Pentaho

The tool is fast, visually attractive and intuitive to use, but we also have an implementation of Qlik Sense and Pentaho pales in comparison to the overall capabilities. I recommend the tool, but everyone’s solution need is unique, so it may not be the right fit. Larger tools like Qlik are more versatile and easier to recommend. More expensive, yes, but you usually get what you pay for.

Alteryx Analytics

Well suited: if an organization already has a lot of running ETLs or pipelines but need to systemize them, Alteryx is a good choice. It would be good to figure out how well Alteryx would be harmonized with the existing components, but in a general sense, it may be well harmonized. Less appropriate: Alteryx is good for "automation", but some data developers and analysts may prefer to remain and keep using SQL tools. One should be careful of not just adding "one more layer or tool" into the existing pipeline and make it more complicated to manage.

Pros

  • Being able to use the OLAP Analyzer tool saved our organization a lot of time in not needing to develop an OLAP tool on our own.
  • The ability to customize the tool and integrate all the internationalization we required was pretty straightforward.

  • Alteryx democratizes data and quickly allows analysts the ability to turn data into intelligence. Data exploration can take new depths as users are capable of interrogating larger sets of data in reduced timeframes. Processes timeframes are reduced to fractions of their legacy counterparts.
  • Innovation has been accelerated by using Alteryx to develop quick prototypes that can rapidly be deployed for production use. Similarly, we have used Alteryx to replatform legacy systems. The transition to Alteryx not only reduces the infrastructure requirements, but also places the application/product into a new paradigm for processing, allowing innovative enhancements that were once limited by the legacy system(s).
  • Alteryx is a viral application. We've used Alteryx course training, in-house training, webinars and videos and our user community continues to grow. Alteryx is feature rich and each version of software builds reliably on prior versions. New users quickly come to speed on Alteryx and supoprt requirements for new users is minimal.

Cons

  • The Mondrian code was hard to learn.
  • The availability of resources that had experience with Pentaho and Mondrian was limited for us.
  • The dashboards were slow and we found that it ended up being easier to remove the Pentaho pieces of the dashboard.
No photo available
  • Alteryx lacks good visualization capabilities
  • Alteryx does not run on Mac(IOS)
  • Alteryx is not as stable as some of the enterprise-grade tools like DataStage

Although the security piece is a major game changer in our shop, Pentaho is a great tool overall. I have known other shops to work out their security issues with Pentaho and do great things so we'll need to get through this growing pain point as well and make Pentaho our positive game changer. I am excited to see the improvements in Pentaho 5 and look forward to evangelizing it's benefits over the more high priced solutions out there

Usability

Pentaho5.0
Based on 1 answer
I would have liked some hands on help in trying to match what Customers were already used to. Plus having a team of Java/BI folks was difficult to assemble since what required to be done in an object oriented fashion could have easily been done via a SQL construct. This hash of technologies was difficult to manage.

Through a graphical UI one can perform engineering and development, other vendors do not have such a code-less interface.

I use many programs and compared to others, Alteryx virtually never goes down, freezes up or gives an application error. Over a 4 year time period that I have used this program, any of these may have happened 3 times. It is an incredibly stable program that I feel completely confident in.

Online Training

Course Taken: DI1000 Pentaho Data Integration FundamentalsSetup A week before your class started, the instructor will start sending out class material and lab setup instructions. This is helpful so that you understand how the environment is laid out and can start reviewing the content. Ultimately it saved about a 1/2 day trying to setup with 10 other people online which was great! The CourseThe 3-day course was laid out like many other technical classes with 15-30 minutes instruction and 15-60 minutes of lab exercises. The instructor was very knowledgeable with the functionality from version to version and answered questions as we went along. I was amazed at some of the functionality that was available that I was not using at the time and quickly implemented changes to many existing transformations and jobs. The novice users seemed to catch on quickly and more experienced users explained how some of the functionality was used in their home environments. Towards the end there was enough time so that we were able to ask very directed questions about our own environments. Overall, I really found the class to be informative and deliver enough information to be dangerous. My skills improved and I was able to design better and efficient transformations for the HIE. Implementation

Pentaho5.0
Based on 1 answer
Get the right people in before starting implementation. Start small and build as you go approach is time consuming and involves lot of rework.Evangalize within the organization the capabilities and limitations equally so that correct delivery expectations are set.Set expectations with the Customer that the tool cannot replace proprietary software in terms of stability/usability and that timelines could change given the new ness of the product.

There is really not much to it (the installation, that is). Once you get it installed, along with any of the add-ons (demographics, R, etc.), you are up and running almost immediately. There is really no additional setup. You can immediately begin blending data, running demographics, performing spatial queries, running predictive analysis, etc. And for many of these functions, the learning curve is quite easy.

Breadth of Deployment

This is not a relevant question, it is in the background. But I can say that when we add a new module / department we need to bring the data from more tables and sources.
Itamar Steinberg profile photo
Our company kept it contained in the marketing department. Other departments may not understand it.

Alternatives Considered

We evaluated many typical BI software vendors including Micro-strategy, JasperSoft and Tableau. Tableau would have been a top pick if it had better support for OEM. We had to compete against Tableau in many customers to try to get them to upgrade to use our analytics and found that they were very hard to displace due to how easy it is to use.The organization I worked for had been through other partnerships with Micro-strategy and I believe that may have had an impact on them not wanting to use them again, but I was not involved in the final decisions on that.

I had used RapidMiner before and Alteryx is way ahead of it in every aspect. I also have used IBM Watson to some extent and preferred Alteryx because of its blending capabilities, ease of use for everyone on the team and the ability to easily use R with it (as R was the second most popular language we used). I have heard IBM SPSS has some features better than Alteryx but haven't had a chance to use it as yet. At this point though we do not think we are moving anywhere away from Alteryx.

It is very easy to share the platform with a given set of users which makes collaboration really easy. Access control makes it easier for us to give access to different teams for viewing some of the parts with which they might be working without having to worry about the rest getting disturbed.

That is the best feature according to me. I could use data from a wide range of sources and it was pretty easy to merge all of them which isn't really an easy thing to do. It makes our life a lot easier when the blending capabilities are so easy to manage. Don't have to worry about having only a specific type of data source.
