Rubrik

It is by far the easiest and well thought out backup solution I've encountered. If you have requirements to archive into AWS, Azure, or GCP, it is extremely easy to configure. You will be up and archiving in minutes. The SLA based job scheduling is very intuitive. The only negative or less appropriate usage I can think of would be the instantiation piece. It takes several hours to instantiate one VM to a cloud environment. This could be our lack of bandwidth, but it is only feasible for a long term DR scenario.

  • Very good for a backup that is also used for frequent access (like a remote HD) and is easy to share.
  • Not 100% reliable as a full copy (like TimeMachine) of the HD, but not far off.

  • Simplified backup. Rubrik integrates well with modern data-center technologies. Rubrik backups are SLA-based, and you can apply SLAs to different levels of your infrastructure, e.g. from granular VM-based assignments to covering whole site with few clicks.
  • Simplified restore. Easy to use interface allows for delegation of restores to any user group.
  • Simplified backup to cloud makes replacing outdated backup targets, such as tape libraries, an easy task.
  • Simplified DR to cloud. In addition to the ability to mount restored virtual machines from the Rubrik appliances itself, Rubrik allows you to spin up backed up to the cloud instances in Azure cloud.

Rubrik

  • I would like to have the ability to set expiration dates for relics. When VMs are deleted, the backups (relics) require manual intervention to remove, and I may not want them removed right away.
  • Integration of multiple clusters into a single dashboard.
  • I'd like to see more granular control of SLA retentions.

We have been very satisficed with Rubrik over the years that we have been using the product. We have seen a few minor issues with some of the upgrades that have been applied, but overall the product works and is easy to use. Our SQL DBA's love the product to manage their SQL server backups because the restores are fast and can be done at the database level.

Rubrik has a simple to use interface and day to day management is very simple yet it doesn't sacrifice flexibility. Expanding capacity as data grows is very easy and does not require downtime. Upgrading is simple and efficient. Setup and configuration are straight forward.

I have had nothing but great service from Rubrik's support. The support tunnel option is great as they can connect without the need for WebEx or JoinMe to work on your cluster. They are always willing to perform upgrades even though upgrading is super easy for the customer, but some would prefer support to do them.

Alternatives Considered

Rubrik

Veeam is the closest to Rubrik but still cannot compare in its simplicity and success rates. The others just don't even compare, heck you have to have a PHD just to use CommVault

From my research, SysTools was chosen mainly due to its simplicity. Other software tends to add a lot of eye candy, which for me was not necessary. I needed something that I could configure and leave running in the background relatively unnoticed. SysTools provided that with little interruption to my daily activities.

  • Reduces time of sharing files and working on them collaboratively, in fairly large groups. We stopped using email attachments.
  • Reduce recovery time from a faulty or retired PC.
  • Reduce time of recovering old and large files we do not keep offline.
