For anyone that isn't ready for a more robust automation system like Marketo or Eloqua I think Silverpop is a great solution. Especially if you need to be able to integrate with Salesforce. After using multiple systems and reviewing demos of others I think they have a good product. But have some clear areas they need to work on for improvement. Support being one of them.

When making our selection for a new email platform over a year and a half ago, Silverpop really stood out based on functionality and the abundance of information. If you're not measuring, you're not managing, and Silverpop measures everything! Some key components I would advise my colleagues on asking before choosing a platform: 1. Does it help differentiate your message? 2. What's the support staff make up? Everything breaks sometimes, but do they have the infrastructure and people to remedy the issues before it affects your business? 3. How well does it integrate with your other key business software (e.g. CRM system, etc.)?

Silverpop was a poor fit for our company. We are a small business (database at the time was only 6,000 or so), and sell B2B. Maybe it would be better for companies with truly large databases--they may be able to get a better ROI on a fulltime staff person + the sw license. Also, at the time there was no "out" clause; they really should offer a 60 day trial OR a cancellation clause. At the time, and this may have changed, it was a one year contract, no exceptions, no flexibility.

It depends on their needs - always asking about specific functionality or campaigns you would like to run on a normal basis, but also some wilder ideas that may have been in the works. Because of list management always ensuring your platform integrates seamlessly into wherever you are storing user data (CRMs).

Realistically, if economically it makes sense for a company to use Silverpop over any other competitors, then they should use Silverpop. The positives highly outweigh the negatives. But they should really consider whether or not they need a fast delivery time (and how they define "fast" - 1 minute or 10 minutes or 30 minutes).
