We use Alteryx to merge and reformat large data sets. We have workflows built out to automate tasks that are done at weekly, bi-weekly, monthly and quarterly intervals.
  • Ability to work with large data files
  • Combining data sets that are in different formats, file types, etc.
  • Automating workflows
  • Offering a version for Mac
  • More guidance when there is an error in your workflow
Alteryx has been a game changer for our organization. It allows us to work with multiple large files at once that are in various formats, with the ability to merge files, run calculations, add additional variables, etc. It's great for automating tasks such as running reports where you're taking data from multiple files that are in different formats and combining them into one file with everything in the same format. Once you have your workflow built out, it's simply a matter of swapping out the input and output files and clicking "Run." It's also great for working with files that are extremely large that otherwise might slow your computer down or cause it to crash.

  • Input data from multiple different data sources
  • Output data to multiple different data sources
  • Easy annotation and commenting
  • Need better error messaging for problem targeting
  • Would like smoother line connectivity
  • Left joins
Alteryx is very powerful, and the preferred data processing engine for refreshing.

I use Alteryx to identify areas of concern or analyze trends in data. The reporting tool is helpful to no only create reports but send emails to stakeholders to let them know urgent information. I have been able to solve escalated issues quickly with the simple drag-and-drop interface. I have also used it to provide data for standard industry audits.
  • Drag-and-drop interface allows for ease of entry
  • ability to use existing tools to create macros opens the door to more versatility
  • Python plug-in allows me to do anything a Turing complete language can!
  • Gallery search functions a pretty poor
  • There is no way to search schedules on the gallery
I can interface with SharePoint using APIs in Alteryx. It is also great for automation.

As a data consulting firm, Alteryx is at the heart of the business. It's one of the softwares that we specialise in. The product addresses a multitude of business problems. The flexibility, creativity, and low barrier to entry really help the technical staff have conversations with non-technical staff without "losing" them in the details. The workflows you can produce are visual, logical to follow, and allow you to step through the entire process. The visual workflows are an amazing feature in terms of debugging, helpfulness when sharing the workflow, and the readability of your work. The best part of Alteryx for me is the automation. Like many ETL tools: connecting to any data source, combining disparate files however you like, transforming the data, and then having the ability to output the information in a variety of data formats is one thing. But then being able to automate this is a complete step up. i.e., automatically selecting the most recent files in folder dumps (based on metadata), bringing those into the workflow, and running those new files on the original workflow you built (without having the repoint data sources). Game changer. And the list goes on in terms of its uses.
  • Low barrier to entry
  • Connecting to ANY data source
  • Fantastic Learning platform and community
  • Free, recognised certifications
  • automation
  • To expand and shrink windows inside of Designer can be quite painful if you're not steady with your mouse!
  • Cost if you wanted it for personal use
Alteryx is perfect if you find yourself repeatedly doing tasks. Alteryx can be used to automate these, and you don't need to understand a coding language like Python, the low barrier to entry really helps with this.

If you ever find that the tools in Alteryx do ALMOST what you need but you need them to be more dynamic for automation, you've got a whole toolset in Alteryx to help with this. Macros in Alteryx, and the interface tools, allow users to drill deeper into Alteryx to add the extra customisability when needed.

A good analytical tool that is easy to use, allows easy import of data sources, seamless manipulation and cleansing, and easy exports into databases. The user-friendly interface, ease of learning, and minimal coding requirements make it a must-have. Nice tool for data science, machine learning, and predictive modeling enthusiasts, who can also visualize their data to check its integrity and quality.
  • Compatible with R and Python
  • Good visualization of data to check its quality and integrity
  • Easy to import, cleanse, manipulate and export data
  • Pricing is steep
  • APIs can be improved as connectivity to some data sources can be a challenge
  • Visualization tools are good but nowhere as good as Tableau and PowerBI
Well suited for predictive analytics, machine learning, and data analytics-based assignments where we leverage their intelligence suites. Also, its analytics cloud offering allows easy processing of workflows in the cloud, along with scheduling and management options. Less appropriate as a standalone visualization tool as it is quite inferior in that respect to a Power BI or a Tableau.

I've been using Alteryx for a few years and it has enabled me to quickly produce automations that save thousands of hours of resources. Alteryx is powerful and easy to use. Its drag-and-drop interface allows anyone to pick it up. No coding is required. It has got its limitations, e.g. when trying to write nicely formatted tables to Excel files. Most teething issues/limitations have workarounds which are easy to find on the Alteryx community, though. It’s widely used across the globe by firms and the Alteryx community forums are very active. Overall, a solid product. Would highly recommend giving it a go if you haven't already.
  • Easy to use
  • Powerful data manipulation capabilities
  • Quick workflow/app deployment on Alteryx Server
  • Widely used
  • Alteryx community forums are very active
  • Expensive - there are free/cheaper alternatives such as Knime
  • End user experience is not very customisable
  • Alteryx are slow to respond to user feedback
Useful when attempting to automate a process that is done manually, as long as the process/steps can be defined logically. It’s saved me huge amounts of time when collating information from numerous files into a single report, which is very easy to set up and runs extremely quickly. It’s also helpful when several different reports need to be created in one go, e.g. an Excel file for each country - it just takes the click of a single button to generate all those files, it’s like magic. Less useful when users need to interact with the data to review/interpret it - a dashboarding tool such as BI/Tableau may be required for that, but Alteryx can still be useful for preparing the data that feeds into it.

