Act-On is used by the Marketing Department to deliver eShots, webinars and various multi-channel campaigns. It has helped to streamline our marketing systems, and aid delivery, and also taken away the reliance on technical help from developers who are tied up with client work and thus caused delays.
  • Act-On is quick and easy to use.

  • Would be good to have a more structured training program - so this can be shared internally, and help others to learn or relearn the product quickly.
  • I'd like to more help on improving email deliverability - so providing extra detail.
  • There should be training which is demo based - an Act-on demo website - with everything set-up for a dummy business - this is such a great way to see how things work and how a system should look and feel and work. Similar to CMS providers e.g. Sitecore, Episerver etc., that have a demo site you can try out and also this assists you to learn the new features as they're released, and when a customer success manager (CSM) shows you new features you can then go back to this and try again before you do in your own system.
Training is not demo based. It would be really helpful.

We are a telemarketing company and we have seen that the decision makers have more and more knowledge in the products that they buy. We use Act-On for ourselves to create more leads, but we also work as an agent in the Scandinavian market. Here we sell and consult Act-On and marketing automation.
  • The integration of other platforms so you don't have to discard your existing systems.
  • You can create every e-mail, form and landing page in every way you like! Do it inside Act-On or with your existing system.
  • Connect all your arenas. It is really helpful to connect email with website and social media.
  • The way to create emails, landing pages and forms could be even better. It is very important that everything looks really good and the same profiling as the rest of the media on website for example.
  • The startup could be a bit easier to setup. It has already improved with a checklist which is good.
Because Act-On is very flexible it suits most companies.

We have a small marketing team in regards to people and Act-On lets us maximize our time and efforts to reach our audience as if we had 100 team members. We have been able to better segment and target our audience to provide more relevant content which has increased our engagement. Our sales team loves it as well and has seen extreme benefits in knowing what our prospects are engaging in.
  • Ease of Use - this tool can help a marketing team accomplish an astronomical amount of initiatives, whether small or large (I've worked with it for both) because it's easy to setup. Within one month I was able to setup multiple automated programs.
  • Customer Support - I feel like they are my friends. I talk to them often, not because of issues but because I ask a lot of questions and they are always there to help right away.
  • Customization - the tool may seem basic at first glance, however you can customize so many different areas to work exactly how you need it to for your business. They don't try to mold you into specific things, they work right into your marketing landscape.
  • Innovation - I've been using Act On for over 5 years now. I've seen it grow. I've seen my feature suggestions get implemented, and not long after they are asked. The tool is constantly evolving and product management truly listens to their customers on new features.
  • Google Adwords - their report is great, however there are limitations. It only shows people clicking through ads that are visiting your website for the first time and submit a form during that session. This needs to be expanded to accommodate for attribution models that may consider someone a conversion if they come back within 90 days, etc.
  • Salesforce Sync - Act-On will push things directly to Salesforce upon a form submit or through an automated program, however list syncs from Salesforce to Act-On are limited and can be done every 4 hours (unless manual push). It would be better if the lists would just automatically sync in real-time.
It is absolutely important to ask what features are included in the standard pricing during selection process. I've compared many systems and I've found that a lot of them have additional prices for features that should be standard in a marketing automation system, for example Sales insight. Another great question is time to implement. Within a month I was running complex programs in Act-On. Larger names sometimes take 6 months or longer to implement and you need a team to run them.

