SolarWinds had the big breach just as we left it. We loved how powerful it was, and how customizable - however, it is an ON-Prem tool, and as a growing MSP, that dynamic didn't and couldn't scale. We then moved to Auvik, which had the cleanest GUI and some neat features. That …
Chose LogicMonitor
After switching from Solarwinds to LogicMonitor we would never go back. The higher price for LogicMonitor is well worth all the areas that this platform excels when compared to Solarwinds. The support is great, they are available directly through the web portal in a chat and I …

Solarwinds was a good tool when we were having a small amount of network devices, but once we reached to a large number of network devices, Solarwind started giving issues as it stopped respnding sometime, slowness in navigation, DB need fixes sometime etc. While the same data …
Chose LogicMonitor
LogicMonitor has simplified many of the menus and context compared to their competitors. Being cloud based, it is also very lean on local infrastructure.
Chose LogicMonitor
This is not an exhaustive list of all products we have previously evaluated. All of these likely have specific use-cases where they would be appropriate choices. In our evaluations, we've felt that LogicMonitor best fit the requirements of our use-case/s than the competition.
Chose LogicMonitor
Their ability to integrate with the device vendors we use in our environment was a key separator.
Chose LogicMonitor
LogicMonitor's licensing is per device instead of SolarWinds per interface. This means a switch only needs one license compared to SolarWinds licensing per port on the switch. SolarWind's GUI is old and not very intuitive to new users. Setting up users in LogicMonitor is super …
Chose LogicMonitor
LogicMonitor is a much better platform than both of these. We do not have to maintenance internal infrastructure for our monitoring platform with LogicMonitor.

LogicMonitor offers an excellent alternative to Solarwinds, and in most ways, I prefer LogicMonitor.
Chose LogicMonitor
LogicMonitor was the fastest to deploy and is the easiest to understand and manage of any of the previous platforms that I've used for monitoring, in part because it is cloud-based. It also does a good job at managing a wide range of devices. For our organization that has …

The warnings are incredibly detailed. I think it would be incredibly helpful to have a record of what happens when an outage starts and when the status changes. Also the average customer who isn't overly concerned about the data's storage location will love LogicMonitor, but security-conscious clients may find it harder to adopt due to data not held locally.

Solarwinds NPM is well suited for medium to large networks, it may be a bit heavy for the SOHO environment as most of the tools and reports are designed for monitoring KPIs which may not be critical for a small shop. NPM can handle large networks with several sites and mixed technologies ranging from networks, server systems, storage devices and SLA reporting.

Pros
LogicMonitor
  • LogicMonitor is very customizable. We can build whatever modules we need, because it uses standard protocols like HTTPS, SNMP and WMI to gather data and metrics.
  • We like that LogicMonitor is an agentless solution for our use case. Not all customers will allow an agent-based approach to 3rd party tools.
  • LogicMonitor has thousands of out of the box modules, which work on their own and also act as good baselines for the ones that we will end up customizing more. We are rarely starting at zero when we decide to do something new with LogicMonitor.
  • LogicMonitor has great documentation, and support has been helpful in the instances where we've needed them.

Cons
LogicMonitor
  • Because of the rapid change in technology, maintaining DataSources to the most current level can be time-consuming for staff.
  • The network discovery and mapping capabilities are not as robust when compared to other solutions
  • While it can back-up configuration files on devices, it does not have the ability to push or modify configuration files back to devices.

  • The software upgrade process is a little hairy and has caused me trouble on occasion.
  • The server that it needs to run is a bit of a resource hog along with the SQL server.
  • Some additional features like the network map are a bit clunky compared to some other products that we use.

This product has met virtually all of our needs. It was easy to implement and has been simple to support. Customization has been intuitive with many options available. They keep adding features and expanding available options. The future of LogicMonitor looks even better than it is today which is very promising. The entire IT staff relies on NPM in its daily operations. It would be impossible for us to maintain our level of service without it. If SolarWinds gets to proud of their product and begins to over charge for it, we would be forced to reconsider and use a different product. But as it stands it is worth the price to renew it.

Usability
LogicMonitor
Set up is super easy. Just stand up a small Linux or Windows server to act as a collector. There are no agents to install on monitored devices and all you need is SNMP or WMI access. When creating dashboards, all you have to do is find the widget on the device you want to show up and choose the menu option to add it.

SolarWinds Network Performance Monitor (NPM) is quite an extensive product, covering all our bases and requirements. There are a lot of customizable options and features which you can work with for their alerting which is really useful. I haven't found anything yet which I thought SolarWinds Network Performance Monitor (NPM) could do, but it actually couldn't so overall it works nicely and does the job.

Support Rating
LogicMonitor
The sales team support we received was top notch. They worked hand in hand to make sure the product met all expectations. So far we have not really had to work with support that much; we have worked with setup team after purchase to deploy product fully. No issues so far and we are four weeks in.

In all of the times that we called support, someone at SolarWinds had the answer for us in a timely manner. Through thwack and other internet searching, we have been able to resolve all of our issues that arose to our satisfaction. The support staff have always been knowledgeable of their products or had a fellow support staff member to rely on to get the needed answers.

The training is good but during the implementation, you can get situations not learned during the training. The trainer was very open to hearing the questions about use cases and always sharing his experience. I really recommend having official training to take advantage of all features that the NPM can bring.

We found the LogicMonitor documentation and online guides to be up to date and easy to follow. During our pre-sale proof of concept phase, we learned the basics of creating import CSV files and had the bulk of our devices added the first day. After the purchase, we used the professional services to get training on the entire system and help customizing everything to meet our needs. We also made use of the available certification online training courses for our power users to get them comfortable with the system.

Make sure your inventory is accurate. Stand up some virtual machines for testing prior to installation. Make sure your database and its credentials are setup. Think about things you want to monitor that may not be obvious - UPS units, Door hardware, PBX systems, Fabric Channel switches, firewalls, routers, switches. Try to setup SNMP on these devices and have an IP that you will assign to the new server. If you do that it will go well.

Alternatives Considered
LogicMonitor
During the evaluation process we looked a number of other solutions, a detailed technically analysis was carried out to map functionlity, deployment and scalabilty across the solutions. The primary areas that LogicMonitor succeeded are around the simplicity of deployment, scalability and to a lesser extent cost. Of the alternative products, Datadog is a better solution if your focus is on APM. However it will be harder to manage in a scaling MSP environment.

  • SolarWinds allows us to proactively address hardware issues before they impact the business. We recently had a server that was experiencing issues sporadically and we were able to use the data from SolarWinds to track down and correct the issue before it tanked the server.
  • SolarWinds gives our IT department some piece of mind knowing that they'll be alerted of any issues real time.
  • We can use SolarWinds data to justify needed to replace or upgrade certain equipment that is key to our core business.