At my company, we ingest various disparate data sources and need to be able to see our clinical trials at a portfolio level for multiple metrics at a single glance. Alteryx came in to play two years ago to begin helping us find ways to prep and blend the disparate sources and even automate those refreshes so we could build BI dashboards on top of the blended single source. We eventually expanded our use of Alteryx once we realized it was may more powerful than just a data prep and blend tool. We eventually expanded to use it for user interface apps and automated reporting outputs. Within two years, Alteryx has become an integral part of our reporting and analytics. All of our analysts from various backgrounds and experience levels are able to pick it up quickly and expand their knowledge with Alteryx's community forums.

  • Alteryx Server Functionality

Alteryx is a great tool for transforming any data source at any skill level of the user. Little to no programming experience is required in order to build and automate some amazing processes that have no business remaining manual. If you happen to work for a company that has precise ETL and never need to transform your data beyond how it already is in database tables or data marts then you may get by without needing Alteryx for data cleansing and prep but there is still so much other functionality Alteryx has to offer even if you have the cleanest databases to work with. Alteryx can't quite replace BI tools such as Tableau or Power BI in terms of having a dashboard that folks can navigate to and interact with but it is a great tool for preparing your data for BI tools or even replacing SSRS.

I use Alteryx daily for data prep, formatting, reporting for end users, outlier identification, trend analysis, and as a data feed for our Spotfire and Tableau dashboards. Our Alteryx workflows scheduled on the Server connect to Snowflake and generate recurring output without any manual intervention.
  • Data wrangling
  • Automated output to Excel, Spotfire, Tableau, or many other formats
  • Machine Learning
  • Artificial Intelligence (AI)
  • Easy output to Excel, with different formats for each Sheet
  • Macro Management
  • Easy migration to server / production
Data wrangling / Data prep: The Alteryx low-code/no-code workflow development environment immediately improved my coding efficiency by 60% or 70%. The ability to view my data at each individual transformation step is unparalleled.

Quick results: initial Alteryx workflow development has a very low learning curve. I was able to quickly get up-to-speed using the free online training resources.

Macros and server use can be challenging. But those are advanced topics.

We were able to address the material weakness of the organization which was challenged by the external auditor on our legacy applications,Alteryx provided a quick let solution with its analytics and data management capabilities in lesser time
  • Working with heterogeneous data
  • Processing speed on huge volume of data
  • Reconciliation and automation made easy
  • Save & export feature — lot of times our team just save the workflow while it has to be exported to save those changes.
  • Non-support of workflows that are created in older version
In a technical eco system where you have a blend of both legacy and digital technologies Alteryx helps you to deal with data easily and analyze it…may not be good option to use it as an ETL tool

Best for big data prep

Gottfried Mathurin | TrustRadius Reviewer

Alteryx is to my knowledge the most efficient tool for agile data preparation. I use it massively as a low-code yet elaborate-feature-rich piece of software to acquire, transform, cleanse and analyse data, generally big data, from various and heterogeneous sources as required for the corporate internal audit assignments which cover the full scope of business units and activities in the company I work with.
  • data prep
  • acquiring data from various sources in various formats
  • combining (joins), (even fuzzy) matching, parsing
  • dealing swiftly with big data
  • providing a graphical (audit) process trail
  • (basic) machine learning functionalities
  • practical visualization outputs
  • (even) more straightforward integration of Python and R code
  • SQL push down (translation of workflows into SQL code)
  • (full blown) cloud version of Designer
To any "Excel power-user kind of" profile, to any any data owner willing to reap information from huge volumes of data and facing data prep difficulties, I would definitely recommend Alteryx. Yet, Alteryx is not the best suited for machine learning, even in a low-code approach and should for such needs be regarded as a very useful preparation tool before actual machine learning processes. Alteryx deploys well bottom up, pushed by thrilled users and doers. It is not to be launched as an ERP-like project from top down, with armies of consultants and project managers.

