RingCentral

RingCentral excels for us in office environments where everyone has/needs an individual phone (either desk or via their computer). It is also uniquely suited for situations where workers may move between offices, work from home either during the day or after hours, or be on call in the evenings or weekends. The capabilities of the smartphone app means you are always on the office phone system, even showing a Caller ID as your office when calling a prospect, client, etc. This has been a surprising and much-liked feature for attorney's who don't want to expose their cell or home phone numbers in a call. Located in a hurricane-prone state, RingCentral is ideal for their resiliency to disaster that can keep local businesses connected and working after a hurricane. Having experienced that multiple times in the last 16 years with RingCentral, I can say that they have always worked flawlessly for us.

Slack

Slack is very good with the conversation and calling features. We can snooze notification where we want. We can sent mail to the particular channel's member directly from Slack. We can't see last seen of the user which is in our chats or group. The UI of Slack is look like old needs to improve in the UI and themes.

Pros

RingCentral

  • RingCentral service is solid and resilient to issues.
  • RingCentral is easy to manage as an admin. Users, login styles, extensions, hardware, extensions, and more are always configurable and it makes it easy to support users.
  • RingCentral offers many hardware options. It is easy to procure new hardware as well as outfit older hardware with the help of an adapter.

Slack

  • The main feature that I love about Slack is the section below the main panel, where I can access unread messages, specific threads of conversations and also gives me access to all the mentions that have been during my downtime . In addition, I also have a visualization of the messages saved in this section, so I have everything in one place, everything very organized.
  • Slack has an excellent integration with the Marketing system of our company, in this way we can have a wide administration of emails and marketing automation while conducting a team conversation. This integration is quite functional and has a very notable success for our Marketing sector, we can have long conversations while managing the marketing, all from one place.
  • I love the notification system that Slack has, it's the great synchronization it has. Slack allows me to receive notifications on all devices linked to my Slack account, which helps me receive notifications on my phone and also on my desktop computer. These notifications are sent simultaneously, which allows me to be active and view all the movement that occurs in the chat channels.

Cons

RingCentral

  • The team chat interface of the Glip application (also called Jupiter) isn't as refined as other chat interfaces. For example, it doesn't indicate when team members have read a message.
  • The integration of Glip with on-premise Exchange is non-existent and not on the development radar.
  • RingCentral personnel were not familiar with supporting paging devices, even though the platform does offer integration with some paging equipment manufacturers.

Slack

  • The search feature could really be improved. It is quite difficult to find something specific with the search function as no matter the parameters and filters that you set, it seems to never return what you are looking for.
  • The UI could use some help. The basics are there and easy to use, but Slack offers a ton of ways to customize the experience and this causes the setting screen to be a huge convoluted mess, but also switches and options can be found in numerous places. This makes it quite difficult when you are trying to find a specific option or need to know if it even exists.
  • The Android mobile app (can't speak for iOS) can be buggy at times. Navigation sometimes doesn't work as expected and the read/unread status on the contact list can be erroneous. I mostly use it for after hours messaging so it's very light use and therefore not a big issue, but it could be annoying to a mobile-only workforce.

We are grandfathered into our unlimited toll-free minutes plan. We are very unlikely to switch because of that. It has been the major factor saving us a lot of money compared to switching to other solutions. I don't know any other company that still offers these unlimited plans.

It is just an all around excellent product for a company with over 100 employees whom work in various locations around the country. We have remote workers, as well as people that work in the office every shift, so it makes it much easier to communicate with everybody in the simplest and fastest way.

RingCentral is a flexible and versatile platform. But there is always room for improvement. While I as a technologically inclined user have no problem navigating the interface and configuring my extension to my hearts content. I have had some negative experiences with less technologically inclined users having difficulty with the smartphone app (mostly they are trying to handle calls while in areas with poor 4G signal), I wish RingCentral had a better way of handling these calls or rejecting them if data rates are too low.

Everything just works. I think the navigation and usability is quite intuitive. I have never had to look up any information or google how to use a feature of Slack (both in the desktop form and on the mobile app). I've never heard any complaints from our other employees either. I have been asked to remind people how to set up reminders, ironically. Although that itself is really simple too (you type "/remind" and then the reminder details).

Their customer support is top notch an provide us with all the answers we need quickly and concisely. We especially appreciated their Installation Services team who got us up and running on their platform within the short time frame we presented and had almost flawless performance in porting our services over to their platform

I've never had to contact support for Slack which is a great testament to its ease and use. Adding people outside of the organization takes a little getting used to, but ultimately allows for greater collaboration between FTE and contractors. There is no clear alternative to this software, so it's the best we can do for now.

If someone has an existing system I tell them to keep that running initially and keep RingCentral separate initially until the system is configured and tested to one's satisfaction. After testing and configuration is completed, then roll over the main phone numbers to the new RingCentral system. I've seen one person who immediately flipped over to RingCentral without properly configuring/testing the software and had many issues with missed customer calls until I helped him sort out his configuration

It always helps if you communicate to everyone in the organization how important it is to drop whatever other chat tools they are using and jump quickly to Slack. They will all fall in love with it.

Alternatives Considered

RingCentral

We used Vonage and a local softphone called Communicator prior to switching to RingCentral. Vonage dropped calls left and right and made it very difficult to use in general. Communicator linked to our CRMs, which was nice, but when installing call forwarding it automatically uploaded all CRM contacts into our personal phones and did not remove them even when the program was deleted. This was incredibly annoying, as in order to make a personal call to someone in our contacts, we had to sift through tens of thousands of contacts. RingCentral is simple, user friendly, and only does what it needs to.

Slack

Simply put, Slack is a much more robust and comprehensive tool.
  • Conversations & discussions in Slack can easily be reviewed & are searchable. Skype for Business doesn't offer this.
  • Slack offers a clear-cut "Workplace Directory" that's easy to use. Skype for Business didn't quite offer this.
  • Slack allows for creation of topic-specific "channels" of discussion, in addition to the easy forming of groups (a direct message thread including specific individuals -- fantastic for team-specific communication). Skype for Business doesn't have the option for discussion channels.

Return on Investment

RingCentral

  • Low-cost teleconferencing and web-conferencing - Competitors for either can easily cost just as much as the full RingCentral platform
  • Able to offer more customized services to partners/clients
  • No need for any special hardware - just need a computer with internet
  • Low investment to integrate with a CRM

Slack

  • Slack has allowed us to effectively collaborate with a wide range of collaborators, especially outside vendors, contractors, and service providers. Its integrated document sharing and videoconferencing features make it a powerful collaboration tool.
  • Until recently, we utilized the free version of Slack, but this version does not support long-term storage of conversations and shared documents. However, as an EDU customer, it was surprisingly painless to move to a premium paid account.
  • Slack definitely carries its corporate culture of "fun productivity" with it -- sometimes, the utility of its robust chat feature set can be offset by its ability to distract end-users with silly reaction emojis and meme threads..but this is a risk with any communications tool with a modern feature set.
