Likelihood to Recommend

Webex Meetings

Webex works just like any other web meeting tool. It has an app, a desktop app, and a web version. At this point, I would be unlikely to recommend it because of its specificity to the business world (as opposed to something like Zoom, BlueJeans, etc...) and the requirement for a corporate licensing model that doesn't exactly make the juice worth the squeeze for a product that really doesn't differentiate itself on an enterprise level as anything uniquely special amongst its peers.

Zoom

Great use case: If you hold multiple meetings (5+) every week with people that you can’t easily meet in person (e.g. if you do a lot of business over the phone), Zoom is worth the price.
Great use case: If you regularly do presentations (slide decks, videos, pitches) over the phone or video call, Zoom makes this process very simple (screen-sharing, whiteboarding, chatting).
Great use case: If you expect people to either call in or join by a computer in the same meeting, Zoom makes it really easy to combine people joining by phone and computer.
Bad use case: If you only do a few phone or video calls a week, you’d probably be okay with a free solution like Google Hangouts (not worth paying for the additional Zoom features).
Bad use case: If you have to share lots of files back and forth throughout a meeting, I prefer using a third-party solution WHILE I’m on the Zoom call (i.e. I will share files via Slack or email while I’m on Zoom, rather than use Zoom’s file share feature).

Pros

Webex Meetings

  • It is very easy to set up a webex meeting. This allows teams to quickly get together and on the same page during critical events
  • Webex is a robust platform offering a variety of options to connect. Whether you're travelling or in office there's a way to dial in and begin sharing
  • Webex is reliable. Along with the ease of use this platform never fails us and always delivers.

Zoom

  • User-friendliness. Zoom's interface is straightforward, and you can trust that a new user to whom you send an invite will be walked effortlessly through every step of joining the call, in a matter of minutes.
  • Recording. Recording a call is easy and reliable. It's great to be able to bring absent team members up to speed so simply.
  • Back-end data. All kinds of stats are easily available, from call participant name lists to participation numbers over time.

Cons

Webex Meetings

  • Better integration with Google Calendar to allow a user to auto-create a meeting event with a WebEx URL in location as default in addition to physical room location
  • Easy way to record meetings and share with participants that were not able to get to the meeting
No photo available

Zoom

  • Zoom could do a better job with moving some of the calls to action buttons in easier to see areas. Every now and then folks can't initially find where to click to share their screen.
  • I'd like to the ability to paste images into the chat.
  • It would be nice if the chat transcript could be downloaded for the host. I haven't seen this offered.

Everything is easy to understand and use, new users need no training. On the flipside there are minor annoyances such as calendar export being cumbersome (need re-auth every time) and also not having recordings shared within a team or forcing people to name them.

There have been less than a handful of outages during our two years with Zoom, and whenever there was one, an email informing us of the outage went out immediately, and they had the issue resolved shortly thereafter.

Zoom has among the best performance of any video conference platform, as I've mentioned several times. Besides that, their Chat platform works great, and their back end always runs smooth. It's unfortunate that reporting can now only be done by one month at a time, but nonetheless, it only takes a second to run any kind of Zoom report, whether it's an attendee report, Poll results, a user report, a list of meetings from the past month, etc.

Zoom's support is truly world class. And I'm not sure if that's because my company was an early adopter, but nonetheless, they're very helpful. If we encounter some kind of bug (a rare event), it's not long before the engineering team gets back to me with a fix. If I want to submit a feature request, a rep gets back to me instantly saying that it's now on their scope (and then it gets added to the product shortly after). If I have a question about some feature, Zoom support always has a speedy answer. They're very good at giving detailed release notes any time there's an update, and their documentation is always great.

Implementation

That we needed complex implementation that we didn't get tells me 2 things: 1) the product was not designed in a way that "just worked" like some of its peers (Zoom / BlueJeans) and 2) had our company defined actual user needs and validated / verified that they had bought something that matched those, we would have pursued features / designs more closely aligned with what the product actually does: screen share, sometimes video, definitely VOIP audio (always an option regardless of license), and easy recording and retrieval of meetings.

If you receive any pushback from higher ups, point to any of the various positive reviews like this one. Or show Zoom's excellent Gartner report, or articles describing Zoom's partnership with Sequoia capital. It's not difficult to show how Zoom is a trustworthy industry leader with best-in-class technology.

Alternatives Considered

Webex Meetings

First of all, Webex is being used for most of the big OEM's and suppliers of the automotive industry. Broad usage makes it a logical choice. Skype for Business is useful as well and also used in the company, but for internal communication only. Due to easy connectivity and better tools, Webex Meetings is the ultimate choice for meeting management.

Zoom

Zoom has overlapping service similarities to UberConference, but they are not all the same. UberConference is what we used prior to Zoom, and it can do teleconferencing and screen sharing, but it does not have video capacity. Zoom has the video conferencing and screen sharing, but not the teleconferencing. If Zoom had a way for multiple people to join in on a conference call (not a video conference), we would stop using UberConference completely. Zoom's video conferencing is flawless, the screen share is better and takes up less bandwidth, and the overall experience with Zoom is more "user friendly" than UberConference

Because the Basic licenses are completely free, and because it's very easy to configure and install Zoom, and because anyone can join Zoom from a link without needing an account, scaling is a Breeze. There are absolutely no roadblocks. My company keeps adding more Zoom Pro license every week since it's so in demand. We were able to convert users from several different platforms onto Zoom with no trouble at all.

Return on Investment

Webex Meetings

  • It reduces traveling cost for the business since you don't have to see the other person every time for a meeting. It reduces travel time since you don't have to drive 1 hour to see someone for a 15-minute meeting. That time can be used for other business items.
  • It boosts efficiency as everyone will be on the same page through seeing and hearing what should be done.
  • It helps recalling important items as there are recordings of the meeting, so you can go back and check.

Zoom

  • Save time & Money on not having to travel to meetings
  • Opened up the ability to service clients further afield
  • Already spending too much time in front of a screen though. :-( THe ease of use has meant not doing as many Face-2Face visits
