Zoom

Great for Personal & Small Business Use. Save time and money by not having to travel to meetings. The easy setup & scheduling of 1-2-1s & meetings mean even the most technology illiterate participant can easily join a meeting without the need for an account. If you need to upscale you can easily pay and it isn't that expensive. Can get expensive though if you start to fork out money for the hardware for the conference room solutions that look great. The video & sound quality in the meetings I've had has been very good.

GoToMeeting

GoToMeeting is particularly well suited for webinars that are being witnessed by multiple people. You can set the participation levels in advance so that everyone is automatically listen only, and can submit questions by chat, has their video capabilities turned off, etc. The video setting is particularly important as some users do not realize they need to disable this, and then everyone on the webinar can see them watching (or doing weird things). I think GoToMeeting is challenging to use in a video conference setting- it is confusing and a challenge to see multiple video participants at one time. It is better when it is used more as a conference call, with a shared presentation/powerpoint as the visual element.

Pros

  • Zoom is incredibly stable. In 3 years of using it multiple times per week it has never failed me for any other reason than I had a poor Internet connection.
  • Zoom is also very easy for clients to use as all they need to do is click on the link and there's no need to download an app.
  • The screen share facility is also very easy to use and provides a lot of benefits.

Cons

  • In all honesty, I haven't come across any areas that need improving. All of the features I use in my daily routine work exceptionally well.

  • I think everyone knows the phrase "you get what you pay for". Well, you pay for the full GoToMeeting license or service and yes it is more expensive than many others that we've tried but we haven't had any problems either.

There have been less than a handful of outages during our two years with Zoom, and whenever there was one, an email informing us of the outage went out immediately, and they had the issue resolved shortly thereafter.

Performance

Zoom has among the best performance of any video conference platform, as I've mentioned several times. Besides that, their Chat platform works great, and their back end always runs smooth. It's unfortunate that reporting can now only be done by one month at a time, but nonetheless, it only takes a second to run any kind of Zoom report, whether it's an attendee report, Poll results, a user report, a list of meetings from the past month, etc.

Alternatives Considered

Zoom is better. Slightly better pricing, definitely better performance in both the app and in the codecs. It's pretty thrifty with bandwidth, and it looks good!

GoToMeeting is a little bit more advanced tool and is designed for businesses. Lync is for internal communication. Skype for me personally is more of a supplemental tool inside and outside of the organization

Scalability

Zoom10.0
Based on 1 answer
Because the Basic licenses are completely free, and because it's very easy to configure and install Zoom, and because anyone can join Zoom from a link without needing an account, scaling is a Breeze. There are absolutely no roadblocks. My company keeps adding more Zoom Pro license every week since it's so in demand. We were able to convert users from several different platforms onto Zoom with no trouble at all.