I am working with an EPC company, which performs engineering, procurement and construction of chemical plant. My role is the administrator of 3D model of the chemical plant, with Smart 3D software of Hexagon. We are using Alteryx to retrieve data from 3D model database and perform blending and reporting work. The repeatable, easy-to-trace and eay-to-configure feature of alteryx has beem making my work so much easier. Recently we are doing some new challenges, to implement our engineering design rules into Alteryx flows to perform some design QC check and modeling work, then feedback to 3D model via API. We can already see some promising results.
  • Retrieving data from on-premise and cloud SQL Server
  • Repeatable schaduable workflow with Alteryx server
  • Greate capability for data cleansing, blending
  • Free feature to work with windows scheduler.
Alteryx is best suited for organizations to handle data distributely, meaning even a "normal" member can perform the data processing at his needs with knowing complex or difficult coding skills. In some cases, such as the data is not well structured, Alteryx might encounter challeges.

Alteryx enabled users with deep business and customer knowledge the ability to quickly access data, transform it into information, and then determine long term benefit by rapidly prototyping solutions. Speed to insight is critical to lower the cost in prototypeing before full scale technology solutions can/should be built.
  • Data Blending
  • Speed to Insight and Value
  • Low barrier to entry
  • Springboard to growing your technical skill set
  • Native cloud deployment (client and server)
  • Integration with Google Cloud Platform (but improving)
  • Enterprise Management for IT support teams - User, Job, and Server monitoring, Software deployment, Server Maintenance

I use Alteryx Designer Desktop to pull data from Oracle databases, manipulate data within Alteryx to calculate and create reports for reverse logistics tracking and development.
  • Alteryx is fast!

  • Bring back Automation for individual users
  • Combine Intelligence Suite with Designer
Alteryx is easy to use to wrangle data from multiple sources and combine into one stream. Tools allow non-sequel writers to create workflows in minutes to perform quick analysis of data. The ability to turn areas of your workflow on and off to test different scenarios within a workflow is one of the best features for me.

I use Alteryx for a wide range of solutions in Financial Services. In various areas of our organization, I have used Alteryx for reconciliation, data quality, metadata, and reporting, but the area that Alteryx really excels is in dynamic workflow automation. We can create and schedule workflows to run regularly and then move on to other projects confident that our automation will run as expected.
  • Schedule workflows to run on Alteryx Server with and/or without user interaction
  • Send emails with workflow results
  • Receive notification of processes that completed and any processes that didn't run successfully
  • Interactive dashboards for user interaction
In my organization, we regularly create workbooks and duplicate workbooks to show various versions of analyses. This creates a lot of redundant files and can oftentimes break links in workbooks and lead to manual errors being performed. Alteryx prevents all of this by allowing users to create automated workflows that perform the same - or dynamic, if needed - tasks that users might perform on a regular basis.

I use Alteryx in almost every area of our business. In consulting with clients, I use Alteryx as part of testing data migration, ETL, validating configuration settings in ERP systems, developing analytics used in internal audits and operations, and others. I also use it internally for reading and converting text or CSV files into a usable data format, reading data in and converting to reports, and reviewing Excel files provided by other users.
  • Comparing data
  • Converting data
  • Reducing repetitive tasks to a button push
  • New version has some AMP engine issues to resolve
  • Search function in tools to find fields would be nice to have
  • Formatting Excel output files should be easier
Alteryx is very flexible if you are using the right tools within it. It is well suited for dealing with data files that need to be joined together or analyzed. It is less appropriate for working with files needing OCR conversion to retrieve data until those files have been read by an OCR software.

Such a versatile tool. We leverage Alteryx daily to automate processes, take costs out, add value and improve decision-making. It's also used to prototype solutions prior to a hand-off to our engineering team. One such example, which tends to repeat regularly - is bringing together disparate sources of data. One tool to bring it all together, perform the transformations and prepare for the visualization layer. This is where Alteryx really shines.
  • Data discovery
  • Profiling
  • Transformation
  • Data preparation
  • Cloud based interface
  • Transparent data lineage
Best suited in large organizations that are looking to scale analytics. In my opinion, Alteryx shines when it's leveraged with Alteryx Server, allowing users to share workflows more easily, create analytic apps, and schedule. I'm personally responsible for enabling the company to perform self-service analytics. Alteryx is a great tool for that, and once the users understand how to use it, they love it. Furthermore, we need to track ROI because, well - it's an expensive tool, and we need to ensure we're getting value for the license costs. It's fairly easy to track the hours we're saving on a regular basis once we've automated a process.

Automating previously manual business processes and reporting. We also use it for ad hoc reporting needs as they arise within the business. Some workflows have cut hours of manual work down to just a few minutes. Very useful in a lean six sigma/ continuous improvement work environment. Very pleased.
  • Auditable workflow
  • Data democratization
  • Easy adoption/learning curve
  • Cost/pricing structure
  • Visualizations aren’t as intuitive as the rest of the tool.
  • Connectors to Google a little difficult
Automates manual excel work very well. Transforms manual requests into automated end user-initiated reporting. It brings a lot of the work that IT usually needs to deal with down to the analyst level, saving those resources for high code jobs. Light weight enough for no-code users but has the python and R capabilities.

