Discord is a communications platform that integrates text chat, voice, and video into an app. Users can directly message each other, join servers populated and managed by other users typically organized by topic, create their own server, and keep a list of personal contacts in the app. Initially oriented toward audiences in platforms like Reddit and Twitch, which in 2015 were abandoning traditionally popular services like IRC, Discord has maintained a reputation that it is primarily used by gamers and associated communities. As of this year, the company has pivoted to branding as an all-encompassing social chat platform for all uses.

Zoom is a video communications platform specializing in web conferencing, webinars, and cloud-based telephony. Zoom also specializes in conference room management and equipment. Recently, Zoom has cemented itself as an entrant into the Unified-Communications-as-a-Service market with updates to their Zoom Phone, Zoom Rooms, and Zoom Meetings offerings to optimize online collaboration features. Potential buyers have the option of using only Zoom Meetings for conducting web conferences or adding on Zoom Rooms, Zoom Phone, and Zoom Video Webinar.

Features

As they represent similar aims, Zoom and Discord share many features and purposes, but they are distinct in several ways.

Discord’s principal volume of communication is textual. The app’s distributed framework, where the servers are virtual and supported by optional user donations, means a user can typically join the app for free, then find invites to servers. Chats inside a server are usually set to allow searches, allowing for a variety of filters. Moderators of servers can host their chats in perpetuity as they see fit.

Zoom’s principal volume of communication is video. Zoom meetings foreground the visual aspects of streaming video content, from the layout to its prominent options. Owners of meetings can secure their meetings with a variety of options, with additional moderating options. Individual meeting sessions are capped at a length of time based on the account, usually torn down when complete.

Limitations

Despite its popularity, Zoom users have identified several areas of improvement for the platform. Many users do not find Zoom’s interface to be very user-friendly, with many citing leaving a meeting not being as simple as it should be. Another common issue is starting up the program itself. With the desktop version, users have run into having to restart the program to get it to launch. On the mobile version, users find it hard to figure out where standard features like toggling participant views are in the interface.

Discord may have a tougher learning curve for many users, as the invite and username system has features that would be unfamiliar to first-time users of internet chat services. A higher degree of technical know-how may be needed for comfortable use of it. Invites to servers are not freely searchable on the app out-of-the-box. They are instead found around the internet or from other users. As such, some communities and uses of the app may appear closed-off to the casual user.

Pricing

Discord is free to use, but one can choose to boost a server at a rate determined by its moderator(s). Doing so unlocks perks for the donor, as well as unlocking features for the server itself, including more chat options, capacity, and customization.

Using Zoom for free is possible, but it is limited in terms of how long or what kinds of meetings can be held on the platform. Higher tier plans exist for those who need to host lengthier meetings and more customization, but meetings are capped at 24 hours in length.

Discord
Personally, Discord is a great tool to create online communities for your company or product, especially when our target audience is young. I would not consider it appropriate to use this tool for people over a certain age, nor would it be suitable for companies of considerable size.

I think Zoom runs circles around Teams! I just wish starting meetings was easier - anyone with a link should be able to start the meeting the way you can in Teams. It would also be great to be able to see participants when you are sharing your screen.

Pros
Discord
  • Discord allows easy setup of servers for specific groups.
  • Discord allows one-on-one private messaging as well as group communication.
  • Discord is easy to install and setup for any age group.

Zoom
  • I love how easy it is to set the focus on the presenter. It is annoying when people don't spotlight themselves as a presenter, so you get to see the whole gallery of attendees in smaller, two-inch windows.
  • I like the capability of having break-out rooms. Even though I don't use them very often, it is nice to have them available if the right situation presents itself for smaller group chats.
  • The recording quality is better than I have experienced with other products (Microsoft Teams, WebEx, etc.), and the fact that it is already an MP4, so I don't have to convert it for publishing on our intranet is huge to me.

Cons
Discord
  • Recovery when servers are down.
  • Better Nitro Deals.
  • Better bot enabling for going live - Slow sometimes or doesn't work in certain discords.

  • Sharing zoom complete information is not visible on the screen, and also a bit is confusing minimizing and maximizing.
  • Every time someone enters the chat, a chat box appears on my screen, and some features are missing from this version.
  • Automatic conference connection based on a schedule isn't an option, and neither is enhanced security measures.

We're sticking with Zoom for the foreseeable future--given its compelling feature set, ease of use, and advanced technology, there's just no other competition to be excited about. Plus it's a Gartner-recognized industry leader, so it's a rather easy choice.

I can't really say much on this. It's extremely easy to use, it's very logical and intuitive, and very easy to install and set-up. Even the settings menus make sense even to nonliterate IT people.

Zoom has among the best performance of any video conference platform, as I've mentioned several times. Besides that, their Chat platform works great, and their back end always runs smooth. It's unfortunate that reporting can now only be done by one month at a time, but nonetheless, it only takes a second to run any kind of Zoom report, whether it's an attendee report, Poll results, a user report, a list of meetings from the past month, etc.

I would give it a 10 rating because it absolutely deserves it. Discord has made things like keeping in touch extremely easy for people. As I've written before, Zoom makes us feel like we matter and that we're a client rather than a customer. They want us to succeed and they put in the time to make sure that we do. I feel like they're more of a business partner rather than simply a vendor or supplier. They spent a lot of time onboarding with us, giving us demos, helping us get set up, and then giving us follow-up to be sure it's going well.

Or show Zoom's excellent Gartner report, or articles describing Zoom's partnership with Sequoia capital. Discord has better features and it gets updated constantly with new features. It gets popular everyday and the number of people using Discord gets increased. Discord has a better interface that is easy to use, it doesn't make you confused. Better voice and video quality. Zoom cannot be beaten for ubiquity - 100% of my clients and prospective clients are already familiar with Zoom. This is the #1 reason why I use Zoom. Additionally, Zoom integrates with AcuityScheduling, saving me a lot of time in creating meetings and adding them to the calendar. Zoom is disappointing in terms of video quality, interactivity features, and privacy. In cases where I need to use the recording of webinars for digital products, I will always use Crowdcast, and in cases where privacy is essential, I will use JitsiMeet.

The billing and price model is really fair for so many functions that they offer, our remote work requires each of the features that Zoom offers, so accepting payment for a tool like this is the least we can do. I like that billing arrives on time and that they offer opportunities and payment times.

Because the Basic licenses are completely free, and because it's very easy to configure and install Zoom, and because anyone can join Zoom from a link without needing an account, scaling is a Breeze. There are absolutely no roadblocks. My company keeps adding more Zoom Pro license every week since it's so in demand. We were able to convert users from several different platforms onto Zoom with no trouble at all.

  • Discord has been such a bonus to our productivity. Instead of sending meeting links and starting lengthy email threads, we were able to quickly hop on a call with other people and get things done!

  • With the ability to quickly stop, mute, and even receive notifications when someone enters or exits the meeting room, I'm never obligated to show up while making a call.
  • It is possible to record online meetings for future reference and more effective customer service. As we dealt with a lockdown, Zoom helped our business run smoothly.
