To anyone in my industry, I would not recommend this to them. However, if they are just a restaurant or a bar, then, yes. I can recommend it. Micros is just a software version of an analog cash register. Its only purpose is to ring in items and take payments, that's it. And it does that very well. If you need Micros to interface with other software you're going to have a bad time. FECs should stay away but restaurants/bars should jump on it.

Square POS

Perfect for small and medium sized businesses with a customer-facing function that require a system for collecting payments. It is both a credit card processor as well as a simple till for cash transactions. It integrates well with certain e-commerce providers, allowing you to sell website stock in person and thus prevent double-selling of inventory. We had a mixture of website items pre-programmed into the system, as well as some fixed price buttons for commonly sold items, and for the rest we simply entered the price. Super flexible. We could use it when we travelled away from the shop and relied on 4G connectivity. We had separate accounts for separate team members. I hear it works well for restaurant-type businesses in terms of its options but it's not something I have experience of

Pros

Oracle Hospitality

  • Micros' hardware has above average longevity, so long as you don't have a touchscreen in the kitchen.
  • Micros has a number of companies that allow integration into the POS, allowing you to add on pieces as you see fit.

Square POS

  • After you set a daily processing deadline time, charges processed by that time are deposited the next business day.
  • The reporting dash board looks overwhelming but that's because it has all of the the information that you've processed before. That was invaluable when we recently went to look at the detail on a two year old transaction and were able to find the information by ourselves.
  • The ability to use multiple devices is great. We can process charges on a computer, a tablet, or even a smartphone.
  • Receipts are automatically sent to the customer's preferred email or texted to their phone.

Cons

Oracle Hospitality

  • Difficult to learn "coding" screen setup.
  • Outdated back of house operating system.
  • Hardware space - We always seem to run out of space on our back of house computer due to the size of the MICROS files.
  • Customer service is subpar. Reps on the phone never seem to know who I need to be transferred to to resolve my issue.
  • Hold time on customer service phone line. Every time I've called MICROS for help the call never takes less than 30+ minutes.
  • Customer service operations consistency. There's always a different solution for an issue when I call.

Square POS

  • If you have to enter the card manually, the transaction fee is 1% higher. We keep cards on file for wholesale orders and often run them through this way. Using Square Invoicing (having customers pay on their end) can avoid this problem.
  • Using the app on a phone, you can't access sales summaries. You have to download an additional app, Square Dashboard to view these things.
  • The chip card reader we use works well sometimes and seems to go in and out other times.

It has been a great investment for me thus far, so I have no reason to look elsewhere.

I have never had a negative experience with the support team for Square POS. They made the whole setup easy for me and answered all the questions I had when comparing payment options at the beginning of my search a couple years ago. I have nothing negative to say about support!

Alternatives Considered

Oracle Hospitality

CenterEdge is the point of sale we replaced 5 years ago and it was not by choice. I could get into specifics as to why the change was made to Micros but for our type of business, it is just not a good fit. I've said this countless times and I will say it again, Micros is great for restaurants and bars just not for our business model. If you have one of those types of businesses where you just sell food and drink, go for it! But if you need something that will tie multiple attractions, food and beverage, and entertainment into one point of sale. Look elsewhere like CenterEdge, which I have reviewed on here and is great for FECs. We have moved back to as it works with our type of business.

Square POS

Quickbooks GoPayment was not easy to integrate with its software. We were still having to manually import all transactions just to track the income. Square makes it easy to organize all the data at your fingertips and easy to download the info in different formats for easy import.

Return on Investment

Oracle Hospitality

  • Micros has allowed us to leverage our margin by using our own credit processor and loyalty program. We've seen success from both of these platforms (not Micros) and have been able to save money on the extra costs of using Micros.

Square POS

  • We are able to track our clients' and customers' spending habits, and cater marketing to different types of consumers easily.
  • No hassle; the flat fee, while seemingly steep compared to other merchant service providers up front, is just that, flat. There's no extra costs or service fees attached to the processing fee, and the services available more than make it worth while.
  • Invoicing and payments online have added a more secure option than taking payments over the phone.