Our sales and marketing departments use Act-On to automate email campaigns, build forms, track consumer behavior and nurture leads.
  • I'm impressed with the ease of Act-On's list management. It's extremely simple to import, segment and send messages to the exact audience you want to target.
  • Act-On's customer support has been phenomenal. Every time I call or email with a question, they're quick to respond with a solution. With one issue in particular, I was passed around to a few different Act-On employees, simply because my question was too technical for my account manager. However, as soon as I landed in the right place (with one of the software engineers), my concern was resolved within the hour. It was terrific.
  • Creating the right reports is a breeze in Act-On. I never half to worry about pulling the most up-to-date data on all of our marketing campaigns and prospective lead behavior. It also makes it easy for our sales reps to stay current on who's frequenting our website and what their interests may be.
  • The design capabilities for landing pages, forms and emails are lacking. It would be nice to have more creative options for those who aren't experienced with building visually appealing webpages and emails with code.
  • Generally, our integration with Microsoft Dynamics CRM is good, but occasionally the numbers don't match up between the two systems. I'm sure some of it is user error as new data is entered, but some of it isn't. And our marketing efforts are only as good as our data.
  • When mapping data fields in the process of importing an email list, it'd be helpful for the selection of Act-On data fields to be alphabetized. It would make the selection process much faster.
Act-On is a great tool for our needs so far. We've had it less than a year and we're already seeing the benefits of better lead tracking and nurturing. We've saved time and money by automating a number of tasks we haven't been able to manage effectively in the past. I look forward to learning more about how to optimize this software because I know it's capable of helping us become even more efficient.

We use Act-On to track our strongest leads. The tracking features allow us to see who is visiting our website and when it would be best to reach out to leads based on their activity. We use it for follow up from conferences to reach out to contacts we made. We use the landing pages to easily supplement our website, allowing us to easily create content without having to go through our IT team and create new pages more easily than dealing with HTML and CSS. We also use the SEO features to make sure our website and landing pages are set up ideally.
  • Their knowledge base and onboarding are fantastic. I learned what I needed in a very short period of time and can quickly find information if I need help getting what I need.
  • They respond very quickly when support is needed and have always helped me find what I need if I can't in the knowledge base.
  • The email creation tool is very easy to use, and I love that it has a responsive design.
  • Adding and uploading contacts is easy.
  • Building forms is simple and easy, and is a great way to supplement our website.
  • It's very frustrating that the marketing lists are not sortable by column.
  • I know it's coming soon, but having responsive design for the landing pages would be a great improvement.
  • It would be great to see what lists a contact is in, possibly tying it together by email address.
It is definitely helpful if you need tools like lead scoring, website tracking, and an easy way to create content.

The marketing department is utilizing Act-On as a tool for new member onboarding. We are able to load new members into a 16 week automated drip campaign we built within Act-On. The support and the reporting is very intuitive and robust.

Act-On is currently being used for marketing automation such as social listening, landing page creation and integration with Salesforce. Act-On is being used in the Marketing Department and is allowing us to track and engage leads more efficiently, thereby increasing our lead conversion.
  • The interface for Act-On is really easy and simple to learn. I like simplicity because the department is small and we don't have a lot of time to take extensive training to learn a platform.
  • Act-On does a great job of social listening with Twitter. It is an excellent way to engage users who need what we have to offer.
  • The integration with Act-On and Salesforce is good. The integration allows us to communicate better between the Sales and Marketing Teams.
  • I would love for them to provide templates for their landing pages. It would make it a lot easier to build if they did.
  • An upgraded social publishing platform would make Act-On the ultimate platform in my opinion.
I think Act-On is great for increasing your ranking on Google. Since we started using Act-On, the company has ranked higher with specific keywords. If you are a small company with a small email list or social following, I don't know that Act-On is suited for your company. It seems to be more appropriate for a larger email list. I would say at least 5,000.

We have integrated Act-On into SugarCRM and are doing a better job of organizing, scoring and managing our leads. We are also utilizing the email programs to help with our customer communications.
  • Act-On has a full suite of services and tools to effectively and efficiently manage your marketing activities. It is a great resource for small and mid sized companies that do not need and/or can not afford big expensive enterprise systems.
  • The email template library is thin. They should have more templates for the most frequent communications already loaded in the library. No need to recreate the wheel - show me what is proven to work and let me customize as needed to support my business and communication objectives.
  • While they have a lot of great capabilities, overall they do a poor job of providing recommendations and benchmark solutions. Everything can be customized to your needs but sometimes you just want solid solutions and proven programs for reference.
I believe Act-On is well suited for small to mid size companies that need a solid integrated marketing automation solution that is relatively easy to manage, has solid functionality and is affordable.