Alteryx is used throughout the company. The area I directly support, supply chain analytics, it is used both "big" and "small": From the engine behind larger supply chain models that drive inventory strategy to protect service; to refining planning parameters intended to predict the future behavior of our supply chain and drive our plan; to ad hoc questions that can now be answered in a matter of minutes; Alteryx is the Swiss army knife that enables these endeavors.
  • Grab and combine data from disparate sources
  • Enable curiosity and the solving of complex business problems
  • Flattens the learning curve for complex analytics
  • sharing workflows
Alteryz is well suited for solving almost any type of business problem, or problem in general, that requires data. To some extent, the sky is the limit, and Alteryx continually enhances its capabilities in things like NLP, computer vision, ML models, etc. While it does have some data visualization capabilities, it is not extremely well suited in that regard, though at the moment it isn't trying to compete with the likes of PowerBI or Tableau. Alteryz works well with such software specializing in data visualization.

Alteryx is used in our Analytics team and Data Engineering team. It is being used mainly for data preparation before analytics. Also, it is used for repetitive analytics because it is really easy to run a complex query from Alteryx.
  • Data preparation.
  • Visualizing complex queries.
  • Processing multiple "joins" in an easy manner.
  • Alteryx could use data connectors to other software systems.
  • Alteryx may need to add better data visualization capacity.
Alteryx could be very useful if you need to combine data from multiple data sources. Also, it would help data preparation and cleaning before analyzing data. If the data quality is already excellent, then it would probably be less useful.

Currently, Alteryx Analytics is being used by a select group of employees in our center of excellence, the total number being around 4 or 5 active users with 10 other licenses allocated based on immediate need.

Alteryx is used by a variety of small teams within our group to prepare and revise Excel reports from their raw state to be ready for a variety of both client-facing and dashboards. Essentially, a number of reports need to be consolidated with new variables created, so that the data is clean and easy to manipulate when creating the dashboards we need in Microsoft Power BI.
  • Cleanse data
  • Automate repetitive tasks
  • Provide a simple but power GUI
  • Making syntax more clear on portions where code is necessary
  • Stop having the "Start Here" tab open every time you open the software
I regularly recommend Alteryx for solving a variety of data reporting issues. The only reason it doesn't get more mileage in our group is that data analytics is a side project for me, rather than my full-time role. If you need to regularly revise a spreadsheet in the same way, it can trim the time from hours to a single button click. The workflow I currently use each day involves Alteryx analyzing and displaying trends over years with detail that drills down to the day. It has to read and write just under 2000 files at this point to do that and accomplishes that within about 6 minutes after I click the Run button. If my computer were faster, it would take even less time. The only situations I haven't been impressed with Alteryx for have been in presenting data. If you want a pretty output, just use Power BI afterward though.

Alteryx has allowed us the self-service reporting capabilities that we longed for. With many disparate data sources, reporting was a chore and our analytics teams were bogged down with ad hoc reports. Alteryx allowed us the ability to create self-service tools through the analytic apps deployed to the gallery that could be leveraged by the business to pull their own ad hoc reports. This freed up analysts to do more complex reporting and analysis.
  • Pulling data from multiple disparate data sources.
  • Allows users to see the data at every step of the workflow to be able to cleanse, analyze, and optimize the data.
  • Provides an analytics platform that is easy for users of all levels to thrive in whether they are just starting out in their analytics journey or they have a master's degree in Data Science.
  • The Gallery search capabilities are not as easy as they should be.
  • I wish you could see the schedules for a workflow in the gallery when you click on the workflow itself, instead of having to search through the schedules as a user.
  • The filters on the Schedules section in the Gallery don't work as they should.
Alteryx is a well-rounded platform suitable for all functions from ETL, data cleansing and wrangling, analyzing, reporting, and even data science functions. Alteryx used to fall behind in cloud capabilities, but in the last year it has stepped up its game in that area as well with a Snowflake partnership. I'm not sure there are many scenarios where Alteryx should not be used!

We use Alteryx for data prep, cleaning and analytics, to funnel data into Tableau. Used solely in our analytics department.
  • Makes automating data cleaning a breeze.
  • Data prep becomes a fun activity with Alteryx.
  • Analytics becomes more of a focus, as Alteryx is doing the heavy lifting.
  • Training seems to be lacking or expensive.
  • Offline guides would be helpful instead of logging into the online training.
  • Multi-use licence would be great to jump from laptop to desktop.
Pulling data from databases and preparing for data visualization is our primary use for Alteryx, however if you have perfect data, Alteryx can get redundant, but honestly who has that.
