Use Cases and Deployment Scope
We used Alteryx for analyzing pre-sales data. We had a proposal management system which generated a lot of numbers. My job as a process analyst was to use Alteryx to get insights into making the process efficient. It helped us in identifying bottle necks and focusing on problem areas.

The solution engineers were able to better design the proposals which resulted in client satisfaction and savings for the company.

Likelihood to Recommend
It is very well suited for mid-sized data operations. One person working on a project is ideal. I have not used Alteryx in a collaborative project, so can't say for sure. It is quite powerful and compares well with the competitors. If you have data from disparate sources, it helps to have a tool like Alteryx.

It's being used by consultants on an as-needed basis, when we are analyzing datasets from clients that are too large for Excel. It's also particularly useful for cross-tabbing and combining several disparate datasets from clients. It allows for a quicker way for consultants to analyze data themselves without outsourcing it.

  • Combine disparate datasets
  • Quick onboarding - easy to learn
  • Functionality has most of you would need
  • Combines easily with Excel and other commonly used tools
Cons
  • It's hard to check your work
  • Writing formulas is not quite as intuitive as it could be
Likelihood to Recommend
If you can do something really quickly in Excel, that's probably better. However, if your dataset is large and it will slow down Excel, Alteryx is a great alternative. It's also really good for some of the functions that you may be less familiar with in Excel (for e.g. if someone doesn't know how to do conditionally summing, etc.) -- learning how to do this on Alteryx is more intuitive and faster than learning on Excel.

I use Alteryx as an ETL tool, for quick analysis, building data models for further reporting, and using it to automate different data processes for my stakeholders. By using Alteryx, I can be quick and nimble, creating prototypes before our tech teams can get the project into their sprint plans.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope
I use Alteryx to identify areas of concern or analyze trends in data. The reporting tool is helpful to no only create reports but send emails to stakeholders to let them know urgent information. I have been able to solve escalated issues quickly with the simple drag-and-drop interface. I have also used it to provide data for standard industry audits.

  • Drag-and-drop interface allows for ease of entry
  • ability to use existing tools to create macros opens the door to more versatility
  • Python plug-in allows me to do anything a Turing complete language can!
Cons
  • Gallery search functions a pretty poor
  • There is no way to search schedules on the gallery

I can interface with SharePoint using APIs in Alteryx. It is also great for automation.

Alteryx is a strong ETL tool that can be used to manipulate. In the past, I've used the tool to prepare data for custom production teams as well as a member of a custom productions team to meet customer needs. The standardization and geospatial tools are particularly useful.
Pros
  • The geospatial utilities are exceptional for mapping and plotting coordinates for data selection and market campaign planning.
  • It makes data manipulation easy. The easy-to-use interface makes ETL simple, while maintaining the power of the most recognized tools.
  • It's dozens of tools in one package. You'll no longer need to jump from tool to tool, changing layouts and spending time setting up the next process. Instead, you can set it up all at once, in one powerful tool.
Cons
  • Managing input of fixed-width files is a difficulty. The ability to type out the layout, instead of having to manually select column specifications, would be much easier.
Likelihood to Recommend
I've used it on large projects and small. It's best for handling data, as opposed to project management. It can handle input and output of delimited, Excel, and fixed-width files, as well as several database formats.
