TeamViewer

I would likely mention Team Viewer as a consideration to someone who needs to access multiple computers, or to link several operators and computers together for a meeting, etc. If someone only needs to access one or two other computers/terminals, there are other products that I think offer much more value for the price.

Wayk Bastion

It is a product that is very small footprint that allows remote control. Can be used very efficiently and effectively in a small environment. That would be up to 50 computers. You can use this in a larger environment but it would require multiple techs to cover. Currently I am the only helpdesk tech in my company.

Pros

TeamViewer

  • Ability to keep a list of multiple computers across a lot of sites. The organization and grouping is nice.
  • I can use it on my PC, Mac, or iPhone and it works great on any platform.
  • It supports multiple screens very well.

Wayk Bastion

  • Wayk Now has 3 authentication methods to use when connecting in to a remote Wayk Now instance - Secure Remote Password (the app password), Secure Remote Delegation (the OS credentials which is used to gain elevated rights should they be required) and finally Prompt for Permission which is very handy if your client isn't IT literate so they just get a prompt to click on to authenticate with the app that way. From what I've seen in other remote assist apps, this is fairly unique.
  • Another new feature that I think gives Wayk a slight edge over the competition is a new graphics codec for the video feed from the client app called GFWX. Again its certainly a unique take on this problem of streaming the video to the client ends app. Basically it means that the image quality is a lot better for a lot less bandwidth because of the codec's compression.
  • The last point that Wayk Now does well is its integration with the other Devolutions products such as Remote Desktop Manager in which you can create Wayk Now session entries so that you can build up a DB of your clients/your own unattended Wayk Now instances that you can open from within RDM.

Cons

TeamViewer

  • Perhaps the biggest con of TeamViewer is it's pricing and licensing system. While a personal license is free, any form of commercial or business license is a minimum of $50/month. There used to be a one-time fee which was also quite expensive ($600+ depending on the license), but it was perpetual. Now, in order to use TeamViewer on a business level, you must pay the minimum $50/month. For occasional use, this fee is simply too high when there are other, less expensive options out there.
  • During install, you are asked if TeamViewer is being used on for personal or business use. When you select personal, all features of TeamViewer are available, but with a personal license. When you select business use, all the features are again present, but on a trial basis until a license is purchased. Unfortunately, if you accidentally install TeamViewer with a business license instead of a personal license, it is extremely difficult, if not near impossible to change the license. You cannot change the license on your own, you must contact TeamViewer with your machine ID for their support to change the license. However, TeamViewer doesn't guarantee that they will be able to change the license, and they quote you around 30 days to actually change the license, when the free trial itself is only 7 days. Once the business trial runs up, TeamViewer is effectively useless.
  • Continuing along the lines of licensing terms, if you install the personal version of TeamViewer, but TeamViewer detects that you may be using it on a business level, your license will automatically change from personal to business. TeamViewer detects this by monitoring how many client computers you connect to - if that number exceeds a certain value over a certain period of time (both are nebulous), the license is changed. This is an issue if you are using TeamViewer on a personal basis to provide FREE tech support to friends or family. If this occurs, you again have to contact TeamViewer and hope that they will respond to your request and change the license back to personal.
  • On a more technical note, TeamViewer cannot relay certain key commands to a remote machine such as cmd-tab (Mac) or ctrl-tab (Windows) to quickly tab through open applications, ctrl-alt-delete (though there is at least a menu item allowing that key command to be sent), and other interface-related items. Typically, the key commands that cannot be sent are related to deep system integration.
  • While TeamViewer, as a remote access viewer, can be easily installed on iOS or Android - to use it for screen sharing functionality (wherein a user can share the screen of an iOS device) you must be using a business license.

Wayk Bastion

  • Requires an agent install on the remote computer (or a full Wayk install). Would like to see a tool that allowed someone to connect to my WAYK invite, and use the services remotely so that it is a true no-touch on the remote server.
  • Limited feature set (by design, but if you are looking for a full featured remote support product, this probably isn't it). Of course since this is by design it could be considered a pro.

As long as I continue to provide remote support for my clients, it's a no brainier. For what I pay out, I probably make it back tenfold in the ability to provide remote support from wherever and whenever. Not to mention the saved gas money for a fix that only takes 5 minutes but it takes you 20 minutes to get there. As my business continues to grow, and I support more and more clients, my need for TeamViewer will only grow.

Considering that Wayk Now comes in a free edition that can be used commercially, even if I wasn't to renew Wayk Now for whatever reason, I would still use it, but I do actually require the unattended access feature which is available for free now with the new free business licence.

TeamViewer is a system that is very easy to understand and grasp the concept of which is a very nice thing because users that don't have much technology and computer background can use the system easily. While being easy to understand for the average user, it doesn't lose the functionality and features that IT people love to see with software that makes it easier for us to do our jobs.

Although it was never my direct responsibility, I can say that the customer support is something that we never had issues with using TeamViewer. If there would ever be an issue, it would be sorted out in a very timely manner and without wait or delays.

My experience with their support is for a related product, not Wayk Now; however Devolutions support has always been superior to most regardless of the product being used. I left it at a 9 instead of a 10 simply because I haven't used it, but I would expect nothing less than a 10 from my experiences with RDM - both free and paid versions.

I have never used the online training either. I have watched a few informational videos that were helpful when learning how to do a specific procedure within TeamViewer and get the most out of the software by utilizing one of the many features that are available with the software. Again, 5 if for neutral.

Alternatives Considered

TeamViewer

I use the above-mentioned options when there is a need for connecting on a lower bandwidth internet or if the budget is stringent. Two more good alternatives I use are: AnyDesk and Ammyy Admin which works great. I wonder why these two software packages are not available in the list of options here.

I think they're great tools also. But. Skype for Business, it's only for 365 users or, with external users, be prepared to download a nice 50Mb PLUGIN.... And TeamViewer, I think it's great, but lots of companies around the world block it thinking it's a malware, more than a support tool.

Return on Investment

TeamViewer

  • TeamViewer has saved my company a great deal of time, my team members and I are able to deploy our solutions to our overseas customers without having to travel there.
  • TeamViewer has also saved my company good amount of finances, other PC sharing software are mostly premium and require payment to take advantage of all the features, TeamViewer is free yet has excellent service delivery.
  • TeamViewer has generally improved our organization's relationship with our clients.
