SuccessFactors Talent Solutions

SuccessFactors is a platform that can grow with you. Generally speaking HR software that is targeted to under 500 people lacks a host of important features that are needed in business; workflows for approvals being the main one. SF has this as a core feature which is critical when looking at scale. SF can handle more complex organizations that include matrix, division, acquisition, etc., but keep in mind all of these foundation objects require a good amount of time and configuration to work properly. Mid-size to larger companies, as a result, are better suited for this platform. If you look at the modules as stand alones, then PM is great for implementing a flexible goals and performance product; something that is suitable for a variety of organizations regardless of their stage of development. In terms of selection, be very clear about your strategy and what you want to achieve especially if you have an existing system you are looking to replace or one that you want to integrate with. When you construct a Statement of Work (SOW) of requirements start with the ideal state and work back into the capabilities. Easier if you have nothing in place and start with SuccessFactors but more complex when other system and process dependencies are involved.

Pros

  • Base Compensation Module runs smoothly and is efficient.
  • The Platinum Support Reps are invaluable. Expensive but worth every penny. They work with you on a daily basis to support your individual company needs and keep you abreast of the updates and changes that will help you use SF to its fullest potential.
  • It is a powerful suite of modules that has the potential to provide an integrated soup to nuts HR solution.

Cons

  • We have received directions from Customer Success at SuccessFactors that drove workflow expectations of performance reviews and hierarchy changes that were not accurate.
  • SuccessFactors Customer Success needs to more thoroughly and accurately test functionality before providing to customers. When questions or problems have arisen, Customer Success has expected the customer to test solutions internally instead of Customer Success diagnosing and testing their system internally providing recommended solutions to their customers.
  • Reporting in SuccessFactors needs significant development and improvement. The standard reports only work if your configuration matches some pre-determined configuration that ties to the standard reports. We were not informed about the configuration requirements to support standard reporting, so we had to use an external report developer at added expense to get what we needed. SuccessFactors recommended and charged us for an open-source reporting tool called BIRT that requires an extremely high level of technical knowledge to use.

Our company has invested a significant amount of time and capital in the configuration, implementation, communication and on-going maintenance of our set of SuccessFactors modules. The system is a good investment for the value it brings to a company of our size in terms of functionality and user friendliness. There is a lot of untapped potential that our company could realize and increase the ROI. Ironically, in order to realize the untapped potential of the system, we would need to work with external consultants, not SuccessFactors themselves, to identify such opportunities and solutions

The goals module could be a little more straightforward in terms of aligning and linking goals. The employee central is relatively new, so it's been a little buggy and we've had to use workarounds. However, overall I am very satisfied.

Reliability and Availability

If you had asked me before the summer, I would have rated them 10/10 for up time. I am not sure if it was due to the SAP acquisition or not, but we had quite a few significant issues over the summer. Their servers have been bombarded. I know they are setting up new data centers, so some of these issues are supposed to go away. We have had more downtime than I think is acceptable, especially based on past performance.

We had some slow downs in last 6 months because of the server issues. They were experiencing load balancing issues. In previous years we have not had problems. We do batch our appraisals into one time at the end of our fiscal year which is June.

I would rate the support for Employee Central much higher - 9/10. It is a new product and they want people to be successful. For other modules, tech support is abysmal. They made some changes over the summer and last fall and it was really challenging. Their people did not understand the product and they would take an eternity to get back to you. They would make changes that effected other areas of product and they were not aware of it

Implementation

In reference to the implementation of Employee Central, the consultants were less familiar with certain aspects of product as it's new. I would have liked them to have better handle on all aspects of product as there were some things we had to go back and change. They were however helpful and open to discussion all the time. They were very accessible to us.

Return on Investment

  • Positive return on investment would be how many corproate employees are able to use the system collectively and make changes that are trackable.
  • Pricey but for a large organization, I would recommend highly!
