SAP Data Intelligence

Organizations over time generate large sprwals of seemingly irrelatable data. Departments and business units are always on a quest to serve the customers and face outwards. There is never enough time or resources to make sense of data internally. This is where SAP Data Intelligence will allow businesses to leverage data in an unified manner. It's applications include integration, aggregation and processing of data.

SAS/Access

SAS/Access is well suited for companies who need to manipulate and analyze large databases and data-sets. It does the same thing as SQL, and if you already know basic SAS coding it is easier to pick up. SAS/Access works well with analyzing data from multiple data-sources at once, including large databases stored in external and virtual environments like Hadoop. Data can be easily reassembled from relational databases for use by the user. SAS/Access is not necessary if you are only pulling data from one database that you have the physical file for.

Pros

SAP Data Intelligence

  • It integrates well with our current ecosystem of SAP products, like HANA.
  • It provides end-to-end machine learning operations, with tools for the complete model life cycle.
  • It has a simple user interface for novice users, with complex tools also available for power users.
  • It builds on SAP Data Hub, providing all the ETL functions of that tool with additional machine learning functionality.
  • It can run in the cloud, no on-premise software management needed.
  • Many programming languages are supported, it provides a sandbox environment for the user to develop in whichever style they prefer.
  • SAP is very actively developing and improving it.

SAS/Access

  • Secure connections to databases
  • Managed access to databases and data
  • Customized access to databases

Cons

SAP Data Intelligence

  • Better documentation with examples of how to use connectors (i.e. what input/output must look like)
  • Debugging functionality required to understand where pipelines fail and how data looks at that point
  • SAP libraries (e.g. python hana_ml) should be STANDARD and pre-installed to avoid dockerfiles and other workarounds
  • Dockerfile execution takes long times without giving a status where it is failing/held up
  • HANA Read/Write Table operator throws TLS errors which are unlikely when HANA connection generally works

SAS/Access

  • Syntax for the connection string can be tricky
  • Specification of the data source driver can be tricky

- Difficult debugging, sometimes it does not show where an error occurred so the error finding is difficult- Lot of tabs get opened when working with the tool which is not very user friendly- Pipelines and notebooks were sometimes deleted and could not be restored- Frequently used libraries (such as hana_ml) could not be installed via the dockerfile and should potentially be pre-installed for better usability

Initially we struggle to get help from SAP but then dedicated Dev angel was assigned to us and that simplify the overall support scenario. There is still room of improvement in documentation around SAP Data intelligence. We struggle a lot to initially understand the feature and required help around performance improvement area,

I have always received excelled service working with SAS technical support. Additionally, the tool is used so widely that there are many online resources and use cases that allow you to see many other uses or support routes.

Alternatives Considered

SAP Data Intelligence

SAP Data Intelligence was one of the first corporate complete data science solutions to hit the market. We picked this because of our excellent relationship with SAP and our current SAP product environment.

SAS/Access

Datastage might be the closest one. Being a full ETL tool, it's weird to compare both. Datastage might be more robust for extraction but it lacks the simplicity that the end users need for everyday data extract and analysis.

Return on Investment

SAP Data Intelligence

  • Managing Ai and Machine learning integrated technology is so useful for managing data.
  • Infrastructure costs because of serverless and cloud based platforms are reduced and everything is working charming with SAP data intelligence platform.
  • Connecting to all data sources and it automatically indexes all data assets.
Ali Kazempour | TrustRadius Reviewer

SAS/Access

  • Bring usable data together quickly for downstream consumption e.g. modelling and reporting.
