports will find it useful as well.
