VWO

I wouldn't recommend VWO to non-enterprise users. Hotjar does a lot of the tracking equally as well at a fraction of the cost and there are split testing options out there that are much, much cheaper. It's convenient if you have the budget to have it all in one place, but if you don't, then doing it on two different platforms is still workable. If I'm price sensitive I'd probably explore some other options in combination with Hotjar.

Mixpanel

  • It's great for product teams who want to better understand their users from a macro level
  • I would suggest using something like FullStory for understanding user flows instead of Mixpanel
  • Prepare to spend some time learning how it all works together and creating reports
  • Once you get reporting figured out, it's pretty easy to get value out of this
  • Make sure you confirm that your data is tracking properly (you can use the live view for this) before putting too much value on the reports

Pros

  • Visual editor for A/B testing is really solid, especially if your site is fairly static. It gets a bit tougher when you have very dynamic content but it's still much easier than having our dev team make two versions of a page and try and split traffic.
  • Recordings and Heatmaps are invaluable assets for figuring out how well certain pages are working. While they don't replace standard user testing they can supplement it very well and reinforce your position to make a design change.
  • Support has been fairly quick to resolve rather complex issues, even with a bit of a language barrier a lot of the time. Discussing technical challenges over chat is not easy but I can usually get these difficult challenges ironed out in a day or so.

  • Easily integrates with Segment which makes setting up event/people tracking very easy if you're already using Segment with other tools.
  • Creating quick reports to share with your team is really easy and the visuals are nice looking. If you launch a new feature, you can quickly create a nice looking graph to share with your product team to let them know how things are going.
  • The Live feed of events on each People profile is really cool if you need to drill into a user flow. Also, if you're not using FullStory, this live view is a great way to help users with issues since you'll know the exact set of events related to their issue.

Cons

  • Observations currently (9/14/18) don't support outside domains.
  • Observation collection sample rate is a little low (for the price) - takes a bit longer to collect meaningful amount of data.

  • I didn't use the engagement features at all but it seems like they could have a better WYSIWYG editor for the emails for non-technical people using Mixpanel.
  • The custom reports feature seems to be really powerful but I wish they had more resources/templates for creating custom reports. I don't code so it was really hard for me to use this feature...BUT the reports I was able to get help with, were really powerful.
  • I wanted a dashboard area for all of my reports in one view. It seems like they were implementing this when I was moving jobs. If it's not available yet, they definitely need to add a master dashboard page for arranging saved reports.

I have been very happy with it so far, for all the reasons detailed already. The minor annoyances and things I wish were different are no big deal, and overall, it meets our needs very well

I am very happy with Mixpanel and I feel as I would be flying blind if I didn't have it. The analytics I get from Mixpanel helps me make confident decisions regarding our marketing and product design strategies.

I gave Visual Website Optimizer a rating of 8 because it is overall a great product to use. Setting up and keeping track of various tests is easy and straight forward. The only reason why this product is not rated higher is because the support documents online leave a lot of room for improvement.

Support

While their online document support is lacking a simple email to their support team will almost always get responded to the next day. It has however taken more than one email to explain the problem to the support team till they understood the problem. The solution I was given also only half fixed the problem the rest I figured out on my own.

Implementation

Overall, the implementation of VWO is straightforward. If you've got a straightforward way of deploying code to all of your test pages, either a good CMS or a TMS, then implementation should be a breeze. There is no tweaking to be done to the code itself, and once deployed it has the flexibility to cope with different VWO modules (tracking, conversion analysis, session analysis) without modification.

Alternatives Considered

The key aspect in the decision to switch to VWO was the integration of all the features as a single unified resource and platform. The competitors are very good at what they do (did back then) but required moving insight and understanding from one platform to the other. With VWO this problem is not only solved but the recent change to VWOs focus on becoming a conversion optimisation platform has increased our capabilities significantly. We feel the product fits in perfectly with our human centred approach and has not only increased stake holder confidence in our thinking and actions but also helped us to become better at what we do as a team and as individuals in meeting the needs of our users.

I wasn't directly part of the evaluation for Amplitude but I think we went with Mixpanel because of the price.

Return on Investment

  • We've redesigned several pages as a result of A/B testing that I conducted. It's hard to judge the overall ROI because there are so many factors across our platform. But we can say with confidence that conversion rates on buttons such as "Add to Cart" increased as a result of our testing.
  • The leadership team fought against the idea of the survey data for some time. In their mind they had already talked to the end user, so it was a waste of time. One nice thing about VWO is how easy it was to build these Surveys. Because of the speed of implementation, I wasn't blocked from creating them, and we managed to learn many useful things from the results. A great example, is that our user's #1 request on the product page was for better images. We had suspected this, but VWO allowed us to quantify it with qualitative feedback.
  • Best ROI was probably finding the difference in funnel data between our old platform, and the newly released platform. By seeing that we had a higher drop off on the catalog pages on the new platform, we were able to target that area for diagnosis. Ultimately, the results here are related to bullet point 1.

  • We learned a lot of valuable information about our customers
  • We use the free plan, so it doesn't cost us much money
  • We collected significant amount of data that could bring some value in the future
