Salt Open Source

Salt Open Source Automation Engine is great for configuring servers in a centralised manner. It is not well suited for creating infrastructure, where tools like Terraform should be used instead.

WatchGuard Network Security

Well suited to all Small businesses through to Medium-sized Enterprises, and Education Facilities. For small businesses, it is a flexible unit, that includes all the tools needed in 1 hardware and subscription package. Through to larger organizations with a leading throughput when all security services are running. It is great if you have a need to connect to any business partner sites via customized VPN connections, its configuration flexibility allowing it to connect to any other brand of the corporate firewall. An example is where a client had a need to do security and web filtering for both securities and for the category of websites allowed, while also needing to connect to several different business services suppliers. We were able to easily set up 2 units in Hardware Failover VPN for remote users to connect from laptops and desktops including Windows and Mac operating systems Connect to a Cisco VPN, Amazon VPN, Juniper Firewall 10 Gb Interfaces MFA for Remote User VPN Access to Youtube Education channels while restricting Students and Teachers, and having [fewer] restrictions for Administrative Staff.

WatchGuard Network Security

  • Watchguard policy creation can really get complicated. When you create a policy you can create a proxy action which ties to a proxy action, per the protocol which ties to a proxy action for that protocol, which ties to the web blocker policy that can be adjusted per its own web blocker action. Each of these steps can be confusing especially if you don't have a consistent naming convention to tie back to the original policy. It does work though you just have to be consistent.
  • I can't manage 3rd party certificates from the system manager because the function is not there. If you go to the help WatchGuard website it directs you to Firebox System Manager - View - Certificates and you can import certificates. Those instructions are outdated as the "view" option in not even available anymore. You can go to file - certificates, but that only brings up a window that say the system manager will retrieve the new certificates as needed. You can manage and import a 3rd party certificate from the web interface by going to system - certificates, but I prefer one pane of glass.
  • In the Aliases section, Watchguard should include "in brackets" after each alias if it's in use or not. Within the Watchguard Policy Manager, if you go to setup - actions - proxies .. . WatchGuard already lists out which proxy actions are not in use by putting in brackets after the action (not used). Such a simple thing, but if you add this to aliases it would make cleanup of old aliases much easier instead of having to hunt thru every policy. Maybe make a report function that would list all the policies that an alias is in.

Ever since 2007, WatchGuard Fireboxes and WatchGuard network layer security solutions have been the most security effective with the lowest TCO of any solution on the market when properly implemented and properly maintained. As with any network layer security solution, the underlying network must first be architected correctly in order to facilitate network layer security, but then an extremely highly skilled network security architect must device, implement, and maintain a network layer security solution in order to achieve efficacy. This is true of any network layer security solution. Few people worldwide have that skill. However, WatchGuard technologies when implemented and supported by a qualified partner are able to deliver that solution very cost-effectively to the SMB space. No other solution can achieve that.

I first started using WatchGuard firewalls about 20 years ago and found them easy to pick up and learn. Since then I have had experience with many other types--Sonicwalls, Palo Altos, and Cisco Meraki, just to name a few--and I still find the that WatchGuard is the easiest to deploy and work with. I still use the management software (vs. the newer web interface) and it's just very easy to find what I need and to make changes.

I give this rating as a result of almost 20 years of interfacing with WatchGuard technical support. Of all my vendors that I have to deal with WatchGuard is one of the best I have ever dealt with bar none. I have seldom finished a call to them without a solution. If they by chance don't have the solution, they will figure it out and get back to you ASAP as well as update the casefile online. Technical support is available via phone and web portal. It takes a few minutes to create a case online, assign a priority and submit. They get back to you depending on the critical nature of the issue, but you can expect urgent attention for critical and catastrophic issues.

To effectively deploy WatchGuard, I recommend a four-part approach. - Preparing for firewall system deployment - Configuring your firewall system to reflect your security policy - Testing your firewall system to ensure it performs according to your specifications - Deploying the correctly configured firewall system appliance.

Overall, the two products are very comparable to one another. In the end, it came down to throughput vs cost. WatchGuard [Network Security] came in at around half the cost for the device that provided the amount of throughput that we needed. All of the other features were neck and neck.
