We use Ahrefs for link building and finding new content marketing opportunities. It is being used by the whole marketing department in various ways; some use it for finding new and valuable link prospects, while the content marketing team uses its keyword research tools for optimizing textual content.

  • Link auditing
  • Offsite marketing
  • Content marketing
  • Website auditing
  • Onsite SEO
  • PPC optimization
Ahrefs is suitable for SMBs, but also marketing agencies. Their dashboard makes it very easy to track and see offsite positive or negative trends of the websites. Links are still the number one ranking factor, so it's good to have the number one SEO tools when it comes to the index vastness.

It is costly, but it takes SEO to another level, so it's good to have it at your disposal.

Ahrefs is being used by a single department within the organization. It addresses the problems of 1. Keeping track of the good and bad backlinks that our sites (or client sites) have, and 2. Allowing us to prospect sites we want to connect with and filter by our organization's quality standards and thresholds.
  • Discovering organic keywords to your site
  • Discovering the best pages on your site based on certain metrics
  • Seeing all your backlinks
  • It's really costly - this is a con if you're a small agency. Not a feature, but really worth pointing out. Other than that, it's an extremely solid tool that's worth the money. I can't see any other cons.
If you're working on SEO for yourself or your clients, you need Ahrefs. That being said, every company that has a web presence should put some focus in their SEO. So even if you don't use it personally, have someone in your SEO department evaluate it for your business. Large or small, all sizes of business could benefit from Ahrefs.

Ahrefs is used to monitor site rankings, backlink wins and losses, technical performance and load-time information, as well as competitive research on how other companies perform relative to us in search. It is used within the corporate marketing department and in some business units. We are tracking both our properties and the rankings of competitors.
  • Backlink reports detail gains and losses, which is particularly useful if you're trying to remove bad backlinks.
  • It reviews on-page elements and helps identify how a page could be improved (such as load time.)
  • The tracking capabilities let us see historical data about how website rankings have improved or declined.
  • Ahref's keyword analyzer is not as strong as its competitors. Depending on the plan you have, it may limit to number of queries attributed to the property you're researching.
Ahrefs is appropriate to track the technical elements of a site and can compete with Webmaster Tools. If you're looking for an abundance of keyword information on competitors, Ahrefs is not the front runner. Instead, I would check out SpyFu.

Ahrefs provides the best backlink data in the industry and continually updates their platform to better serve users. As a user, I find that I can complete 90% of my SEO research in Ahrefs, which is very important in terms of workflow speed and project management. Aside from backlink data, Ahrefs also provides several other tools in their suite that is comparable to other industry leaders.
  • Backlink data: Ahrefs continues to provide the best backlink data in the industry when compared to other tools. Other players are playing catching up, but as a first mover, Ahrefs is ahead of the game by far.
  • Keyword data: Ahrefs provides extremely valuable keyword data. Though I rank them second in this category, the data that they provide is comparable to the first ranked player.
  • Content Explorer: I don't think other industry tools (SEO specific) has a content explorer as useful as Ahrefs. Their content explorer works great for identifying top content and trends for multiple industries.
  • Rank Tracker: This rank tracker is better than the average tracker and Ahrefs provides a large limit for tracked keywords. Though they have moved away from daily updates, the rank tracker is great for bench marking progress.
  • Can't export graphs: some graphs within the tool would be useful as an export. Unfortunately, exporting them is not an option.
  • No "blanket" reporting options: though Ahrefs is excellent for gathering and exporting intel/data, there are no blanket SEO reports provided. Exporting data is great, but simple report exporting would make it better.
Ahrefs has great prices for the data they provide. As a freelancer, I know there are cheaper options, but they do not provide the backlink data that Ahrefs provides. As an in-house SEO, I believe that Ahrefs is a must for research. If I had one SEO tool, it would be Ahrefs because it has most SEO tools all in its suite.

Ahrefs is being used by my organization to obtain backlinks from new sites, as well as track the backlinks our competitors obtain and try to get those links as well. We also use Ahrefs to track our specific rankings for keywords and to identify the keywords we might need to give a small amount of love to before we can start ranking on page one of Google.

It solves a solid amount of problems, it helps you understand where the value is coming from in regards to your traffic and also allows you to check the specific search volumes of keywords. It is a master tool.
  • Keyword Tracking - This is awesome because if you have specific keywords you want to rank for, Ahrefs has an awesome tracking tool that allows you to track just those keywords.
  • Site Audit - This is a new feature and it works wonders, this will help you to see if there are any on-page seo issues with your site like load speeds or redirects that go into a never ending loop.
  • Keyword Research - This feature allows you to check Keyword Difficulty, Cost Per Click and Volume of keywords. This is a great tool for researching what to write about.
  • Backlink Checker - Ahrefs updates almost daily with new backlink data so you are able to get a clear picture of who is linking back to you.
  • Depending on your plan, how often your Keyword Rankings Update and the amount of times you can search domains are limited, if they could increase this number it would be great.
If you are new to SEO it is probably not the best tool for you to start out with, because you might get overwhelmed. Ahrefs is best for someone who has a plan and understands the importance of the product for building links and for building SEO. If you need to write new content, Ahrefs should be a part of it. If you need to update old content, Ahrefs should be a part of it.

