TeamViewer and Chrome Remote Desktop are remote desktop tools. Both let users access devices remotely and can be used free, though TeamViewer requires a license for commercial use. Commonly used for troubleshooting and technical support, both solutions can be used by individuals who want to use a mobile device to access their primary computer. TeamViewer requires a license for commercial use but it has a far larger feature set than Chrome Remote Desktop. Both solutions are used by businesses of all sizes, though TeamViewer can support more business use cases and is more frequently deployed across business or enterprise environments.

Features

Both TeamViewer and Chrome Remote Desktop allow users to remotely access connected devices and share a screen, without spending any money.

Chrome Remote Desktop is lightweight, fast, and easy to set up. There’s a 100 device limit on how many devices can be managed with the software, making it a popular choice for users with multiple devices who need a simple, straightforward remote desktop interface, or who need to share a screen. For security-conscious users, Chrome Remote Desktop uses a PIN to verify connections.

Beyond free access, TeamViewer provides features to cater to full-service technical support teams that Chrome Remote Desktop does not. Users can take advantage of integrated chat, cross-device file-sharing, remote wake-up and installation, and clipboard syncing. TeamViewer also includes custom-branded SOS buttons that can be installed on end-user devices, giving them one-click access to remote support teams. Overall, TeamViewer is focused on giving remote support staff all the tools they need to quickly and efficiently solve their customers’ problems.

Limitations

However, TeamViewer and Chrome Remote Desktop each have their limitations. Consider the drawbacks of each before choosing a solution.

Chrome Remote Desktop lacks the full feature set of TeamViewer, but some users have other complaints with the software. The tool requires a Google account and requires the use of Google Chrome. Some users have encountered RAM spikes while using the software, and others have issues with multi-monitor setups. Chrome Remote Desktop isn’t under active development, meaning that bugs and other frustrations may take a long time to be fixed – if they get fixed at all.

TeamViewer, on the other hand, can be resource intensive and requires a high-bandwidth connection to work properly. Some users have also complained about limitations on file transfer sizes, while others encountered problems when trying to create a remote session between devices running different versions of TeamViewer. The most common complaint, however, was about pricing and business practices. Many customers were frustrated by the fine print of TeamViewer’s subscription agreement and found it difficult or impossible to cancel their subscription when they wanted to. If you use TeamViewer, be sure to carefully read and understand their subscription terms.

Pricing

TeamViewer offers 3 tiers of pricing. The Business plan is $50.90 per month and allows one user to manage up to 200 devices. The Premium plan is $102.90 per month and allows up to 15 users to manage a total of 300 devices, with one session active at a time. Lastly, the Corporate plan is $206.90 per month and allows up to 30 users to manage up to 500 devices, with up to three sessions active at a time.

Chrome Remote Desktop is free to use for anyone with a Google account.

Google
It is well suited in cases where your company/organization is looking for a low/no cost remote desktop solution, or is looking for something that can be used by most anyone right away. Most organizations don't want things to be too complex, especially with a remote desktop solution, which is generally not very complex software to begin with. It would be less appropriate in cases where the company/organization has already purchased licensing for a commercial product, and/or has been heavily using a commercial product for some time.

TeamViewer
It is well suited if the team members work remotely and need constant collaboration and communication throughout the development cycle. It is so helpful for Systems Engineers in the Software industry to resolve laptop and computer issues. It is also helpful for troubleshooting hardware issues like printers, scanners, server racks, and more. It is less suited if the teams are small and no remote access or group calls are needed, they could very well use telephones and mobile phones.

Pros
Google
  • Unlike Microsoft's Remote Desktop, this program is the same across platforms, which is helpful for users.
  • This program also allows direct control over the desktop (like TeamViewer) and doesn't give you a simulated log on (like Remote Desktop). This is advantageous for seeing exactly what's on the screen but can make it a little laggy.
  • The interface is very nice and clear once it's set up. It's obvious which computer is which and it's just a couple of clicks from opening the program to a connection.
  • The mobile app is also really really well done.

TeamViewer
  • Allows remote login on to systems where the user doesn’t have to have their email established to open a link.
  • It uses the full monitor instead of a browser
  • File transfers are a breeze
  • Chat functionality works well too
  • Multiple sessions at once and viewing multiple monitors easily

Cons
Google
  • The session can be seen on the screen of the workstation. Could be a privacy issue. It DOESN'T work like traditional RDP, much closer to a screen sharing support session.
  • There is no built in File Transfer. Its not a deal breaker, but definitely an annoyance.

  • We are very happy about the TeamViewer functionality and recognize a lot of advanced functionality in comparison with Anydesk for example.
  • It's fast and very reliable.
  • We think that TeamViewer is a very secure platform.
  • We like to use new feature and functions when they get available.

A very easy lightweight tool that is completely scalable and deployed via google admin platform. The tool is free to use and works extremely well with the chrome devices we currently have deployed. Any organization using chrome or google suites should look into this tool as it's much easier to use then other remote software in the market

We will definitely renew our TeamViewer software license when the time comes. This service works and does not matter on what device you are trying to control (it depends on the license), and it is very responsive and does not seem to use up a lot of data.

Usability

Compared to other products I've used (ConnectWise Control), TeamViewer is harder to set up and get connected. It is especially difficult to set up "permanent" unattended remote access, where you want to be able to connect to and control a remote computer without having to exchange codes and passwords every time you connect.

The only support I ever accessed were help files and web tutorials. I never tried to access personal support, mostly because I don't believe much of it is available. As a free service, my expectations for support are pretty low; that said, Chrome Remote Desktop is easy enough to configure and troubleshoot even with limited technical knowledge.

the few times i have had to contact teamviewer support, they were very responsive and give me quick answers and seemed to understand my problems quickly and easily. I did not have to sit on the phone for hours on hold or get passed around to multiple phone support techs before finding a solution to my issues, so i would rate their support very highly.

I have never used the online training either. No nothing that really sticks out. For the most part I have only had to uninstall and reinstall application a couple of times when I hit a glitch. I will say that on a MAC it is a little harder to implement due to Apple's Permissions that need to be set. Sometimes it needs the client to intervene to get those permissions set.

Chrome Remote Desktop seems to be a an easy to use and efficient program. Such as TeamViewer, however TeamViewer offers more program features such as able to control a device's function (shutting down, restarting, audio input, cmd etc). With those added program features I believe Chrome Remote Desktop can almost be up to par with TeamViewer.

Horses for courses they say but all around, TeamViewer is the best software for remote management, period. Pulseway's remote desktop can work well on the phone app but on a desktop, it is often unreliable and drops connections. AnyDesk is not appropriate for our business and is only good on a case-by-case basis.

  • Average Effective/workable time of a team member has increased because the team member does not to wait for the IT team do the installment of any software and hand the laptop over again.
  • Cost for the alternate laptops have been reduced, since there is less requirement now to handover a backup PC for the employees until the current PC's issue is resolved, if it's software issue.
  • Cost of the transport, electricity and building maintenance, has reduced, since the remote working option for the employees is available with the TeamViewer.
