Tableau Server

It is well suited in an industry rich with data flow and more room for public information. The reason behind the public information use case is that can Tableau can be made visualize value, and in return adds value to proof of concepts or detailed plan. Tableau Server is economical, and many organizations look for such products, as it is no harm to test and try such an enterprise tool.

Tableau Online

Tableau is very well suited for large organizations because of its cost. It has a great visual design. It is particularly useful when there is data integration with other software required. Dashboards come out very well in such cases and help make sense out of data. These dashboards are used on a frequent basis once a baseline or a parameter is defined. Trend analysis and forecasting are a key to using this software and this is where it comes in very handy.

Tableau Server is very stable. But Tableau desktop has crashed (or become unresponsive) on a few instances.

Performance

Tableau Server8.1
Based on 8 answers
Due to it's skillful use of in-memory processing and columnar data structures ensures optimal performance. However, with larger data sets, especially with LIVE connections to back-end DBMS platforms, performance degrades quickly. However, with minimal planning and Tableau data extracts, exceptional performance is achievable.

In-Person Training

Tableau Server8.0
Based on 4 answers
In our case, they hired a private third party consultant to train our dept. It was extremely boring and felt like it dragged on. Everything I learned was self taught so I was not really paying attention. But I do think that you can easily spend a week on the tool and go over every nook and cranny. We only had the consultant in for a day or two.

Implementation

Tableau Server9.1
Based on 13 answers
My department was largely Excel and paper-based when I started, so there's been a tremendous amount of work to get the data into shape, so when I look at the overall implementation of our visualization and reporting infrastructure, I'm less satisfied. Tableau has been wonderful, the one place that would get me to a 10 is if it was easier to tune workbook performance on Tableau Server, there are a huge number of variables to deal with across the workbook/application/hardware stack. In a small environment like ours that takes more effort than I'd like.

Alternatives Considered

We find Tableau Server much more flexible and powerful for the developer. The resulting dashboard and interactive charts far surpass those of Business Objects. IBM Cognos is much too restrictive in its ability to present data visualizations in a way that is easily integrated into both web platforms and mobile applications.

Sisense offers a powerful backend database, Elasticube that integrates well with Web Service data sources. Tableau enables better visualization flexibility and functionality without having to write javascript.

Collaboration and Sharing

Tableau Server7.8
Based on 67 answers
  • Managing Security on the Tableau Server is really easy. Sharing the dashboards to other users and sharing the comments between users is also useful.
  • Alerting should be improved, like looking into multiple metrics on the viz before sending an alert.
  • Subscription options are limited to a few. Adding the text message is enabled but the text message is displayed at the bottom of the email. It would be great to have that at the start or provide a selection to users for bottom or top. Also when a user is subscribed to the workbook, the workbook name appears on the email which should be optional or removed.

In terms of sharing, collaboration, and access control, Tableau offers the same features that all other business intelligence tools do. You can define the roles of users and restrict data access based on these roles. You have the option to restrict data actions as well. The only major issue with sharing and collaboration arises when you wish to share a Tableau report with someone not using the tool, in which case, the report becomes "read-only"

Data Integration

Tableau Server8.9
Based on 70 answers
We use 80% native connectors, but as a work around we use Excel data to feed Tableau for any other data sources other than native connectors. Workday connectivity is important for us to automate the HR dashboards. While publishing, it's better to have a default to embed a password rather than always changing it to embed the password.

I'm not super involved with the process of integrating our data sources with Tableau, but I know that we use it with a wide array of data sources, many of which update in real-time.

Return on Investment

  • We have standardized to use Tableau as BI Tool across the company which saved money by killing other BI tools
  • Enabling Tableau as an enterprise tool helped save time on user support for various tools