This is being used in our marketing agency as our primary reporting tool for all things SEO and some paid advertising efforts. The ability to easily see website rankings, how many backlinks, and any website errors or issues at a bird's-eye view is excellent. And we're able to drill into even more detail than we need.
  • Site auditing tool. This finds (thousands) of issues for us and makes it easy for us to understand how to fix them to improve search engine rankings.
  • Organic Rankings. Being able to see number of websites and pages linking to ours and view exactly who is linking and what links got broken or lost is a great way to keep the link building growth healthy.
  • The keyword research tool is AMAZING! This is a huge influencing tool when talking to future potential clients. We're able to show them generally where they are against their competitors and how we can outrank them.
  • Honestly, I'm having a hard time finding cons. I guess the price increase in switching plans, I find a little steep. Maybe there should be more plans in between what they have but even thought it's been a bit much, we've still found it worth it.
Whether you are a company looking to increase your own traffic and measure how your website is doing or an agency. This tool is suited for both and has plans that work for both.

If you are a marketing agency, I don't think there's any other way to go. We've used about 4 or 5 other tools before because they all did some things better than the others. When we switched to Ahrefs, we unsubscribed to ALL of the others because Ahrefs was the only tool powerful enough in each area. Site auditing, organic overviews, keyword research, keyword ranking reports, competitor analysis.. the list goes on!

We use Ahrefs to identify backlink opportunities, compare competitor metrics and we also use it to get an understand of the links gained/lost over a certain period of time. It allows us to quickly identify issues and action items when going over quick metrics on sales calls. Typically only the outreach/social media department uses Ahrefs, however should a penalty be suspected our technical SEOs will run a few reports.
  • Their backlink database is still one of the most up to date we've seen when compared to similar tools.
  • The user interface is very intuitive and easy to learn.
  • They provide you with a lot of great information and the ability to set a date range can really help you narrow things down.
  • Anchor text alert notifications for a specific domain would be nice to have.
  • Would also be nice to set a specific client domain and then be able to pick 5 competitor sites to compare it to instead of entering in the client site and then 4 competitors to compare.
  • Adding emails to forward the exports to from running a report would be good too.
This is a very comprehensive tool in terms of ability and information it provides. While it won't give you every link a site has, it will give you most of them and will provide you with the most up to date link information for any site compared to all of the other link crawl providers.

We're using Ahrefs in the marketing department primarily. It's our go-to tool for content and keyword research, as well as monitoring overall site health. The site explorer tool is my favorite one-stop dashboard for our web presence of any of the usual suspects in SEO tools - SEMRush, Moz, etc.
  • Ahrefs has a fantastic link index - one of the largest of any of the tools I've used. It's also updated regularly, and picks up new links much faster than competitors.
  • The reports available in Site Explorer are built with SEO practitioners in mind - they're the exact reports I need to check the health of our campaigns and optimizations. It's an elegant dashboard.
  • The fee only covers a single user license. Other tools (that cost less, at that) will allow multiple users. Right now the delta isn't high enough for me to switch, but if I had to consider a larger team we may give up the tool.
Well suited to any facet of SEO - it's my daily tool and the one I use the most of the suite of tools we have available at my company. That said, this is a serious tool that comes with a serious cost, compared to the other solutions out there. You'll need a bigger tool budget in order to afford it.

We use Ahrefs on the marketing team to gain insights not only into our own site, but our competitors and other sites as well. They provide great insight into site traffic and backlinks. They also have an excellent tool for keyword research that we have utilized as well.
  • In-depth look into site traffic and analytics
  • Keyword research
  • Site audits

I think this tool is appropriate for any scenario. Its a great business tool for anyone to learn more about how their site is performing (as well as compare to competitors) to see where improvements can be made.

We use ahrefs in the marketing department to track the backlinks of our website and changes in the backlink profile. We also use it to lookup the backlinks of our competitors to get ideas for getting backlinks.
  • Dashboard is very easy to read at a glance and allows us to manipulate data in many different ways to get more insights.
  • Index is fresh (compared to most competitors) and it's easy to see the most recent changes in the number of backlinks, referring domains and see the correlation in the changes of rankings and changes in the backlink profile.
  • Great tool for tracking most popular URLs and understanding reasons of why those pages rank well or bad.
  • The only piece of information that is missing in Ahrefs in my opinion is topics of websites that link to you (i.e. automotive, food, DIY etc.), so it's easier to see which backlinks are most relevant for your website. Majestic SEO provides this information, but the way they present the data and the interface of the tool is very stiff and inconvenient compared to Ahrefs.

