SAP BW

SAP BW is best for:1. Large enterprises2. Enterprises with 3+ legacy systems with entrenched users (politically difficult to merge)3. Enterprises with employees who can understand both the technical capabilities of SAP BW and the needs of the business users - ability to speak both languages, otherwise the program could be unwieldy and potentially underutilized (it's not particularly inexpensive)SAP BW is less appropriate for:1. Small enterprises2. Enterprises who have well established, same location, CRM and UFS - the integration of data analysis will be easier and less expensive with other solutions3. HANA

SAP HANA

SAP HANA is best suited for applications and analytics since it provides quick and reliable data management and extraction. Although SAP HANA is extremely useful and proven by its sophisticated and fast algorithms, it does take a significant amount of time and a great depth of knowledge to implement it.

Pros

SAP BW

  • different data models like sementic data model for different data management systems
  • can easily integrate and generate the reports from different sources like XML file uploading, 3rd party data sources etc...

SAP HANA

  • Multi Store Tables - allowing to store data in default store and extended store as per data ageing.
  • In Production Environment it allows same host deployments (Hana host + Dynamic Tiering). No need to have separate dedicated server for each of them.
  • Incremental and differential backups - Reducing backup times and storage requirements.

Cons

SAP BW

  • I wish it could hold a part where even though it is not in use yet, but you know you will need it, it won't allow it to be checked it rather than put on backorder.
  • Some of the menu paths can be a little difficult to remember or follow.
  • It is not easy for a novice user to go in and create a report quickly.

SAP HANA

  • Support - hard to find resources online so you are often dealing with an issue for a while.
  • UI could be more intuative, takes a while to get use to or train users.
  • Using a couple of models can make it not respond effectively.
  • Doesn't support text data type.

At this moment we are not focusing on SAP, however would love to in the future. This is primarily because of our limited ability to generate more revenue to fund for SAP partnerships and products. Our initial tryst with SAP Partneredge open ecosystem didn't go as planned and we have shelved that for now. Hope we can revive in the future

It basically stores all data I need in designed reports, which helps a lot with the analysis and calculation. It's quite interactive when you understand reports and know how to drill-down/swap. Fresh users might need some training. There are quite a lot of options to display data differently, or to add more filters in data as well as to extract the data in xlsx/csv/html format.

In addition to the points described in the previous parts of the review, I believe that as I gain more experience with the product over time, I will be able to better describe my experience with this tool. Meanwhile, I can confirm that the possibilities presented to my organization by the change to SAP HANA, at the moment, have been very important to evolve the analytical and strategic field towards a new path.

SAP HANA is stable product now. However, we would be interested an even better and clearly defined roadmap. In terms of availability of technical resources with enough expertise to handle complex business challenges, SAP needs to take up the initiative of enabling partners and larger community. Better awareness around best practice content and tighter integration between SIs and product vendor is required.

Alternatives Considered

SAP BW

SAP Business Warehouse scores higher in data warehouse functionalities for integration to SAP ERP and other SAP solutions such as SAP CRM, SAP APO, and SAP SRM. Standard SAP data source extractors which are available in SAP ERP can be used immediately for full or delta replication into SAP Business Warehouse. System governance in SAP Business Warehouse is top-notch with change management support for migration between system landscape from the development system to production system.

[Despite] of the high operational costs involved I can vouch for the fact the new [SAP] HANA cloud solution is by far worth it as they have included a significant amount of machine learning features, introduced a new computational algorithm a more improved ui and also the general security and robust performance on offer.

Return on Investment

SAP BW

  • The positive Return on Investment we receive with the software was the ability to import decades of data. We were then able to review the materials see trends we were previously unable to see without intense work.
  • The only negative impact was applying the training and changing procedures to deal with the software. This worked out, obviously, because this is not a software to be using without proper training.

SAP HANA

  • The [strategies] and the time consumed on migrating to HANA was time [consuming] and costly during the initial phases of the project.
  • The time and resources utilized to set up the infra plan from requirements to production was huge.
  • But once we were getting into cadence of utilizing the open architecture of HANA we were able to utilize its features that helped us to leverage.
  • Again I would say that overall for us HANA [has] proved to be worth spending for as it helped us achieve our business's objectives.
