The Alfresco platform combines three services.


Content

Alfresco Content Services offers full-featured ECM for organizations that require enterprise-grade scalability, performance, and 24x7 support for business-critical content and compliance. It delivers a wide range of use cases such as content and governance services, contextual search and insight, the ability to integrate with other applications. At the core of Content Services is a repository supported by a server that persists content, metadata, associations, and full text indexes.


Process

Alfresco Process Services (powered by Activiti) is an enterprise Business Process Management (BPM) solution targeted at business people and developers. Alfresco Process Automation can be used on top of Alfresco Cloud (Alfresco Content Services on PaaS) to automate simple and complex content-centric business processes.


Governance

Alfresco Governance Services controls important information that needs to be retained over time. It's used in highly regulated environments, for managing governmental information or personnel records, or where information might be audited.

I have implemented Alfresco Content Services to solve complex enterprise problems for content service, record management, and process management. Using Alfresco Content Services, I implemented a central repository for document management and document approval processes between different departments. I have also integrated Alfresco Content Services with different applications like Portal (Liferay), SAP, DocuSign, LDAP, SSO, etc.

  • Customizations are possible; therefore, it can me utilized with many possible ways of integrating it with other ecosystems.
The biggest positive about Alfresco Content Services is its open-source nature. There are many possibilities of utilizing it in existing ecosystems using integrations.
Alfresco Content Services' UI has never been its strength from the beginning. Therefore, rating it from a usability standpoint, I will not rank it high. However, Alfresco Content Services can easily be integrated with any application and leveraged as a backend CMS or DM system. With the new Angular-based UI approach, it's very much possible to create custom UI on top of it as required.
I am not big fan of Alfresco Content Services' support; it works on its own speed and sometimes it becomes challenging to achieve business needs. However, I appreciate regular delivery of security patches and updates.

Alfresco ECM is often deployed at customer sites to enrich Elixir's own enterprise solutions, develop products for specific use cases, and orchestrate content and content processes that originate with Tango+ (Elixir's CCM platform). The ECM can support a single use case and/or scale to connect across functions and departments, depending on the business requirements and their evolution over time.
  • Archival and search and retrieval functionalities.
  • Organization and metadata applications for content processes and orchestration.
  • Scaling to serve more use cases and larger content stores and archives, as well as migration to the cloud/hosted environments.
  • Alfresco Process Services and Alfresco Application Development Framework integration makes for best functionality/application of ECM.
  • Use case alignment - Marketing content and documentation of specific business requirements and user stories being available as reference material/documentation.
  • Integration with multiple silos for content.
Large, scalable use cases for content repositories and orchestration are well-suited. However, smaller use cases could be supported by Sharepoint or other common content services applications, as well.
