Salesforce CMS

If you have a company that is sales driven and that has plenty of requirements as far as sales information, quotations, and invoicing. Your company has to have a lot of sales movement and sales requirements for a CRM solution to work and to work well. The company has to have a certain size of sales and clients since Salesforce is a costly solution that has to make sense as far as purchasing and expenses go. Also, it works great for any company that has a traditional (funnel) sales process, since it makes it easier to use this model to drive the options down the funnel and generate real sales and real money

Sitecore Experience Platform

Sitecore can be a good solution for a company wanting a premium product and is really looking to leverage the platform for advanced digital marketing capabilities. If a company isn't mature enough to utilize all of what Sitecore has to offer, or is just basically looking for a CMS, there are other options that may be a better value.

Pros

Salesforce CMS

  • Easy to use, just like Salesforce's other products. Many users can sit down and figure it out in no time, and with a little training become power users.
  • Fast and secure - Salesforce is a leader in the cloud world so you get consistently fast results and security that is top notch in the industry.
  • Accessible from anywhere - if you use cloud CMS already this is a no-brainer, but for those that do in-house CMS still, this is a major difference. Mobile access from anywhere on the planet without a VPN is something you just can't do without the cloud.

Sitecore Experience Platform

  • Sitecore has a decent supply of out of the box components and capabilities that can be fairly easily styled to meet business needs without much customization needed. This often helps speed to market.
  • Sitecore has had the flexibility of offering on-premise hosting or cloud hosting to meet different needs of clients, though recently they have strongly pushed their cloud-based hosting. This is in alignment with the industry and very helpful for organizations that aren't looking to add another product to the portfolio of packages that their internal IT teams need to manage
  • Sitecore has a capable UI for editing content. Though some competition may do better in this regard, Sitecore's editing interface is fully capable.

Cons

Salesforce CMS

  • Platform is so robust it can be overwhelming when starting a report from scratch
  • Key words in the Search column have to be fairly specific
  • Lot's of training is Salesforce Trailhead that it can be a bit daunting to decide what to learn about that is applicable to our organization

Sitecore Experience Platform

  • While the UI is capable, some other products in this space have a much more intuitive editing interface. Sitecore could do better in providing an easy to use editing UI.
  • It would be nice to see a fully managed Sitecore instead of just cloud hosted
  • The price falls more to the premium side of things. Making the value proposition a bit harder to justify

It's super awkward if you aren't familiar with it. I have several years' experience in both my organization's salesforce as well as others and there are still things that trip me up. I think Salesforce can get to a point where it's TOO bloated with all this information, all these integrations, what-have-you, that it can be difficult to find what you need in a timely manner or it creates a hiccup in workflows that you then have to work around. On the other hand, once these issues are identified, there is the possibility to manipulate Salesforce into creating automated workarounds. So, at least it allows for that. I think it's an issue of having so many options for bolt-ons that you start to lose perspective and functionality. You tend to lose focus on usability for users.

I'm not sure - we have hired a person/team that are Salesforce Admin so when I have a question or need support I go in-house. But, I know Salesforce has incredible L+D and trainings available for free to help users develop in their skillsets.

Alternatives Considered

Salesforce CMS

Salesforce CMS beats the competition due to UI, user friendliness, support, and ease of use as well as deployment. The entire system and process is simple to understand, has many different places for you to store key information, and is easily implemented at your company. You're getting a trusted brand with reliable customer service. I could not think of using any other program.

Sitecore Experience Platform

All of these platforms have their pros and cons. Selecting the best fit is a matter aligning corporate need vs features provided. Have a .NET shop with an advanced marketing team looking to push UX forward and willing to pay a premium, then Sitecore may be the right fit. Have an organization centered around Java and only looking for basic CMS capabilities or looking for a budget-friendly option, then there may be better options beyond Sitecore.

Return on Investment

Salesforce CMS

  • It helps organize customer information which is essential in every sale
  • It easily automates or links with other platforms, including the organization online website or shop
  • It can be difficult to use at first and quite overwhelming if staff is not trained to use it

Sitecore Experience Platform

  • For mature marketing organizations, the analytics that Sitecore allows you to capture have been valuable in pushing forward marketing objectives and giving insight into how to tailor content for the best UX