We use Act-On for all of our email marketing, tying in our webinars, and for working with Salesforce to help manage leads. It's being used across the entire company, and it helps us keep track of our leads and our customers. It helps us to track all of our leads automatically and integrates lead scoring so we know where we stand.
  • Allows us to segment lists from Salesforce for particular email campaigns
  • It integrates really well with GoToWebinar so we can use our GoToWebinar registrations and easily email this segment when needed
  • Their support team is incredible
  • I would like to see a little more ability to custom code CSS under the hood. However, this is not a deal-breaker
  • I would like to see more modern email marketing templates
  • I would like to see agency account cloning (note: hardly any MA companies can do this, and for those that offer it the price is very steep) -- so this is a "wish list" item

*** 9/2015 update --> I dropped my review from a 9 to a 7 because I had a very frustrating time canceling. So make SURE you read your contract VERY VERY carefully regarding terms of billing and how much advanced notice you have to give for cancellation. It's a shame because I had very good experience with the company otherwise. ***

It's well suited for a business that has grown out of a "regular" email program such as MailChimp or Constant Contact. Those programs are great for what they do, but once you start to grow past simple drip campaigns and really want insight into what's going to on, then you need to take the next step. ALL marketing automation is expensive -- it just is. But Act-On really makes me feel like I'm running an enterprise -- but for a non-enterprise price.

Note: for those of you just starting -- you might not want to use Salesforce. It's expensive especially if you are small company. But just do yourself a favor and use Act-On with Salesforce. It will take time to understand why and how these two programs work together, but I think Salesforce is a fantastic complement to Act-On and just makes things easier.

  • Everything in the system is extremely user friendly, and I love that everything you need for email creation etc. is all in one place. I can create emails in a fraction of the time it took me before, can easily convert these emails to landing pages to post on the website, and insert links to downloads that I no longer have to gate - but can still get detailed click information on.
  • There are a few features that we really loved in Hubspot that are missing from Act-on. One of them is time spent on a page - Hubspot could tell you how long a web visitor stayed in a page or the site, giving an indication of level of interest. I also think that the "anonymous leads" in Hubspot were easier to look thru, search etc.
The biggest benefit with Act-on are the upgrades and roll-outs of new features. They are open to listening to ideas and are always finding ways to improve the system and make it more powerful.

We utilize Act-On for Email Marketing and Automation with Salesforce, in support of our sales team and entire organization. We get great mileage out of the forms and landing pages, both for their intended purposes as well as additional applications. The backend use of the product is used by the marketing department primarily, but our sales team also has visibility. We use Act-On as one of our primary means to keep in touch with our customers, clients, partners and prospects. It is our most powerful non-human sales tool.
  • Act-On's support team is the best I've seen. Our account contact, Jacob Monserrat, is knowledgeable, intelligent, and very responsive. We find this to be a distinguishing factor when compared to similar products.
  • Act-On's user interface is very user friendly and easy to navigate.
  • Act-On's integration with Salesforce is actually quite simple to use. I was pleasantly surprised with how straight froward and easy to navigate it is.
  • We would like more helpful tools and stats on deliverability, spam filter assistance, etc.
  • The WYSIWYG editor can be buggy, but I am told there is a new version on its way.

  • If I wanted to find a name in the database, the search function did not work at times. It was pretty much hard to look for a person or persons universally in your Act-On list(s)
I have used Marketo and Pardot. Act-On is an easy-to-use interface where you do not have to be a HTML guru or coder. There is a lot of logic involved in setting up a marketing campaign for example, and all that has been built in to the easy of use. All the tabs in the interface are easy to read and understand versus other tools where you have to really search for it.

A powerful tool combined with superior support, Act-On surpasses its competitors in every aspect and is the best marketing automation tool on the market. I am always trying to implement as many/if not all of their features across the board to ensure we leverage this platform and its functionality to its full extent.

