This appliance is well suited for organizations that have a need to monitor, moderate, or log social networking site use or the use of any website. It is a very solid tool for any information security department to have at their disposal.

How customizeable do you need your software to be? If you have very specific needs, NetBase is great. If you prefer a "plug and play" approach, it may not be for you. Because it's so customizeable, it's not as easy to use - you need to tinker with each page.

Pros

  • Filtering capabilities for both URL and Social Media were easy to implement and manage by the security team. These features allow you to grant or deny access to various user groups as needed all the way to an individual grant or deny. It offers a vary large robust list of configuration options.
  • If you have a need for storing and later discovering Instant Messaging conversations or even messaging in social media then this is the tool to deploy. At that time when we chose this product, none of the other products were capable of meeting the feature set that Actiance offered.
  • Ease of deployment. Its abilities for integration with LDAP and Active directory give a wide set of deployment options.

  • Keyword identification. The NLP is very good at pulling out keywords that are relevant to the ones already applied. This is important as it allows the user to easily tune the topic.
  • Usability. Once the user is familiar with the product, the dashboard is easily navigable and the analyst can quickly move from section to section.
  • Although this is a touchy subject among social analysts, I believe that the NetBase NLP is one of the best sentiment analysis systems available at the moment. While no tool will be completely accurate, against our hand coded tests, the NetBase NLP has shown a very low margin of error.

Cons

  • Its configuration options were very large and required a good deal of time to learn all of the various settings.

  • Lacks Facebook data pull. Overall online conversation metrics are not accurate if Facebook data is not being included.
  • Dashboards can be confusing and hard to set up because they are not particularly necessary or relevant.
  • Topics take a lot of trial and error to see if the information being pulled in is exactly what you are looking for. Using filters temporarily solves the problem, but is not a permanent solution.

Its not often that you come across a platform that is as easy to deploy as this one was. Once deployed it is an easy configure and forget appliance, but then you wouldn't get to benefit from its many other available features.

NetBase constantly updates the platform with features. The platforms ability to analyze complex social listening topics is exceptional. Its fast and gives you the ability to create standardized reports for a quick topic analysis. Additionally, the standard overview tab provides the topic at a glance and assists in quickly identifying areas to further analyze. Great product with excellent support behind it!

Account managers and analyst support are all very responsive, helpful, knowledgeable and friendly. When the first line of support can't immediately resolve a problem, they manage expectations and effectively communicate what is being done and estimated timelines.

We had an internal implementation meeting with the NetBase team as well as a business seat implementation for one of our clients. I would highly recommend having all stakeholders attend an implementation meeting as they can understand the power of this platform.

Alternatives Considered

This was the only appliance of its kind that I have used. Other devices have different capabilities for web filtering such as the checkpoint firewalls, but none of them offered the overall solution that was deployed with this product at that time.

At a previous agency we used Sysomos Heartbeat and MAP, but switched to NetBase because Sysomos has pretty mediocre source coverage and a very high presence of spam. I've done extensive comparisons of all the leading social listening tools and the only ones that come close are Crimson Hexagon and Brandwatch. Brandwatch is better suited for brands or single clients. I almost picked Crimson, but when it comes down to TIME, you can probably do 5 reports in the time it takes to build one opinion monitor
