Pros
Informatica
  • The matching algorithms in IDQ are very powerful if you understand the different types that they offer (e.g., Hamming Distance, Jaro, Bigram, etc..). We had to play around with it to see which best suit our own needs of identifying and eliminating duplicate customers. Setting up the whole process (e.g., creating the KeyGenerator Transformation, setting up the matching threshold, etc..) can be somewhat time consuming and a challenge if you don't first standardize your data.
  • The integration with PowerCenter is great if you have both. You can either import your mappings directly to PowerCenter or to an XML file. The only downside is that some of the transformations are unique to IDQ, so you are not really able to edit them once in PowerCenter.
  • The standardizer transformation was key in helping us standardize our customer data (e.g., names, addresses, etc..). It was helpful due to having create a reference table containing the standardized value and the associated unstandardized values. What was great was that if you used Informatica Analyst, a business analyst could login and correct any of the values.

  • I like being able to create our own tables that aren't specified by the application; arranging data utilizing data spaces is a dream come true.
  • Using semantic data space instances with workflows improves performance significantly; firms with several domains may use the same application with numerous data spaces for master data management.
  • SAP (MDG) remains unique in the flexibility to model and manage master data the way it is used in the company, with all capabilities easily available through an intuitive user interface, and is not bound by the vendor's mandated data models.

Cons
Informatica
  • Several partnerships diminishing the value of technologies
  • Unable to get list of objects from Repository (like sources & targets) that don't have any dependency
  • Scheduling: The built-in scheduling tool has many constraints such as handling Unix/VB scripts etc. Most enterprises use third party tools for this.

SAP
  • As with all powerful and complex information platforms, SAP MDG does have a learning curve to it, especially if you plan on doing advanced things such as implementing MDM automation.
  • SAP MDG is capable of replicating data across many platforms (including non-SAP) however, this too, has a learning curve to it and will require some work. Bottom line...it doesn't just happen out of the box!
  • SAP MDG's flexibility can also be a weakness as sometimes you just want to implement a standard governance flow without defining everything from scratch. We have found that usually, you will need to define each workflow yourself in order for it to work properly.

As pointed out earlier, due all the robust features IDQ has, our use f the product is successful and stable. IDQ is being used in multiple sources (from CRM application and in batch mode). As this is an iterative process, we are looking to improve our system efficiency using IDQ.

MDG has proven to work and to bring results once implemented with the right approach, right engagement and sponsorship. Given that it is a very good tool to govern and control master data. Mainly if your company runs SAP systems which there will be a very straight forward integration, not needing any additional middleware or technologies.

SAP Master Data Governance(MDG) provides ease of use for the end users i.e. master data experts. It provides a good UI that is not SAP GUI. SAP provides support for any standard issues that we face. Their new set of Fiori tools helps us get more bang for our buck.

I haven't been using the support services individually. Instead, there are responsible units within the institution who train and support the users of the software in the institution. The service provided by these units are quite adequate and they probably get the service from SAP itself. That's why, I can assume that the support services are quite successful.