  • Salesforce Integration - Integrated into Salesforce with a built in Act-On Tab, an important feature for sales users.
  • Email Templates - With Act-On's customization and flexibility we can create emails exactly how we want them without any compromises.
  • Improved Interface, the tabs can get confusing at times. This might be because the new interface is still in a beta.
What CRM are you using? Depending on what CRM is being used, Act-On may or may not have built in integration and that is a key highlight/feature. How do your sales users send and track their emails? If they are not sending mass emails and only reach out to a limited number of prospects, tracking and mass email tools might not be as important.

Act-On is being used organization-wide to track and manage leads. This platform gives us information above and beyond Google Analytics. We primarily use Act-On to produce email campaigns and test our messaging with different list segments. Our sales team is able to access our database from anywhere thanks to Act-On.

Affordable marketing automation platform with superb list management, email campaign capabilities and intelligent lead tracking. Salesforce and webinar integration. Create landing pages without a tech team. Also features simplified lead scoring. Act-On saves budget by automating tasks you would otherwise do manually, such as sending follow up emails to leads after form submissions, manage marketing lists with completely customized fields,and generate email campaign and web traffic reports.

We use Act-On for sales and marketing. We run about 15 - 18 different contextually relevant email drip campaigns, we invite people to dinners at Regional shows we attend, and we leverage the tracking / scoring that Act-On provides. And we especially like that we can build a template in Act-On that can also be leveraged by the sales team.
  • Ease of use
  • Value for the money
  • Customer Success Team is the best in the industry
  • A few more integrations such as with ON24 would be nice to have (not need to have)
  • A bit more w/social media would be nice, although what they do have is pretty amazing
  • And the ability to tie Act-On emails to ROI would be nice.
For a $2B+ company, that is using ALL the bells and whistles from Eloqua, that is Eloqua's niche. For the rest of the 98% of companies, Act-On is perfectly fine!

Currently only the marketing team is accessing the information provided by Act-On. We send reports to other teams such as sales depending on what information we think would be valuable to them. It is very helpful to see the specific names and organizations of our users and helps the sales team see what our prospects and clients are really interested in. This is also helpful for marketing so we can validate our work and see what's successful and not so successful.
  • We really like the responsive email designs so our clients can easily see our communication on their mobile devices
  • We like seeing all the activity one specific user has done in the history of their interaction with our website
  • On the interface, when you see boxes of information displayed, its hard to see everything when there is a vertical AND horizontal scroll within the page. If everything could be displayed on the page itself without any scroll (except for the regular scroll on the existing page) that would be ideal for when I have to make screenshots of information to send in emails.
  • The interface menus are confusing. The homepage with the vertical menu plus the horizonal menus on the upper navigation is a little repetitive and sometimes counter productive. Sometimes I can't remember where i found specific information and it takes me a while to get back to it because there are so many menu options. I think things should be grouped differently and a bit simpler.
  • SEO features, you should be able to audit for more than one keyword at a time so you dont have to run the same reports several times for one page
It was really helpful for us to have a conference call with my whole team who will be using Act-On because each of us use it in a different way so all the possible questions were covered during the few demos we had about the product.

We use Act-On primarily to generate leads, nurture leads, nurture existing client relationships, and reduce the sales cycle.
  • The tool is very easy to use. The only thing I really needed to get used to was it being a list-based system, rather than a relational database.
  • Customer service has been outstanding, all the way from sales to support. I feel like Act-On employees are really there to help make sure my company is successfully using this tool.
  • The tool is feature-rich, without bogging down the user interface. The developers of Act-On did a great job of creating a very simple interface to handle complex functions.
  • It would be great to have a search feature for the sales users. This would be useful for companies that are not utilizing a CRM integration so that sales execs can look up historical activity for a specific contact.
This has been an outstanding solution for a small company, but I could also see it being very useful for larger companies.

