Oracle Enterprise Manager Cloud Control

I wish I had an option to give it a 9.5 :) OEM Cloud Control is very well suited if you have a system with multiple implementations of Oracle Database Enterprise Edition. If you are willing to pay for the huge license cost which is typical with Oracle, then you will love to use OEM Cloud Control to monitor your entire ERP solution including web servers, applications, network, storage, and physical servers. It is not worth the buck if your's is a small implementation. Your DBA's should be able to work without depending on OEM Cloud Control.

Large deployments (on-site and cloud) where resource utilization is hard to account for. VM Turbo can analyze what is happening in your datacenter and recommend or actually implement its suggestions for performance and resource management. It also claims to know about network and disk resources and how to put VMs in the proper resources to gain performance in network and disk. We didn't really try this, but is nice to know it has some ability to be aware of network and disk.If you have your datacenter resources under strict control, VMTurbo may not help all that much. Likewise, if your datacenter is fairly flat with no tiers of storage, compute, or network performance, or if there is simply more demand than can be met, than there is not much that VMTurbo can do. It can't create IO and CPU cycles out of thin air.

Pros

Oracle Enterprise Manager Cloud Control

  • Oracle Enterprise Manager is a "one stop shop" for all of our management needs. This is helpful because it minimizes the management of the management software itself. There are less upgrades and connectivity issues to handle. And there are "plug-ins" for additional products we use like Blue Medora's one for PostgreSQL.
  • Managing administrative jobs can be burdensome in a shop with dozens of servers and databases. OEM Cloud Control makes it easy since you can view all the jobs for all servers in one place. It is easy to filter on jobs with problems or the like so that you can quickly look at the logs and fix the issues.
  • Tuning PL/SQL is much easier using OEM Cloud Control. Most DBAs are familiar with trace files and TKPROF, but not having to do those things at a command line smooths the process out. The graphical interface makes it easier to show developers exactly what the issues are. This makes for less finger-pointing and quicker resolution of performance problems.
  • Proactive management is easier using OEM Cloud Control. Before having the gui, I had a collection of scripts that I would have to install on each database server, then set up cron jobs to run them. When Oracle was upgraded, those scripts might have to be updated on each and every server. OEM Cloud Control has those things built in. You can choose exactly which metrics are important to you. And you can keep performance graphs up all day on a second monitor to let you instantly see when something might cause a problem.

  • SQL and Exchange analytics. Looking into these heavy workloads helps resolve performance issues and allows administrators to properly adjust thresholds and CPU/Memory settings to maximize their Virtual platforms.
  • Detailed recommendations. Having the details around what adjustments are needing to be made to a virtual machine is paramount in getting business owners to agree to the change. Without it - IT is merely bogged down in the sand.

Cons

Oracle Enterprise Manager Cloud Control

  • Oracle Enterprise Manager Cloud Control can do a better job in actively managing (as opposed to monitoring) non-Oracle IT components including non-Oracle database, middleware, and storage.
  • The UI is less responsive and sometimes slow and the user experience could certainly be improved.
  • There is also an issue with positioning as other Oracle products sometimes come with their own versions of management console so it is hard to justify paying for Oracle Enterprise Manager Cloud Control separately or as a new attachment.

  • It would be nice if the UI included a break-down of features that are both licensed as well as un-licensed. That way, you could not only see what you have, but what you don't.
  • The right-sizing recommendations are great, but very little info is given about why the recommendation is being made. More info would not only increase understanding, but would also help drive decision-making.

This product has been a great addition to our tools. Moving forward, I can only see us purchasing additional licenses in order to expand the features we are able to use. In my opinion, the more end-to-end monitoring we have from the users to the backend infrastructure, the better we can ensure the environment is stable and will perform to the level that the business expects

I wanted to give it a 10 but the heavily loaded solution makes it slow to load and refresh pages. Even bouncing the OEM Cloud Control takes around 10 mins which is quite long.

I have found the product to be very easy to work with and manage. Upgrades are performed through the web interface. This includes downloading the new file and applying the upgrade to the appliance. Overall, the interface and the various tabs are self explanatory. This was purchased as a replacement for vCenter Operations manager and it proven to have not only more functionality, but is easier to use and manage. The other advantage is that it works with multiple hypervisors as well as storage vendors making it a definite plus over other solutions when you have a heterogeneous environment

Just this week we had an issue where security permissions we had done wrong were causing problems in VMTurbo Operations Manager. Despite this being our fault the service request was handled very quickly. In addition we are routinely contacted proactively to see if there is anything we need or they could do for us.

Alex (from VMTurbo) has worked with the product for years and helped develop the product. He was very knowledgeable and was able to provide our support team with details knowledge on how to get our deployment configured correctly as well as help with another VMTurbo POC within another customers environment.

There is value to be had in just doing a "click install" and then just evaluating and following recommendations. However, that is nowhere near the benefit you will get from the very powerful custom reporting if someone is willing to take the time to master this platform that can be somewhat demanding at that level.

I used many other Oracle products (like Database, Middleware, Identity Management, etc.) but I have yet to review them.

We have used vCenter and vFoglight for management and also evaluated Solar Winds and Cloud Physics. Each of those systems had some pros and cons, but overall we found that VMTurbo had the things that we wanted and also things that we didn't even know were possible. We had been using the Foglight tool mostly, and in general, I could configure it to do many of the things that VMTurbo does, but it took quite a bit of time to do it. We don't want to have a person whose only job is to manage the software to manage our virtualization environment and who is the only one who even understands how the thing works. We just found that VMTurbo had the right combination of integration with VMware and visibility into the environment.

Return on Investment

Oracle Enterprise Manager Cloud Control

  • It was very quick to implement the monitoring of our database infrastructure using OEM Cloud Control.
  • It reduced the amount of effort our team would have spent creating and managing numerous background monitoring scripts.
  • It's very helpful when somebody reports performance bottlenecks.
Anonymous | TrustRadius Reviewer

Turbonomic

  • Reduced the need to expand our physical server footprint for the past 2 years.
  • Reduced our VMware support renewal due to a reduction in license use - spare hosts have been removed from the cluster.
  • VMs that suppliers had over spec'd are now correctly sized reducing host resource use and in some cases improving performance.
