It is definitely suited for people to learn quickly. There aren't as many bells and whistles, but it is reliable. I would recommend it from small shop to large enterprise.

PRTG

PRTG is great for our small team, it provides the higher-level insights we need. We do not need much depth at this point, so we disable those sensors. Having a couple maps up on a screen in our office is also great eye-candy for our users when they walk in, it always impresses the head of our institution.Getting more in-depth monitoring and general analytics will require significantly more work. Sensors will need to be adjusted and added, and there are no pre-built maps of any kind. It just seems to lack some serious built-in "power tools."

Cons

  • Setting up traps for exchange services has led to false positives in the past.

  • Alerts configuration is a little tricky to fine tune and could be easier. It can be very granular(good), but that adds to the complexity.
  • Mobile app could be a little better laid out

Alternatives Considered

WhatsUp Gold was much easier to install and setup. I ran into many issues installing Spiceworks, and had such a learning curve. I'm not an expert in Linux and that is the platform that it installed on. I'm very comfortable in a Windows environment, and Whatsup Gold installs on a Windows computer.

PRTG is a more cost effective solution, is easier to configure, and more robust in its deployment.

Return on Investment

  • As I mentioned earlier, the monitoring of the external environment and uptime is a necessity. An hour down is a 1% loss of revenue per day which may not sound like much but in a million dollar company, that 1% is a huge chunk.
  • The backup configuration has been very handy in turn around time for failed equipment. I did have a homegrown way of backing up configurations but had to check daily and verify every backup. This becomes very time consuming and a waste of company time.
  • Only negative is the mapping. In the Cisco world CDP is a great way to map connections and they don't seem to do it that way.

  • I am a level 2 engineer and don't really have information on this. I would say positive, as we are using it for enterprise level clients with environments of 2,000 users or more.
