Stripe

If you are building a custom web, mobile, or e-commerce application, Stripe is the most flexible, easiest to implement, and feature-rich platform available today. Other payment processors have poor APIs, poor documentation, and poor support in comparison. We've worked with a number of more legacy payment gateway and merchant account setups in the past, and the hassles and hurdles slow down product development. Stripe's support is extremely fast and knowledgeable. We can ask Stripe's live chat a complex software implementation question and have an answer from a real knowledgeable person in minutes. Getting a helpful answer at all from some other payment services we have worked with can be a challenge in comparison

Workplace from Facebook

I think Workplace by Facebook is a great communication vehicle for any mid-sized to large company. (Since it's more groups-oriented than "regular" Facebook, it might not work well for smaller companies.) I also don't have any idea what the cost is for having it, but that also be a reason that it wouldn't be worth the expense for smaller companies. For larger companies, I think it's a terrific way for folks to communicate with one another and for "the powers that be" to communicate with employees. Facebook Live is only suitable when you have a limited number of people who need to be on screen and it wouldn't really be suitable as a vehicle for instructor-led online training -- it's really most suitable for presentations (although, via the comments area, does allow for questions to be asked in writing)

Pros

Stripe

  • Documentation: Stripe is extensively well-documented, with thorough docs on both the high-level components of their system, as well as best-in-class API documentation.
  • Customer Support: Stripe has great, responsible customer support. Their front-line CS is remarkably willing to dig into an issue and look for out-of-the-box solutions when a specific feature or use-case isn't quite supported.
  • Reliability: Stripe has given us every reason to trust their platform, which has been extremely stable and robust in the years we've been using it.

Workplace from Facebook

  • It provides a user interface that is familiar and proven to assist in engaging people to use the platform. The layout is clean and minimal and pleasing and that helps staff become comfortable with interacting with one another.
  • Group insights are a fantastic feature that allows you to see how a certain topic, discussion or file is performing with the staff or audience. If you are seeking feedback on a particular memo, for instance, the insights will catalog who has viewed, how many comments, questions or interactions, etc. It helps to see in real-time, the things staff or clients are excited about and then the items where no one comments.
  • Cataloging of historical information is a real benefit. The dashboard has a notes section where I will keep a lot of private and or personal reflections that I can reference at a later time. I may jot a few notes about a project so I can recall them at a later point. Many programs do this, but again, this is all within the same house and for time and memory sake, this really works well.
  • Segmenting is very easy to do. We have set up Groups for various projects, teams, clients or cohorts. You can segment as much as you want and one person may be in more than one group but maybe not all groups. Basic segmenting that works well. Notifications are sent when new posts or news is released.
  • The platform is not the same portal as Facebook so there is no chance that posts get put on the wrong timeline. With this said, what I like most is the ease of onboarding and no one has had any trouble getting up and going on Workplace. It is like Facebook, easy and something most if not all will have familiarity in navigation.

Cons

Stripe

  • The UI is easy to navigate and understand, however if the homepage or dashboard was simplified it could make Stripe an even better solution than it is.
  • Unlike some of it's competitors, it comes with no hardware to process transactions. Currently this is not an issue for the way we do business or run credit card transactions but as we grow and expand we may have a need for mobile-based hardware devices in the future.
  • Although it's a competitive product, we'd welcome lower fees and quicker balance transfers to our main banking account from Stripe.

Workplace from Facebook

  • There's a slight concern over the privacy and security of company and employee information. This concern is increasing with each revelation about Facebook's use of data.
  • I am not a fan of the Messenger and Workplace App being separate; just like with regular Facebook. I wish they were combined in the same app.
  • Although overall I do find Workplace by Facebook productive, occasionally I find myself losing time by scrolling and clicking too much on company gossip and news.

Having to download multiple apps just to use the tool is very cumbersome. Facebook would have make this better by wrapping it in as a main feature within their app, but having to use multiple apps to see discussions and walls is so frustrating.

I have not had to utilize the customer support feature, which is why I gave it a ten! I feel like the better the software is, the less you have to use customer support, which is much easier on the user! Love the user-friendliness of Stripe. I would definitely recommend it!

Workplace by Facebook is an excellent fit in respect of support and documentation. It has excellent tutorials and documentation, as well. The UI and UX are already great as it is developed and maintained by Facebook, so most of the times, there is no need for any support or documentation.

Alternatives Considered

Stripe

We use Square for point of sale payments but we only use that occasionally if we are at an expo or similar. I have also used a credit card service from our bank but it was several years ago and it was technologically slow and expensive. Stripe is easier to use and reasonably priced for transactions.

Workplace from Facebook

Workplace offers more features with less of a learning curve than other options, which has helped adoption and usefulness. It is built for communication, which it excels at, but it is not built to address all business needs and other project management, document review, and communication tools are still needed

Return on Investment

Stripe

  • Stripe has allowed us to effortlessly collect monthly fees from our clients. After spending time to get things setup, we now don't need to spend additional time each month processing payments. So in that sense Stripe has had a positive affect in free up our time.

Workplace from Facebook

  • We can meet the project times, that with the communication in real time.
  • We provide solutions to our suppliers in a reliable and efficient manner.
  • When a business can save time and at the same time respond to the demands of customers, this translates into greater market capture of action for the company.
