Good:
Simple tests like hiding and showing a button, text, etc.
Adding text onto the page
Changing the color of things
Split tests where the whole page can change

Bad:
Complicated tests regarding custom JavaScript that's run (there may be asynchronous actions happening in that script that we need the page blank for until those actions finish)
Want a smarter visual editor (e.g. we can change the layout and the test would still work, by class or id selectors)

Crazy Egg

Crazy Egg is great if you have static content and want to be able to easily set up heatmaps and scrollmaps to see how people interact with your webpages across different devices types. Straightforward and reliable. In circumstances when you want fast turnarounds, Crazy Egg isn't the right tool as the visualisations often take the better part of a day to generate. It also doesn't perform well if your site has dynamic content - either AJAX-driven or dynamically expanding.

Pros

  • Live previews of changes as you make them
  • Direct HTML access or a simple UI, as needed
  • Google Analytics integration

  • Crazy Egg allows you to see where people clicked from whatever source they came from. Whether it is organic or a referral site, these specific clicks can be measured in that particular page being tracked.
  • The scroll down tracker is an effective and efficient tool to understand how your users operate. Some demographics do not scroll at all, while others will scroll to the bottom of the page no matter how long it is. This information can them be applied to formatting the website to best accommodate your target viewer.
  • Crazy Egg gives a company, at least this one, plenty of views for the entire month! I can't remember the exact amount off the top of my head, but I believe it's 200,000 views. When tracking views on a specific site, you can also specify how many views you would like. For example: If I would like to track a website homepage for one week and it receives 200,000 visitors in one week, obviously I do not want to track them all. I can cut it off at 10,00 views and Crazy Egg will automatically stop the tracking for me.

Cons

  • The first-party analytics are harder to use than the Google Analytics integration and show more inconsistent results - would be nice if these were improved
  • The web editor is sometimes slow to load or reflect changes, and occasionally locks up
  • Preview screenshots seem to be spliced together, so they often show multiple instances of the site header spaced down the page

  • I would say overall Crazy Egg is a great tool, but one additional thing I would like made is an archive tool. Archiving Crazy Egg by hand, which was my job, is quite the tedious task, but once it is done, we have those records forever. We can look back and see how our holiday campaign did the last few years with what worked and what didn't, but I wish I was able to archive these on the website. Maybe not even necessarily on the website, but be able to have an archive tool so I would not have to download each page being tracked one by one. I guess what I am trying to get at is some form of excel documentation that would download in the same form every time. This way it could be copied and pasted into a general excel spreadsheet if people desired to archive their findings.
  • Being able to track over 200,000 visits would be nice with just the basic Crazy Egg. You are able to upgrade for more space, but that costs more as well. Although I completely understand why it is limited. But the pricing is quite the bargain considering all that you receive!
  • The tech support is great! But it seems like they are understaffed. I haven't had many issues with it and the company seems to respond quickly even if they are short staffed. They have treated the company very well.

Visual Website Optimizer is a easy to use and powerful tool for testing web pages. We use it to test lead generation websites to increase the number of people that complete a form. Before we decided to go with Visual Website Optimizer we did research into other options and found Visual Website Optimizer to be one of the best.

It's a great tool considering how inexpensive it is. If used correctly and you have a plan for tracking your websites, this tool can make a world of a difference. If you are not going to sit down and take the time to make a plan for how to use this tool, I would say it is not worth your time. Yes, you can look at items on your website that need to be changed, but without a consistent plan, other important items that need changing can be lost in the mix. Make sure you have enough time and energy to invest in this and it will be well worth it

Usability

I gave Visual Website Optimizer a rating of 8 because it is overall a great product to use. Setting up and keeping track of various tests is easy and straight forward. The only reason why this product is not rated higher is because the support documents online leave a lot of room for improvement.

If it's installed on appropriate pages it's highly intuitive and usable. If the pages aren't appropriate, it's very frustrating and confusing and disappointing for the client.

It's slow to post data, and slow to get a snapshot to finally be active (i.e. not pending). Not intolerable, but would be nice to see data within a couple hours. Often have to wait to the next day.

While their online document support is lacking a simple email to their support team will almost always get responded to the next day. It has however taken more than one email to explain the problem to the support team till they understood the problem. The solution I was given also only half fixed the problem the rest I figured out on my own.

Their support and fast responses show how much they care about their customers. Even if there have been little bugs that aren't a huge deal, the response time is still wonderful. I have emailed them several times and within the next day, they have responded with an answer. There have been one or two times where they have no idea of a bug and were not able to supply an answer to us, but these were minor and they still responded quickly.

Implementation

VWO8.0
Based on 2 answers
Overall, the implementation of VWO is straightforward. If you've got a straightforward way of deploying code to all of your test pages, either a good CMS or a TMS, then implementation should be a breeze. There is no tweaking to be done to the code itself, and once deployed it has the flexibility to cope with different VWO modules (tracking, conversion analysis, session analysis) without modification.

Alternatives Considered

The company actually still uses Optimizely and Google Analytics as well. Optimizely works well with Crazy Egg because we can do beta testing not only to see if the conversion rate goes up (Optimizely), but also see how the user is interacting with the change (Crazy Egg). Google Analytics is in a class of its own. I don't feel it can directly be compared to Crazy Egg because, while it tracks what the user is doing, you are not visibly able to see it. Having that visible aspect on Crazy Egg is great!

Its reliability (not scaleability, as the question asks for, sorry) is pretty good but through our testing we know that some clicks do not get recorded. It doesn't bother us a lot because we look at the aggregate of thousands of visits, but we do know it misses things. As for scaleability, it's about right. You really don't want zillions of clicks per snapshot - the screen just turns to 100% dots and you lose the ability to differentiate different screen areas. We find that 25,000 clicks for a page gives us a really good view.

Return on Investment

  • Significantly increased sales on several products after reorganizing their product pages or adding promotions, at essentially no extra cost
  • Ruled out proposed changes that would have damaged our ROI before we pushed them to live for all users
  • Taught us how to design our website to best suit our specific customers (albeit through trial-and-error)

  • Improved user experience on multiple pages through our websites
