Tenable.io

Tenable.io is a cost effective Internal and External scanner. The Internal scanner came with a .ova, so it was very simple and quick to deploy it into our ESXi environment. It has a cloud-based dashboard for management and the internal scanner is configured to auto-update from Tenable.io. The license came with 4 External PCI scans (with remediation) a year.

SecurityCenter is definitely the juggernaut of the industry. You don't see many shops that are not using Nessus and or SecurityCenter. As a pen tester, I do not judge shops that use Nessus as a catch all, as there are a lot of things you can get hyper focused on and a tool like this helps you see things you may have missed.

Cons

Tenable.io

  • There doesn't seem to be a feature to replicate a previous scan with the same IP addresses as before. You have to manually enter them each time.
  • It would be nice to be able to see the DNS (such as hovering to see it) without having to click on the actual IP address under the specific vulnerability.
  • It would be nice to be able to sort the vulnerabilities found in different ways. There are some options available, but more would be a plus.

  • Tenable could make it easier to report on missing reg key.
  • Tenable can also make it easier to report on os level patches vs application patches.

Support is usually really great at walking you through any steps you need to take when you get stuck on something. There are a few false positives and errors that have come up over the years that required their help to get through. Unfortunately, the steps required to diagnose some problems are more tedious than I think should be necessary. (IE: SQL instances can throw errors that clog up your logs because one plugin affects it in a certain way. The process to diagnose this is to watch timestamps of plugins in a log while monitoring the SQL logs at the same time and using your best guess as to what is causing it.)

Alternatives Considered

Tenable.io

Tenable.io has a comparable set of features, with excellent support and a competitive price. After less than desirable experiences with another company, we moved to Tenable and haven't looked back since.

We selected Tenable because is one of the best solution at the moment. Tenable is a powerful tool that we use for validation of our patching methodology. This is very helpful if you are only patching what the vendor deems as critical and then with this external validation you now have a new source for what is important. The user interface is clean and easy to navigate. Low false positives rapid signature release frequent product enhancement and updates.

Return on Investment

Tenable.io

  • Our customers are requiring monthly internal scans and yearly external scans. Getting both in one was very convenient.
  • The time saved no longer having to manually check servers, switches, and firewall for vulnerabilities. The automated scans have allowed me more time to remediate the issues.
  • Having a third party shows the vulnerabilities and severity, has been helpful with persuading management the necessity of updates and upgrades.

  • ROI from Tenable suite of products has been well worth its cost.
  • Their pricing model has changed and they charge higher than their competitors but for the usage we have currently it serves us well.
  • Customization might not be what was expected but I believe we are using the tool to the fullest.