1. Backlink tracking of your website(s)

2. Tracking popularity and rankings of pages (URLs) of your projects and how those rankings are correlated to backlink profiles.

3. Exploring websites and marketing strategies of your competitors.

We used Ahrefs across a number of marketing functions in order to understand what keywords our competitors are using, what type of traction our affiliate partners are having in the industry, and to better understand what our potential customers are searching for. Its keyword crawlers are some of the best in the industry.
  • Keywords
  • Showing the value of website traffic
  • Understanding our industry and the search terms of potential customers
  • UI is sometimes a little imposing and difficult to navigate
  • Many products and very little onboarding on how to use them
If you need to research how a competitor or partners' website is ranking or the keywords they use, I can't recommend this tool enough. It's great for validating claims made by affiliate partners during the negotiation for referral fees.

Ahrefs has the biggest database of backlinks that I know. Minimalistic interface and lot of cool features make it really useful tool. We used it to track content of our blog Funders and Founders, for our new product Adioma. We even made the infographic based on Ahrefs dataset, using number of back-links and referring domains, as counted by Ahrefs. For each top English-language media website in the world, we found the most shared articles using Ahrefs Content Explorer. I used to use Yahoo Site Explorer and Google Webmaster Tools for tracking links, but Ahrefs makes it much easier and useful. Highly recommend to everyone who is growing their website audience.
  • Sorting by Domain Ratings, Number Of Links, FB Shares
  • Tracking Backlinks
  • I'd love to see more filters, to exclude sites like Google+ and Skoop.it
Great for tracking your web popularity over time and discovering who mentioned you.

It's a brilliant tool for getting the most compressive data for all your SEO needs. With ahrefs you can build and manage an SEO campaign smartly and stay ahead of the competition.
  • Backlink reports
  • Keyword competitive analysis
  • Content Explorer & Ideas
  • Paid traffic information is still not good enough, ahrefs needs to improve their database of paid ads and keywords.
It's the number one app for SEO information, but it's missing paid search information such as keywords and ads. It's currently the best SEO tool for finding the best keywords and spying on competitors.

Ahrefs site explorer was absolutely brilliant for analysing my company's website. They had me working on the research and marketing department, and I could report the progress of the website quite clearly. While watching the website's analytics, I was able to deduce just how many websites were linking back again to me, how many domains were referring the website, and exactly how much of the total traffic had been organic. That allowed much ease as the results were fairly accurate and leading effective marketing campaigns was then possible.
  • Showing the backlinks
  • Showing the daily, monthly, yearly traffic
  • Showing about the competition
  • Discussing the competition to our business
  • It could become cheaper
  • Customer support could become more active
Whenever you're looking for analytics, I suppose none beats Ahrefs, that is only when you're looking for a well-established business as it's relatively expensive.

At my company, Ahrefs Site Explorer is used as a tool to access the backlink profile and top content for websites. It is mainly used by the SEO department, and it allows us to see what kind of backlinks and link domains we have to a website, what is the anchor text distribution like, and what broken links we have.
  • I love how Ahrefs Site Explorer includes a list of the broken links to a site, the backlinks pointed to these broken links, and the date these broken links are found. It makes identifying quality 404 error pages so much easier, especially when we have the option to download a file with all this information.
  • I love how we can gauge what the top content and top pages are for any website using Ahrefs Site Explorer. Assessing the top content and pages on a website provides insight into what we can do to amp our content strategy.
  • I also like the anchors cloud function on Ahrefs Site Explorer, because it's a clear overview of what anchor texts are most prominent for a given website, and allows us to make adjustments if there's a lack of anchor text variety.
  • Ahrefs Site Explorer provides an overview of domain health and the issues that can be fixed, and sometimes the suggested "critical issues" can be an astronomical number and not accurate.
  • For certain features on Ahrefs Site Explorer, there can a more elaborate description/guide on how to utilize the feature.
Ahrefs Site Explorer is extremely suitable for any kind of backlink or content analysis in which one wants to get a comprehensive overview of what a website's backlink profile looks like or what a website's top content is. I wouldn't necessarily recommend Ahrefs Site Explorer for keyword tracking because I think there are more efficient tools for that.

