  • Engagement programs provide an easy way to create multi-step, multi-touch email marketing campaigns with personalization and branching, using pre-approved templates.
  • Very flexible lead scoring, with the ability to set up separate scoring profiles for each of your customer personas.
  • Webhooks simplify the process of using APIs to pass data to third party applications.
  • Very strong user community online with many expert users willing to share their knowledge and help troubleshoot or address issues.
  • Recent enhancements include improved user interface for email creation, email analytics, and landing page template libraries
Cons
  • Response time for complex "Smart Lists" (or campaigns that use such lists) can be slow at times of peak load.
  • Documentation and formal announcements for new features trail availability. Sometimes you see new capabilities in the software before any formal announcement.
In general, when considering a marketing automation platform, consider the following:
--You'll also have to invest in data quality--marketing automation will expose bad data quickly.
--While you don't have to be a web developer, it helps to have a basic understanding of HTML and CSS.
--You'll need to have a basic understanding of logic--think about those Venn Diagrams you learned in grade school. List selection is a lot of AND, OR, NOT, etc.
--Take full advantage of peer groups, user communities, online groups etc.
--Talent is tight in the marketing automation space--you're not going to be able to hire someone cheap with 2-3 years experience.

And MOST IMPORTANT: If you don't have a strong marketing strategy, Marketo (or any other MA platform) won't help.

In terms of vendor questions, If I was looking at a marketing automation platform, these are the types of things I'd ask:
1. Can you set up multiple lead scores (one for each customer persona) or are you limited to a single score per lead?
2. Can I create custom fields in the database external to my CRM?
3. Do you have an API (beyond built-in integration with Salesforce and other CRMs) to pass data in and out the marketing automation platform to partners such as webinar providers, social media profiles, etc. Do you have service provider partners (e.g. WebEx) with whom you have canned integration?
4. Is there a user community? How active is it?
5. How long does a typical user take to become minimally proficient? Fully proficient?
6. What type of training is available? Online and In person? Self-directed or instructor led?
7. What type of analytics are available?
8. Am I on a shared IP address? How to you manage it to keep deliverablity rates high? Will I be penalized for the sins of other customers on the same shared IP?
9. Once we're up and running, how long should it take me to create and distribute an email? Build a landing page? Set up a white-paper registration/download or webinar registration?
10. Do you certify trained professionals on your platform?

Easy platform to use for modern email marketing, lead scoring and nurturing. Reporting is just OK.

Marketo is leveraged across the NICE inContact enterprise. Managed by Marketing Operations, and used by the Digital Demand Gen team and Demand Gen Campaigns team. We use Marketo forms, landing pages, thank you pages, and automated emails. We also leverage the nurture functionality, lead scoring and data enrichment from another company that is integrated with Marketo, and it synchs campaigns and responses from leads and contacts into Salesforce.com. The Sales Development organization uses Marketo Sales insights to help identify and prioritize leads.
  • Lead scoring - easy to setup report and manage.
  • Lead nurturing - the Nurture library is a great feature to manage content for newsletters, webinar invites, nurture programs and more.
  • Marketo Sales Insights helps the SDR team quickly prioritize leads with excellent campaign information to make follow-up more targeted.
Cons
  • For years, the Marketo Analytics is just not very sophisticated and it's not as robust as I would like.
  • Maybe it's our POD but the application is extremely slow and takes far too long when building landing pages nurtures reporting and emails.
  • We sometimes experience have integration issues between Marketo and other platforms.
It is well suited for medium and large enterprises looking to further automate their campaigns. I've used it at small startups, Fortune 500 company and now at a large marketing organization at NICE inContact. They have an excellent user community and the regional Marketo User Groups are an excellent source for gaining knowledge, connecting with power users and finding out how to solve problems. With the advent or Sales Cadence software like Outreach.io and SalesLoft, there are blurred lines between Marketo and those platforms which can lead to email fatigue for your prospect and customer database. I recommend keeping an eye on the amount of communication between the platforms if possible and use the Marketo calendar to stay on top of your programs.

Head and shoulders above other platforms

I work at a digital marketing agency and support a number of different Marketo clients. Marketo offers a sophisticated and scalable solution to manage lead lifecycles, track and report on revenue, and send targeted, personalized messaging. What business problems does it address? Qualifying leads and lead lifecycle management, sending personalized communications, building scalable marketing solutions, measuring marketing ROI
  • Marketo has robust lead scoring and lifecycle management solutions. Lead scoring can be tokenized to create efficient and scalable.models.
  • Triggered MQL and Sales Alert Emails enable Sales to follow up with highly qualified leads.
  • Engagement programs that allow you to easily nurture leads through the customer journey.
  • Segment your audience and send dynamic content that is personalized to each segmentation
  • Smart list logic and campaigns allow for many different types of triggered campaigns
Cons
  • Some minor UX improvements: Be able to view a subject line without opening the email.
  • Improve Text version editor - Even MailChimp's is superior.
  • Create stronger de-duplication technology native to the platform.
Marketo is appropriate for businesses with large databases and quality data. Very useful in improving Sales-Marketing alignment. A business that has strong content and a team to build engaging nurture streams and scoring methodologies. A very effective MarTech tool for those with the budget. Inappropriate for small businesses with low budgets and revenue tied to marketing. Requires expertise, so appropriate for businesses willing to invest in agency consulting or a seasoned expert.
