Scale Computing HC3

I think in a smaller environment, Scale provides a great way to get into a virtualized environment. The setup is very simple and it doesn't require significant knowledge of IT infrastructure in order to get up and running. Scale doesn't offer the advanced insight into storage and application resource groups as their competitors do, however it is not designed for advanced users. It is more of a closed box and support handles most requests or issues quickly, but there is not a way for administrators to easily see advanced details of the cluster.

vSphere

Good for an on-premise environment where you need control over your hardware and workloads. vSphere is suited for businesses of all sizes that require high-density workloads and want to minimize physical footprint if they can afford the cost of entry (licenses needed). Beware not to over-buy licensing needs for what is needed but when purchasing licensing, also be aware of what will be needed in 18-24 months in the future to size correctly.

vSphere

  • Makes your server hardware independent, so you no longer need to worry about hardware failure and where to find specific replacement parts.
  • Reallocation of server resources quickly and on the fly, so if your server is slowing down, you can beef it up with a few clicks of the mouse.
  • Server recovery, when there is a problem, you can restore a backed up entire virtual server to the recovered host or a new host quickly and easily.

Cons

Scale Computing HC3

  • As with everything, I wish the price was a bit cheaper but by comparison to others but it's not bad when compared to similar solutions.
  • Not that it was needed in my case but the option to have a Scale engineer on site for setup might be nice for some instances.
  • The scheduling of the setup calls and training could be explained a little better and even possibly a quick overview of how to use the scheduling portion of the customer portal.

vSphere

  • The Web client is annoying - Ever since they deprecated the C# client, the web client has been a pain to use. The newest HTML5 client seems to finally be addressing this concern, but I still want the fat client back. Nothing was more reliable.
  • SDN should be included in pricing - VMware could lead the world into a software-defined network revolution, but for now, it costs so much, that only the most mature IT environments and larger companies can afford to pay to play that game.

Likelihood to Renew

Since I have had no issues with downtime; easier management of my cluster and the ability to lower the number of devices in my Infrastructure, I will gladly renew my support contract with Scale Computing HC3 and upgrade my equipment with them when it comes time for it.

We are constantly looking for change that will benefit our company. We are not ones to stick with a product simply because it is what we know, but rather looking for what fits us best. We can't imagine another product on the market today doing a better job of handling our infrastructure than vSphere.

I was able to learn how to manage this system in minutes. I can go weeks without touching it and never have a problem. If something comes up like an update, I simply get an email notifying me to login and update my Cluster OS.

Support

We had a lot of interaction with Scale support when we were getting started. Since then, we have only had a few (mostly routine) support issues. Every time, no matter which tech we speak to, we always feel like we are Scale's most important customer. The help we receive is excellent and well-informed. We never get the sense that someone is guessing, and most of the time we receive additional help or insight that increases our knowledge of, and appreciation for, the product. The people at Scale love their product.

We pay for the enterprise support and we had to use it a few times. I have great techs on my team but we had to call support. Support was very helpful and helped us recover VMs that we lost due to some hardware problem. The reason I don't give a 10 is because of the way you have to pay. There are too many levels of support and they should just have one.

Purchasing the migration service or tool if one has older systems, a large number of servers, or coming from another VM solution would be a great advantage.

Just make sure that when you implement, that the person implementing truly knows what they are doing and has a plan of action coming in. Since our initial implementation using a consulting service, I have implemented a few vSphere just from what I learned at the initial implementation and use over time, and the person implementing really needs to know what they are doing or you will miss out on features that may help you down the line

Alternatives Considered

Scale Computing HC3

We chose Scale primarily because it was a completely self contained system. That meant one vendor and one support contract. Researching the different hardware components required for a vm system and multiple vendors of each component quickly got old. And thinking ahead toward maintaining such a system we did not want to deal with the headache of tracking down which component was causing us trouble and then having to prove that to the vendors.

vSphere

vSphere does not have any competition, Hyper-V is light years behind! VMWare has always been about innovation and great features. My company has relied on them for over 10 years now, always been satisfied. The only bad thing they have going for them is their price, apart from that they are untouchable. I would strongly suggest anyone looking at virtual solutions to immediately look into vSphere, do not waste your time checking out Hyper-V or other solutions, they just don't have all the features and capabilities Vsphere has.

Return on Investment

Scale Computing HC3

  • The platform saved us 40% at deployment vs. traditional alternative and was a substantially smaller investment that alternative hyper-convergence solutions with similar performance specifications.
  • We have been able to reduce head-count by one with the HC3 platform in place.
  • We have been able to eliminate the annual licensing cost associated with VMware which added to the ROI of HC3.
Marshall Curtis profile photo

vSphere

  • We've had a positive ROI since deploying vSphere in our environment. We were able to minimize the number of physical servers we had running by combining some servers and their apps into one virtual machine. We also experience less downtime since vSphere is equipped with a failover feature that will allow another virtual machine to take over if we have problems with one system. The reporting feature allows us to stay on top of application performance, system errors, and other necessary tasks that keep our environment running smoothly.
  • The only negative impact we've had is in the finance category. Buying and maintaining licenses and maintenance agreements is very expensive.