We had a series of disconnected marketing efforts. It was very difficult to know what the ROI was on any of these efforts. We use Act-On to create Agency relationships.
  • Set and forget email campaigns
  • Tracking agents'/potential agents' activities when looking to do business with us
  • It allows us to predetermine a marketing calendar, once that is locked in our day to day activities have more of a strategic focus
  • Salesforce integration is not perfect (But these seems to be a limitation of salesforce)
  • Integrating non web based initiatives into the flow is clunky (conventions and traditional marketing pole making in person calls)
  • CSS support requires deep HTML knowledge
Some key questions to consider are:

  • Do you have content or graphic design elements that can be easily used, or do you have to create them?
  • Are you adverse to hiring an outside consultant to get you up and running?

ACT-ON is being used by the entire organization to manage our inbound and outbound marketing efforts. For example, we use it to analyze who is visiting our site, how our CTA's are being used and their effectiveness, SEO audits, web forms, landing pages, email campaigns, list management, social publishing, integration with our CRM (Nimble CRM) and competitor tracking.
  • Inbound Marketing: We use this extensively to determine the activity on our web site. We get a good sense of which search terms are working, Google Paid Per Click tracking, referring sites (so that we can say thanks in some cases), and alert us when someone of significance is back on our site.
  • Marketing List Management: The segmentation aspects are very nice. We are able to easily segment lists and be sure that we are targeting specific people or groups.
  • Dashboard: The main screen for all things going on. It's a good quick read on what's happening on various marketing campaigns and initiatives.
  • Ease of Use: The system is just easy to use. I was concerned about not knowing enough when we embarked on this journey but the system is designed so that most can get up and going fairly quickly due in large part to it's user interface which is very clean.
  • Templates: If you are coming from some email marketing systems (like Constant Contact, Mail Chimp, SwiftPage) you won't find a very heavy library of visually pleasing starter templates to modify and configure. It's very basic but does get the job done.
  • Partner Program: There is not a large partner channel set up right now. They are working on it and have efforts to build this out in short order but it is something to be mindful of in your evaluation. They have a super staff and onboarding experience but if you are looking for more than "how to" in terms of working in the program and need "marketing best practices" or moving beyond "where to click" guidance, the supply of trusted providers is short.
This marketing automation software platform is easy to use and well equipped to handle the needs of many business industries and environments. Are you looking for a complete marketing automation platform? If you are looking for an inbound and outbound marketing tool then this is a great option. Are you looking for something more than just an email marketing system? This has a powerful feature set for business.

Act-On is being used by the marketing department in the US. The US marketing department is using Act-On for email campaigns, monitoring website visitors and creating landing pages. Our global marketing department has plans to roll out this platform on a global scale for select subsidiaries in the next couple of years. Act-On addresses the need for IT involvement in creating landing pages and email campaigns. Our speed to release email campaigns and landing pages has increased significantly. Act-On also allows us to use behavior based marketing automation which we did not have the ability to do with our CRM marketing platform we were using prior to CRM. Act-On compliments our CRM (SUGARCRM) and allows us to keep track of behavioral scores so that our sales team can view the information as well.
  • User friendly interface is one of the strongest selling point for Act-On. It did not take much time to learn the system.
  • Customer service and support is one of the best I have experienced. From the point of educating during my buying process, through implementation and now even 2 years later they are still supporting me with using other functions of their software that I may not be using to its full potential.
  • Act-On is also priced competitively. That is another strength to Act-On.
  • Act-On could improve by having an editorial calendar where you could plan all of the marketing activities. Currently I am using Google Calendar for all of my marketing scheduling. It would be nice to integrate this into Act-On where I could schedule and color code email campaigns, social media, direct mail, tradeshows, events, etc.
I think one of the key things with Act-On is that it can grow as your company grows. We first started off with the lowest number of contacts and realized real quickly the benefits of the system and immediately raised our number of contacts. There are several other systems out there that are very robust and offer more functions than Act-On. However, when comparing the systems, Act-On had what I needed to get started and until I need the other functions I am happy with Act-On. With that being said, Act-On is continuously adding new features and functions. They continually improve and that is one thing I love about working with them.
