Magento Open Source

It is well suited to a company that is willing to invest in proper development, web server capacity, and ongoing maintenance. It's not a good solution for a DIY'er unless they are very technical. But if you need any type of custom integration and are willing to invest in your solution, it will definitely give you a good ROI.

Pros

  • Customer Service is helpful and supportive
  • Relatively quick
  • Ensuring to accurately import sales transactions and customer information to Quickbooks

  • Compared to other solutions, Magento has far more control over exact nuances of e-commerce such as discounting, customer segmentation, and multi-site control.
  • Magento as a whole is reliable and can be made very fast thanks to built-in fullpage caching on Magento 2.
  • Magento is scalable and can handle huge traffic, or it can be built for a small site.

It's the dominant force in the SMB open source market. With the continued support of eBay/PayPal, Magento will continue to evolve and should be a market leader for some time.

Alternatives Considered

I did not find any other solution available for our need.

In the past, I've used Shopify, WordPress + Woocommerce and Drupal + Drupal Commerce. Magento CE is much easier to use since it's open source and it's bundled together in one package. It's built specifically with e-commerce in mind so there are no worries about add-ons/integration unless they are completely necessary for a specific type of functionality no included in the primary software package.

Return on Investment

  • There is an on-going monthly fee, but our company finds it is well worth it for both the support we recieve as well as the time saved by not manually entering orders into out accounting software from our online store.
  • The biggest ROI is absolutely time saved in entering orders.

  • Magento will definitely give you a good ROI if you are prepared to invest in a good site. Even B2B companies are more and more expected to provide online resources for their customers. Magento, being easily customized to work with any 3rd party system, allows you to provide these resources to help you keep and grow your customer base.
  • A well-designed site will also increase your search rankings and draw more traffic to your site.
  • Being easily incorporated with Google Analytics and Tag Manager, you can tweak your site to increase traffic and sales.