Ahrefs Site Explorer tool was used by our in-house Internet Marketing Team to investigate about the back links of our website as well as some of our competitors. We found it very useful in the sense that it provide complete list of back links with all other important related details i.e. Anchor Text, URL Rating, Domain Rating, IP From, Referring Page URL, Referring Page Title, Internal Links Count, External Links Count, Link URL,Text Pre, Link Anchor, Text Post, NoFollow, Site-wide etc.
  • Complete Insights about the back links.
  • Identify about the broken links.
  • It tell you the status off those links which are discovered long time ago
  • You can generate multiple reports for multiple websites
  • The reports generate duplicate URLs from same domain. If there are multiple back links, there should be option to filter those URLs.
  • Keywords ranking tool should provide more option to choose from various search engines.
  • There should be graphical presentation of links as well to make it more appealing to users.

We use Ahrefs Site Explorer for backlink analysis, broken link finding, and historical data. We use it for research on current clients' websites, competitors, on-boarding clients' websites and even just for fun.
  • Quickly updated backlink data
  • Extreme detail of backlinks, anchor text and strength of backlinks
  • Well designed interface
  • Their global ranks fluctuate wildly when listed below 1 million
  • Price
  • Slow updating to fixes of broken links
Ahrefs Site Explorer is especially well suited for thorough analysis of backlinks, however its keyword ranking software is a bit limited. However, at the time of writing, that is a brand new feature.

We originally used it to explore back linking opportunities. Over time we started using it more and more. Specifically we use different metrics to measure our success building links internally.
  • In our experience it has the best link data available on the market.
  • Always coming out with new HELPFUL features that eliminates the need to pay for other tools.
  • Nice home dashboard where you can browser multiple campaigns quickly.
  • With the data they provide they could provide better learning opportunities on how to ACQUIRE links. The blog they have is good but with the insight they provide they could be world class.
  • Outside of their core tools everything else is just ok. The new positions explorer seems like a SEM clone but is pretty bad. If you compare the data it provides to Search Console you'll see it's unreliable at best.
  • Not the best trust metrics.
All backlink research goes through Ahrefs.

The SEO department is using Ahrefs mostly to identify positive movement within our link building campaigns. We also use it to diagnose Google penalties. It has been extremely valuable when helping clients recover from these penalties. It provides the key metrics and attributes when need to identify real problems they may be having. The export features are nice as well.
  • The index of links updates very often
  • The export features allow easy data cross analysis with other data sources
  • The price is well worth the return of service and usefulness
  • Sometimes the index does not pick up current live links for a long time.
  • The cap for data exports is pretty low considering the vastness of a link profile.
  • There should be a feature where you can classify link types by your own parameters.
If you want to monitor your backlinks in almost real time, Ahrefs is the tool you need. They update their index faster than any other service I have seen, so if you are actively building link through content marketing other tactics, it will be nice to see what links show up naturally from your efforts. If you are looking for the best solution for cleanse a backlink profile, there are better tools out there specializing in those efforts.

Ahrefs Site Explorer is being used primarily by the SEO department to monitor and track backlinks for client and competitor websites. Ahrefs' web crawler provides a large amount of data including new/lost links, referring domains, and anchor text distribution to identify gaps or red flags for a website's inbound links. This large dataset is especially useful for off-site SEO audits, competitor analysis, and backlink cleanup.
  • Large data set of inbound links across a seemingly infinite set of websites and pages.
  • Intuitive interface and dashboard data that can be exported to a spreadsheet.
  • New/Lost link lists are typically inaccurate, making it hard to identify real trends vs. links that have just been discovered by Ahrefs.
  • Window for analysis of New/Lost links is limited, making it hard to discover historical trends within the online interface.
Ahrefs gives a good snapshot of inbound links, and has an incredibly large web index. This makes for quick identification of trends, but inaccuracy must always be considered within such a large dataset. When comparing other backlink tools, it's important to look into their process of discovering and indexing links to ensure that you get the most accurate picture for decision-making and strategy. In comparision to most other tools, Ahrefs link counts usually seem drastically inflated.

It helps with a better understanding of how we are stacking up against clients and can sometimes help come up with new ideas based on backlinks. We love that is updated by the day, it really helps us create some strong ideas.
  • Backlink analysis
  • Anchor text distribution
  • Competitive analysis
  • Dashboard could be easier to follow
  • Exports can take forever
  • Social reporting would be awesome
None, in my mind it is the best out there for what it can do!

We are currently using Ahrefs as a backlink explorer tool, as well as a method to analyze and conduct research for current and prospective clients. Currently, we're looking at back links -- internally and externally, redirect types, new and lost links, and indexing. The download speed is super fast, and the service has been very reliable.
  • Showing a good depth into the backlink profile
  • Quick load and download time
  • Easy to use and train on
  • Nice competitive comparison
  • Simple reporting
  • Offer larger batch analysis
  • Incorporate more social networks
  • Option to white-label reports
I think any situation where someone is looking to analyze or control the online marketing presence of a site, you're wanting to look at backlinks. Depending on how many clients or websites you're managing this for, you may want to consider pricing. For more websites or more links, you may want to consider AHREFS. But for one site, maybe other tools would be better suited.
