Tableau Server

It is well suited in an industry rich with data flow and more room for public information. The reason behind the public information use case is that can Tableau can be made visualize value, and in return adds value to proof of concepts or detailed plan. Tableau Server is economical, and many organizations look for such products, as it is no harm to test and try such an enterprise tool.

Denodo

Denodo is a data virtualization software that works on real-time data. Choose it when you do not want to have a local storage or replication. 1. Do you need to mashup data from different datasources returning different types of data at real-time? Denodo works here.2. Do you need to do data aggregation and run reports on local data? Denodo may not be the best fit.3. Do you want a wrapper for your database and expose as webservices? Maybe Denodo can fit. However this is purely based on business needs.4. Do you want to use Denodo as a caching layer? Maybe Denodo is not suited for this. You have to look at specific caching solutions.5. Is time-to-market a key factor? Integrating two sources was a cakewalk with Denodo. It is a compromise of cost vs. time-to-market. 6. How frequently will you need to integrate another datasource or a new data set? One time integration may be best to achieve outside of Denodo or any data virtualization platform for that matter.

Pros

  • Allows for easy sharing of data and actionable insights with an extremely user-friendly visual interface
  • Acts as an environment to implement and enforce data governance with centralized and certified data sources
  • Easy to deploy, scale to our specific needs, and monitor
Shoaib Yari profile photo
  • Flat learning curve.
  • Does not need brilliant developers.
  • Less need for custom denodo wrappers, even if needed is not very complex.
  • Denodo stored procedures and functions helped address complex, not straightforward requirements.
  • Export/import deployment between environments was very helpful.

Cons

  • Tableau's mapping capabilities are "almost there". We would love to have Tableau able to function as our sole GIS product. Each version of Tableau brings us closer to that goal.
  • We would like to have the ability to schedule data transfers. The new Data Prep tool is step in that direction.
  • We still have need to produce lists of summarized data. Making this process a little more straightforward would be nice.

  • Caching - but I am sure it will be improved by now. There were times when we expected the cache to be refreshed but it was stale.
  • Schema generation of endpoints from API response was sometimes incomplete as not all API calls returned all the fields. Will be good to have an ability to load the schema itself (XSD/JSON/Soap XML etc).
  • Denodo exposed web services were in preliminary stage when we used; I'm sure it will be improved by now.
  • Export/Import deployment, while it was helpful, there were unexpected issues without any errors during deployment. Issues were only identified during testing. Some views were not created properly and did not work. If it was working in the environment from where it was exported from, it should work in the environment where it is imported.

We will continue our use of Tableau server due to the following factors:- Cost effectiveness. This persists from year-to-year. Tableau consistently gives us the best value for the cost- Reliability. Tableau server has been rock-solid for our users, particularly during emergencies.- Innovation. You can bet that Tableau will release stable new versions on a regular basis. We have often experienced the need for a function in Tableau that will be included in a future release.

When it works, it works great. The drag and drop functionality is seamless. Creating calculated fields is also simple

Reliability and Availability

Unlike the BIG BI vendor solutions, Tableau server specializes in delivering Dashboards to desktops, tablets and mobile devices via http. This masterful decision to specialize in a few things as opposed to being marginally viable at many things is a winning approach in my opinion. This approach has allowed Tableau to deliver it's server product in a shrink wrapped package that's a pleasure to manage.

Server can lag a little - problem can be addressed by moving to core-based licensing but it's a significant cost jump over user-based.

Support

Tableau Server9.1
Based on 12 answers
I think the folks that work in support are generally pretty good at what they do (when you get them on a WebEx). But the process of reporting issues to them and waiting for a response (via email only) is a hassle. I never understood why you can't just call them up and discuss the issues with them. It would take a handful of email exchanges before they would agree to a WebEx session. That was frustrating.

In-Person Training

Tableau Server8.0
Based on 4 answers
In our case, they hired a private third party consultant to train our dept. It was extremely boring and felt like it dragged on. Everything I learned was self taught so I was not really paying attention. But I do think that you can easily spend a week on the tool and go over every nook and cranny. We only had the consultant in for a day or two.

Online Training

The sales consultants do an amazing job of introducing the tool and its capabilities. They are also helpful in explaining the layout of the desktop client and its different functionality.Keep in mind that they use a sample data source (MS Excel) with a very small amount of data to show off what it can do. What you have to remember is that you are buying the tool so that you can connect to large amounts of data (and possibly blend data together from different databases).

Implementation

Tableau Server9.1
Based on 13 answers
My department was largely Excel and paper-based when I started, so there's been a tremendous amount of work to get the data into shape, so when I look at the overall implementation of our visualization and reporting infrastructure, I'm less satisfied. Tableau has been wonderful, the one place that would get me to a 10 is if it was easier to tune workbook performance on Tableau Server, there are a huge number of variables to deal with across the workbook/application/hardware stack. In a small environment like ours that takes more effort than I'd like.

Alternatives Considered

We find Tableau Server much more flexible and powerful for the developer. The resulting dashboard and interactive charts far surpass those of Business Objects. IBM Cognos is much too restrictive in its ability to present data visualizations in a way that is easily integrated into both web platforms and mobile applications.
Ken Sparks profile photo
I did not use any other data virtualization platform. BizTalk is not the right comparison; it is an integration layer and for orchestration; do not use denodo as an orchestration layer, it is not for connecting upstreams to downstreams and orchestrate data flows, it is primarily for pulling information and presenting in a fashion that benefit the audience

Data Integration

Tableau Server8.9
Based on 70 answers
It is extremely easy to feed Tableau from multiple data sources, even in the same report. This is actually one of the areas where this product shines; very easy to work with different data sources. You can use different data sources in different parts of an equation that feeds a report.

Return on Investment

  • Our clients are interested in the interactive dashboard on their data. This is a big ask and a good selling point for our future clients.
  • We are not able to get a self-service model yet as it takes a good amount of training for our users.
  • Tableau is definitely a good tool if you would like to build dashboards easily.
Kishore Ummadisetti profile photo
  • Improved time-to-market. We addressed new requirements in less than 2 person days.
  • Very agile. Easy to handle changing requirements. Like a new requirement, a change in requirement was not expensive either.
  • Platform issues were difficult to diagnose and debug.
