Likelihood to Recommend

Cisco StealthWatch

I think a larger company that needs NetFlow data and has someone who can dedicate some time into learning the inner workings of StealthWatch could take advantage of all that StealWatch has to offer, but the suite itself may be too much to swallow for smaller staffed companies or companies that don't need this kind of visibility into network traffic.

Varonis Data Security Platform

Data Governance is well suited to areas where there is a requirement to control user access and privileges to unorganised data, if an organisation is taking on the challenge of a data classification project then this is a great tool for finding out what data is out in the organisation. Some additional modules allow information owners and approvers to authorise user access through a web portal cutting down on a manual process and lets profile administration be auditable.

Pros

Cisco StealthWatch

  • Stellar at grabbing Netflow data - and really, really good at differentiating types of traffic.
  • Excellent at knowing which traffic was flowing from what endpoints - and then using some tie-ins to gather data about the endpoints.
  • Used this mostly for historic (what happened when) but also used it a few times for real-time analysis, looking for bandwidth hogs and help for troubleshooting issues.
  • Highly recommend as a forensic tool - doesn't do full packet capture, but for everything else it's awesome.

Varonis Data Security Platform

  • Searching for account permissions is much easier and granular with Varonis over normal AD users and computers
  • Having alerting when group policies are changed has been a big security group win
  • Identifying sensitive data such as PII and SOX data has also been a major win for our Organization

Cons

Cisco StealthWatch

  • The StealthWatch interface is clunky and broken into 2 parts, both an HTML console and a JAVA console. This causes issues as one is completely different than the other.
  • Licenses are eaten up very quickly and can be pricey.
  • Upgrading StealthWatch is more tedious and time consuming than it should be.

Varonis Data Security Platform

  • The web interface is somewhat limited in terms of functionality
  • More licenses are required for additional features. This increases the cost to implement.
  • Customized reporting is lacking.

I wish the cost was a little bit lower and increase functionality and features would give it 10/10.

I dealt with support few times and each case was handled properly and escalated to the right person in a timely fashion.

Alternatives Considered

Cisco StealthWatch

NTOP is the only thing out there, in my opinion, that provides similar type of visibility. But StealthWatch is the product all vendors should strive to emulate. It is easy to install; it is easy to configure; it works as advertised (and then some). I do recommend the three-day work shop they occasionally run - or some onsite training. The product is feature rich and the training will help you get the most out of it.

Varonis Data Security Platform

At the time of our purchase Stealth Bits did not have the same functionality that we initially wanted, so Varonis was the better option and across the available modules again Varonis could cover more future use areas. As of now Stealth Bits has really caught up and as they do not operate an agent logic of data capture can be a lot easier and quicker to install.
