Time Doctor

Suited well for service-based industries where time tracking is essential for billing and revenue. It's also appropriate for both business and personal use. (For example, to track studying hours or education and training time. Less appropriate? Blue collar usage where the traditional time clock/timecard may still come into play

Toggl

Pros

Time Doctor

  • Let's you time multiple projects in one day.
  • Emails you your times so you have them even if you didn't record them.
  • Has a widget in the top menu bar of your desktop that's easy to read whether it's on or off.

Toggl

  • Lightweight interface. It is very simple to start and stop tracking.
  • Categorization, tags, projects, and clients. Make it easy to categorize time tracking and pull accurate reports
  • Reporting: their reporting system makes it simple to slice and dice our tracked data to get precisely the intel we need.

Cons

Time Doctor

  • One thing I would love to see is integration with my cell phone. Time Doctor already has an app, but I want it to automatically capture the time I spend on my phone with clients. For now I have to manually enter in this time and must note when the call started and when it ended.
  • Integration into Wave apps where I generate my invoices. I'd like to be able to select a project from Time Doctor in my invoice and have it automatically populate the time I spent on it and the dates I worked on the project rather than manually finding and entering this information.

Toggl

  • When I generate a report based on a long date range (as opposed to a single day or week), Toggl provides logged time entries per project, user, or client, according to my search. Each time entry in the report is itemized and includes a description. However, the date and time per entry is not generated with this data. When I create invoices, I have to manually find what day the work was done.

The support was terrible! They never responded in sufficient time and their assistance was always super vague. I never felt like they had an actual solution to my concerns. They were nice, but I don't feel like they were trained in their own system. It felt like I was talking to a wall.

I haven't needed much support from Toggl, as it's mostly come from a small team trying out the tool. I'm not entirely sure what the best way to reach them would be if I did need them. I'm also not sure how responsive they would be to support requests. But I think it's positive that I have not needed them

Alternatives Considered

Time Doctor

I have tried other time tracking tools and found them lacking in the way that they track activities or the limited scope of the reports that you can access from them. Time doctor does everything that I want it to do and does it brilliantly

Toggl

Toggl is sleeker and so much more user-friendly than Time Doctor. The Chrome extension with the intuitive power button icon really does increase compliance, which I think is one of the most important, and sometimes overlooked, considerations when choosing a new software for your team. If people won't use it, it doesn't really matter if it's more affordable and even more highly recommended.

Return on Investment

Time Doctor

  • TD afforded us the resources to effectively monitor and make necessary HR changes to best suit the needs of the Organisation, whilst improving overall productivity.
  • TD afforded us the resources to effectively monitor and make necessary HR changes leading to fiscal savings.

Toggl

  • We replaced our in-house time tracking tool easily
  • We could incorporate the previous few months of tracking via CSV/Spreadsheet import
  • We still don't have the full discipline to track everything for everybody. It's only as good as the data you put in.
