New Relic and Splunk Enterprise both provide businesses with insights into what events are occurring in their applications. New Relic is an application monitoring tool designed to monitor user behavior in web based, mobile, or desktop applications. Splunk Enterprise is a Security Information and Event Management tool that manages data and provides businesses with event logs and alerts. Notably, many businesses use both New Relic and Splunk Enterprise, and they have native integrations with each other. New Relic can take in data from applications and feed it to Splunk Enterprise to generate reports, alerts, and logs.

Features and Limitations

Though New Relic and Splunk Enterprise both have features for generating insights about application data, they have some features and limitations that are important to consider.

New Relic is focused on application monitoring. New Relic provides detailed information about user behavior in applications, allowing businesses to see how applications are performing and if they have any issues. New Relic offers some analytics features out of the box, and also contains integrations with many other tools for even more detailed analytics. Despite its powerful application monitoring features, New Relic does have some downsides, such as its complex interface that presents a learning curve for new users.

Splunk Enterprise provides alerts and event logs for businesses so they can see what people are interacting with their site or applications and how they are interacting with them. Splunk Enterprise can handle almost all data types and offers flexible filtering so users can view their data and logs however they prefer. Splunk Enterprise also provides tools for users to parse through their logs to find the events they are looking for.

For businesses looking solely for application monitoring features, New Relic is an ideal tool, while Splunk Enterprise is great for businesses trying to parse application and IT data. For businesses that need to do both, Splunk Enterprise and New Relic can be integrated to work together.

Pricing

New Relic offers an essentials pricing package for $12.50 per month that retains application data for a few days. The pro package, which costs $25.00 per month retains application data for three months.

Splunk offers a free version for single users, but most businesses will need the Splunk Enterprise package, which includes unlimited users and Splunk Enterprises full monitoring and logging features for $1800.00 per year/

New - relic is well suited if you want to analyse the performance of your services and you want to improve it. Integration with multiple services with same account gives a clear picture of flow of your APIs if you have micro-service architecture. New-relic is less appropriate when you want to do logging of your system. As it does not emits every single calls

Splunk
Pros: Splunk is very well suited if you have multiple log sources of related data. All of them can be correlated and tasks can be automated based on the requirement. Other than alerts, Splunk can also run a specific script of your choice, based on some defined conditions. Cons: If you have a few logs but a large number of log sources, Splunk can be very expensive.

Pros
New Relic
  • gives us an monitoring of all our underlying servers and also we can configure some alerts upon them like CPU and memory alerts.
  • Kubernetes cluster monitoring with new relic for EKS gives us and minute details of our cluster utilisation like node usage, pods memory request and limits
  • Network traceability for each and every request with response time analysis is great we can trace which component is responsible for generating response delay
  • log managements of the logs the infrastructure is generating we can view logs through there only

  • Real-time + Scheduled alerts - i-e you can set up alerts which are actively monitoring your logs
  • Pretty good response time for search results. With our key/value logging, Splunk makes it blazing fast to query the data.
  • Dashboards provide insights into historical data
  • Love how Splunk indexes all of the data and provides keys to search on

Cons
New Relic
  • I would like to see sort of simulator inside the user interface, that way we can send requests directly from it to test some configuration instead of setting up a test environment in our end.
  • It would be nice if the data ingestion can be filtered by APM's. That way we can know which application is ingested most data.
  • It would be nice if we could ingest logs (apache, system logs, and other logs) and correlate them with the APM.

  • At times some queries can run slowly if indices are not on a portion of the query you use.
  • Setup time initially can be difficult if your logs aren't stored in common locations or in a common way to write the log.
  • Ability to ingest logs from different locations without having to change code to put logs in a certain place (pro and con).
  • Searches can be a bit more difficult to look through if your log isn't pulled in a manner that is easy to read through splunk.

New Relic
The only issue that we have had with New Relic is that the price might be a little expensive for smaller companies. The amount of data you store in New Relic impacts the cost, and can get away from you if you don't work closely with the vendor. Overall though the application is top notch.

Splunk
We are using Splunk extensively in our projects and we have recently upgraded to Splunk version 6.0 which is quite efficient and giving expected results. We keep track of updates and new features Splunk introduces periodically and try to introduce those features in our day to day activities for improvement in our reporting system and other tasks.

Usability
New Relic
As an engineer, New Relic has been very quick and easy for me to pick up/install/use. It has been less easy for some of the less technical-minded folks in our organization and their UI still is inconsistent multiple years after refactoring their platform to be New Relic One.

You can literally throw in a single word into Splunk and it will pull back all instances of that word across all of your logs for the time span you select (provided you have permission to see that data). We have several users who have taken a few of the free courses from Splunk that are able to pull data out of it everyday with little help at all.

Support Rating
New Relic
There are times I feel that the initial support is lacking. And in some cases the automated responses of not hearing anything are annoying if the reason why there has been no movement is because we are still waiting to hear back from NR support. So, i think they should loose the automation as it can seem disingenuous

Splunk maintains a well resourced support system that has been consistent since we purchased the product. They help out in a timely manner and provide expert level information as needed. We typically open cases online and communicate when possible via e-mail and are able to resolve most issues with that method.

Splunk
The online course was simple clear and described the main capabilities of the solution. There is also an initial module that can be done for free so anyone can familiarize themselves with the functionality of this solution. On the other hand, however, there could be more free online courses. Maybe even with a certificate, this would broaden the group of people who are familiar with the platform while increasing familiarity with the solution itself.

Implementation Rating
New Relic
It's better to start by implementing New Relic in one project and test everything. Try to follow best recommended practices and read all the official documentation. Everything seems well tested. Then, start by installing agents to the rest of your projects and keep a close look to all logs and metrics New Relic gives you.

Alternatives Considered
New Relic
New Relic is the most full-featured offering that we've found, and is incredibly easy to start using with a PHP app. The New Relic agent is installed as a PHP extension so it is able to monitor and track the performance of any PHP app being run by the web server. Other tools required the installation and setup of a PHP dependency at the application level.

I wanted to learn a new language that I can quickly master and implement. Splunk is easy, fun to use and best of all, it can be developed in hours not days or weeks. Splunk is fundamentally a programming language that is minimal but yet powerful enough to collect, analyze and visualize data.

  • We know of issues before our customers
  • One common tool for logs, apm, infrastructure, and most alerting. Makes for easier developer experience.
  • Cost is expensive and is one of highest engineering spends

  • Overall very positive. It has provided visibility to what is going on within our network.
  • One drawback is the time it takes to get up to speed with the application, but this is up to the user, and Splunk education is excellent.
  • In my field, IT Security, there are few other friends to have in your back pocket better than Splunk. They are just that good.
