What is Hornetsecurity VM Backup?

Hornetsecurity's VM Backup (formerly Altaro) is a backup and replication solution for Hyper-V and VMware virtual machines. VM Backup can manage large infrastructures, with the revamped backup repository providing long-term storage and more efficient use of disk space.

Designed for IT departments, IT resellers, IT consultants and Managed Service Providers (MSPs), the solution provides enterprise-level functionality. With its WAN-Optimized Replication and Continuous Data Protection (CDP), it helps companies to achieve minimal RPO and RTO, i.e., and reduces the length of time virtual machines are down and the amount of data lost when disaster strikes. Additionally, its augmented Inline deduplication helps to reduce storage costs.

For organizations with multiple sites, VM Backup provides a cloud-based management platform that gives a central view of all installations. This gives IT resellers/consultants a centralized multi-tenant view across all their customers.

Community Insights

TrustRadius Insights are summaries of user sentiment data from TrustRadius reviews and, when necessary, 3rd-party data sources. Have feedback on this content? Let us know!

Easy Backup and Restoration: Several users have found the backup process for Hyper-V environments to be super easy and hassle-free. They appreciate how simple it is to restore emails into a PST file.

Excellent Training Portal: Many reviewers have praised the product's training portal, which they found reliable and easy to use for setting up and configuring the software. This feature has been highly appreciated by users.

Effective Notifications: A common positive sentiment among users is their appreciation for the product's notifications when backup jobs fail. This prompt action allows them to quickly address any issues that arise during the backup process.

Pricey Replication and Cloud Backups: Some users have mentioned that Altaro can get pricey if replication or cloud backups are desired. They feel that the cost associated with these features may not be worth it for their specific needs.

No Automatic Updates: According to multiple reviewers, Altaro doesn't automatically update itself. This means that users need to manually initiate updates, which can be inconvenient and time-consuming.

Limited Features in Free Edition: Several users have noted that the single file restore feature is not included in the free edition of Altaro, even for 2 VMs. This limitation can be frustrating for those who rely on this particular feature for their backup and recovery needs.

We have used Altaro, not only internally, BUT also at our customers we support. Altaro is really a good product, and their support (when required) is super friendly and excellent support. It gives us a single pane of glass view for our customers, and give us peace of mind.
  • Backup of Hyper-V environments for me is super easy to do
  • Restoration of emails into a PST file hassle free.
  • Licensing is awesome.
  • Excellent training portal
  • I think, from my side, there is not really major issues in Altaro.
Do you have VMWare? Yes I can back it up.
Do you have Hyper-V? Yes I can back it up.
That in itself should speak for itself.
Altaro has really given a great deal into their software, not only making it easy to use, BUT also a really good and reliable product where you can support your workloads hassle-free, and super lightweight.
  • Trustworthy backups
  • On the positive side, Altaro is easy to implement, manage, and maintain.
  • On the "negative" side, I can honestly not think of anything offhand.
Each of the products got its own strengths. For me, it is all about the customer, and about their requirements. Altaro is very good software, and I can get protected what I need to for our customers, and that is the most important part.

A good and solid knowledge of the software, which Altaro got an absolute excellent "academy" or learning platform.
A good and solid knowledge of backup repositories, as well as the infrastructure side of things.
  • Data protection
  • Single pane of glass view
  • Reporting
  • Keep on protecting customer's data. Data is the most important asset of any company
It simply works and it is making our lives easier. The renewal process is also really good.
Yes
We as an MSP relaced a lot of our "legacy" backup software with Altaro as it brought a lot of value for us.
  • Product Features
  • Product Usability
Features of a product, as well as its usability, is very important. A lot of software out there is over complicated, and when the restore times come, you always wonder if the stuff will actually work. I
Altaro is really good software, and it can bring a lot of true value to a customer. The review given here is my own opinion about the software, and I really like it a lot.
  • Implemented in-house
No
Change management was a big part of the implementation and was well-handled
  • None really. Once we had our MSP Portal up, the rest is super easy.
  • Even when there is no MSP Portal, it is still super easy
Altaro has really designed their product so well that you can honestly implement this within a couple of minutes,
I think I have yet to come across any backup software where you can have an online chat with a support person from the customer's host. Let alone, their support is always there and always deliver.
We are an MSP, all purchases of Altaro support are always done on the top level. When you need support, you do not want to wait hours and hours, fortunately, that is not the case with Altaro, their support can truly inspire a lot of us to deliver our own best every day the same way they deliver support to us.
Yes
Absolutely superb support. Altaro Support has never let me down.
EVERY time I needed support.
A lot of people in the technical industry deliver what I would call snack crackle pop topics, where the software gets over complicated, and they drown people in all the "fancy" features. Altaro, from my point of view" has designed the software to be super usable, easy to implement, as well as support. It is really one of the best designs.
  • Adding the hosts you need to protect
  • Adding backup repositories and schedules
  • Managing, monitoring as well as maintenance.

We have been using Altaro Backup for all our VMs spread over all departments, setting up a backup with Altaro Backup is very easy and straightforward. It helps us with off-site locations for redundancy on weekends. It helps us to reduce RPO and also RTO with the help of CDP
  • Fast setup , no need of any documentation
  • Easy restoration and backup
  • Easy support
  • It helped us in restoring rep VM which was saved with huge time invested for data backups
This software is specially designed for IT industries like IT consultants, IT resellers, and managed service providers.

  • It has increased our ROI by managing all VMs backup centrally

I used Altaro VM Backup at one of our remote divisions that utilized Windows Server Hyper-VMs. The VMs were hosted on Hyper-V servers, but there was no backup for the VMs themselves, just the files on the VMs were backed up on-site and off-site. I downloaded and installed Altaro's trial to see whether or not their software would be of any benefit.
  • Verification of successful backups
  • Full backups of VMs for disaster recovery
  • Option of having multiple backup restore points
  • I had some issues with the initial setup, and getting the clients to sync with backup software.
  • Had issues trying to save the backups to a NAS. It eventually worked, but it didn't seem very intuitive.
Altaro VM Backup is great if you have 1 or 2 VMs that aren't backed up by any other means. I initially had some issues with setting it up so it backed up to a NAS, and sometimes the host wouldn't sync to the client. There probably wouldn't be an issue if the host system is the backup location. The interface and configuration were pretty intuitive and gave you a lot of information on the status of your backups.
  • Fast restorations of VMs from a backup
  • Ability to restore from multiple save points
  • Ability to retrieve individual files from a VM
  • I only used Altaro for the 30 day trial, so I can't speak for long-term ROI
  • It's priced $369/year for 5 VMs, that's just over $70/year per VM. Great value for what you get.
I have not previously used any other VM backup solution prior to testing Altaro VM Backup.
